Alex McKinnon

I had the pleasure of meeting Alex McKinnon when I was looking after the units he lived in. He was a gentleman and a nice bloke. This really is tragic. Hope he has a fast and fully recovery.

Watching on tv it didn't look bad at all until the young bloke couldn't get up. McKinnon ducking his head into the ground as the players fell down onto him obviously also contributed to what happened.

Prayers are with Alex and his family, and hoping he can make a full recovery.

If McKinnon didn't bend his neck he would've landed on his head. It's human instinct to always protect your head.

Fractured c4-c5\. One of my friends told me he could still feel his legs which is awesome news. Onviously the motor side of the injury is yet to be seen.

It could take weeks or even months just to diagnose nerve root problems let alone treatment/ recovery.

Wish him and his family all the very best. Football is a tough game physically but right now they need the mental toughness to be ok. Can't even imagine what they're going through

This is horrible.

The fact that the cord is not severed is great news, however it does not automatically mean he will full recover, i know of a few that have had similar injuries and are still unable to walk…...fingers crossed for McKinnon.

It makes me shudder when something like this happens, such a freak accident that could have happened to anyone.

Blaming the tacklers is unfair, unfortunately they will have their own demons to fight if the worse occurs. Id actually like for their sake for no suspension to be levied as it might help them forgive themselves.

A mate of mine was involved in an incident when a player tried to tackle him and got his head in the wrong spot and the result was fatal, he only played a few more games and reckons that he often thinks about it 16 years on and wishes he did something different.

IM hoping that ALex makes a full recovery and can live a normal life, such a sad, sad day

Intersting to see how this will play out…..not just for the poor lad injured **but for the kid that put him in this position**....and how the NRL and Media will jump on this.

Exactly right Simon.

I once tackled a player (completely legal) who didn't get up, and they had to abandon the game and send a helicopter to airlift him to hospital with a suspected broken neck. To say I was sh*tting bricks at the prospect of permanently incapacitating someone would be an understatement.

The same Sunday afternoon a fellow from my club died after a tackle went wrong. Can you imagine what the opposition player he tried to tackle would feel like?

There are no winners/losers when accidents of this nature happen. Just hoping there is no permanent damage, and that the fans/media/NRL don't go overboard with condemnation of what in reality was simply a terribly unfortunate accident.

What about Cam Smith. There is a player in front of him who may not walk again and all he wanted to do was put his case to the ref. The ref had to send him away 4 times. The ref should have binned him. Or Mason should have dropped him.

What a ridiculous comment. Did you actually listen to what he said? What he did said has been shown to be right. Other "captains" including could learn a lot from a player who is able to string together a coherent sentence.

As a father of a son who has aspirations of a career in sport, Cameron Smith is a player I would hope he would look to as the bench mark.

What scumbag I think not. Smith was more worried about the outcome his team would receive rather than the outcome of the kids life laying on the floor. If that was your son on that floor. Would you still believe that. Bench mark my ass!

If anyone thinks action will be taken against the tacklers i.e heavy fines or suspensions then you're living on another planet. Its Rugby League, accidents like this unfortunately happen. Even the commentators were saying McKinnon looked like he was trying to roll himself through but he stopped dead on his head. Not the Storm players fault, its not like they haf the goal of breaking the kids neck, although i'm sure some of you Storm haters would happily argue until you're blue in the face that that was their intent.

Accidental or not does not matter did he land on his head yes was there lifting between the legs yes . End of story 8-10 weeks and yes because the kid broke his neck

McKinnon contributed to the way he landed just as much as anyone else. 8-10 weeks? good luck with that.

KS..I fractured the same two vertebrae diving into a river 30 years ago…After a long recovery I'm walking and moving OK...hopefully McKinnon outcome is the same

Oh thank god there is some hope that he will walk again. Thanks.

Lol let's see what anyone else does when they are perpendicular to the ground with the weight of three other men forcing you on it.

It happens in 0.1 seconds. It's basic human instinct to protect your head over anything else.

It is 100% the storm players fault.

However, I'm sure they are battling their own demons as well. It will take months of counselling to get over this if the worst happens to McKinnon.

As someone said, everyone loses from this horrific incident.

He never should of been put into that position to start with. IMO it wouldn't of mattered whether he stuck is head under or pushed it out, he was still headed head first into the turf, with the weight of three players behind him.
The Storm players do have a case to answer regardless of whether you love them or hate them, that isn't the issue. They put McKinnon into a dangerous position that resulted in the breaking of his neck and they need to be held accountable for their actions.

The "Facts" are the tackle was "illegal" according to the NRL RULES- that;s all she wrote." Stupid is what stupid does"!!!

it will be interesting too see how the NRL acts on the tackle.
whilst it is a hard contact sport, no one likes to see this happen.

for Alex Mc Kinnon sake wish him a healthy and speedy recovery.
as long as he is able to make a full recovery, that's all I would like to see.
his welfare and long term capabilities are far more important than playing footy.

.

There was an illegal act in the tackle that directly led to the end result…I wonder if you can tell us what it was.

Do you think it was severe enough to warrant the offending players being fined, suspended and be forced to live with it for the rest of their lives? the intent wasn't to break the kids neck.

As it happens the players involved weren't even cited.
