Maid's decomposed body taints Singapore water
AFP
May 17, 2011, 4:08 pm

SINGAPORE (AFP) - People living in a Singapore block of flats unknowingly consumed water tainted by the decomposing body of an Indonesian maid before police made the gruesome discovery, a report said Tuesday.

The Straits Times newspaper said some residents complained to authorities after they discovered the tap water on Monday was slightly yellowish and unnaturally foamy.

A police spokesman told AFP that a 27-year-old Bangladeshi man had been arrested in connection with the death of the Indonesian maid, whose body was discovered in one of eight water tanks on top of the 15-storey block.

An investigation into the case, which has been classified as murder, is ongoing, a police statement said.

Police said they made the discovery after receiving a call saying there was a body in one of the water tanks.

They did not say who tipped them off but the Straits Times said it was believed to be a colleague of the Bangladeshi suspect.

"This is so disgusting. My whole family finished a big pot of green bean soup I cooked this morning," Choi Ah Moi, 69, was quoted as saying in the Straits Times.

Could exoplanet be a haven for life?
AAP
May 17, 2011, 12:27 pm

Scientists said a rocky world orbiting a nearby star was confirmed as the first planet outside our solar system to meet key requirements for sustaining life.

Modelling of planet Gliese 581d shows it has the potential to be warm and wet enough to nurture Earth-like life, they said.

It orbits a red dwarf star called Gliese 581, located around 20 light years from Earth, which makes it one of our closest neighbours.

Gliese 581d orbits on the outer fringes of the star's "Goldilocks zone," where it is not so hot that water boils away, nor so cold that water is perpetually frozen. Instead, the temperature is just right for water to exist in liquid form.

"With a dense carbon dioxide atmosphere – a likely scenario on such a large planet -- the climate of Gliese 581d is not only stable against collapse but warm enough to have oceans, clouds and rainfall," France's National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) said in a press release.

More than 500 planets orbiting other stars have been recorded since 1995, detected mostly by a tiny wobble in stellar light.

Exoplanets are named after their star and listed alphabetically, in order of discovery.

Until now, the big interest in Gliese 581's roster of planets focussed on Gliese 581g.

It leapt into the headlines last year as "Zarmina's World," after its observers announced it had roughly the same mass as Earth's and was also close to the Goldilocks zone.

But that discovery has since been discounted by many. Indeed, some experts suspect that the Gliese 581g may not even exist but was simply a hiccup in starlight.

Its big brother, Gliese 581d, has a mass at least seven times that of Earth and is about twice our planet's size, according to the new study, which appears in a British publication, The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The planet, spotted in 2007, had initially been dismissed as a candidate in the hunt for life.

It receives less than a third of the solar radiation Earth gets, and may be "tidally locked," meaning that one side of it always faces the sun, which would give it permanent dayside and nightside.

But the new model, devised by CNRS climate scientists Robin Wordsworth, Francois Forget and colleagues, showed surprising potential.

Its atmosphere would store heat well, thanks to its dense CO2, a greenhouse gas. And the red light from the star would also penetrate the atmosphere and warm the surface.

"In all cases, the temperatures allow for the presence of liquid water on the surface," say the researchers.

For budding travellers, though, Gliese 581d would "still be a pretty strange place to visit," the CNRS said.

"The denser air and thick clouds would keep the surface in a perpetual murky red twilight, and its large mass means that surface gravity would be around double that on Earth."

Getting to the planet would still require a sci-fi breakthrough in travel for earthlings.

A spaceship travelling close to light speed would take more than 20 years to get there, while our present rocket technology would take 300,000 years.

Botox Mum loses child custody: reports

STAFF REPORTER with AP,

A woman who injected her eight-year-old daughter with Botox has lost custody of her child, according to reports.

Single mum Kerry Campbell was criticised earlier this year after it was revealed that she injected Britney with Botox because she wanted her daughter to become a star.

During an interview with Good Morning America last week, Ms Campbell told correspondent Lara Spencer that she gave Britney - who is a beauty pageant contestant - the treatments to prevent wrinkles.

RELATED NEWS: Eight-year-old has Botox, wants boob job

"It's a tough world in the pageant world, I'm telling you," Ms Campbell said.

"The kids are harsh."

Ms Spencer said Child Protective Services in the United States stepped in this weekend to remove Britney from her mother's care.

It was the obligation of the state to protect the child, Ms Spencer said.

She said a reliable source told her the child was in "a safe and stable home" away from Ms Campbell.

But ABC7 said it had received an email from a woman claiming to be living with Ms Campbell and her daughter, disputing the ABC report.

"She says the girl is still in her mother's custody, writing, 'All I can say is nothing you are hearn (sic) is true'," ABC in the US has reported.

"The San Francisco Human Services Agency launched an investigation last week, but Monday department head Trent Rhorer told ABC7, 'SFHSA completed its investigation and is no longer involved in the case'."

Botox is not recommended for people under the age of 18 for cosmetic purposes.

Mr Rhorer told KGO-TV last week that officials wanted to speak to Ms Campbell and Britney.

"It's pretty unusual for a mum to be injecting an eight-year-old with Botox and certainly is grounds for an investigation," Mr Rhorer said.

Britney told Good Morning America that she experienced pain and sometimes cried a little, but has become used to the injections and looked better after the treatment.

Asked why she got it, she first said she didn't know. But after appearing to be prompted by her mother, she said she saw wrinkles and didn't think they were nice.

Dr Isaac Neuhaus, a professor of dermatology at the University of California, said administering Botox to a child could paralyse developing muscles.

He said injecting the drug in the wrong spot or in the wrong amount could cause breathing problems or affect the child's ability to swallow.

"There is a lot of concerns you'd have for an eight-year-old who's being put through Botox treatment for wrinkles she doesn't have," Dr Neuhaus said.

"It's going to certainly have a significant impact on her body image."

The San Francisco Human Services Agency, which investigates reports of child abuse, received many calls from people concerned about Britney's wellbeing after the television appearance, Mr Rhorer said.

Botox, which was introduced in 1989, is known for its ability to smooth wrinkles, but it is also approved to treat other conditions, including neck spasms, excessive underarm sweating and migraine headaches.

A purified form of the toxin botulinum, Botox blocks connections between nerves and muscle, temporarily paralysing the muscle.

Injections can be painful and are not recommended for anyone under the age of 18, the US Food and Drug Administration said.

Heaven is a fairy tale, says physicist Hawking
Reuters
May 17, 2011, 12:41 am

LONDON, May 16 (Reuters) - Heaven is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking said in an interview.

Hawking, 69, was expected to die within a few years of being diagnosed with degenerative motor neurone disease at the age of 21, but became one of the world's most famous scientists with the publication of his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time."

"I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first," he told the Guardian newspaper.

"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark."

When asked how we should live he said: "We should seek the greatest value of our action."

Hawking gave the interview ahead of the Google Zeitgeist meeting in London where he will join speakers including British finance minister George Osborne and Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz.

Addressing the question "Why are we here?" he will argue tiny quantum fluctuations in the very early universe sowed the seeds of human life.

The former Cambridge University Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a post once also held by Isaac Newton, has a history of drawing criticism for his comments on religion.

His 2010 book "The Grand Design" provoked a backlash among religious leaders, including chief rabbi Lord Sacks, for arguing there was no need for a divine force to explain the creation of the universe.

As a result of his incurable illness Hawking can only speak through a voice synthesiser and is almost completely paralysed.

He sparked serious concerns in 2009 when he was hospitalised after falling seriously ill following a lecture tour in the United States but has since returned to Cambridge University as a director of research.

Christian movement preparing for End of Days
By GARANCE BURKE, Associated Press – 1 hr 6 mins ago

OAKLAND, Calif. – Some shut themselves inside to pray for mercy as they waited for the world's end.

Others met for tearful last lunches with their children, and prepared to leave behind homes and pets as they were swept up to heaven.

And across the globe, followers of a California preacher's long-publicized message that Judgment Day would arrive Saturday turned to the Bible, the book they believe predicts the beginning of Earth's destruction on May 21.

The doomsday message has been sent far and wide via broadcasts and web sites by Harold Camping, an 89-year-old retired civil engineer who has built a multi-million-dollar nonprofit ministry based on his apocalyptic prediction.

After spending months traveling the country to put up Judgment Day billboards and hand out Bible tracts, Camping follower Michael Garcia planned to spend Friday evening with his family at home in Alameda, near the Christian media empire's Oakland headquarters.

They believe it will likely start as it becomes 6 p.m. in the world's various time zones.

"We know the end will begin in New Zealand and will follow the sun and roll on from there," said Garcia, a 39-year-old father of six. "That's why God raised up all the technology and the satellites so everyone can see it happen at the same time."

The Internet was alive with reaction in the hours past 6 p.m. Saturday in New Zealand.

"Harold Camping's 21st May Doomsday prediction fails; No earthquake in New Zealand," read one posting on Twitter.

"If this whole end-of-the-world thingy is still going on … it's already past 6.00 in New Zealand and the world hasn't ended," said another.

Camping's radio stations, TV channels, satellite broadcasts and website are controlled from a humble building on the road to the Oakland International Airport, sandwiched between an auto shop and a palm reader. Family Radio International's message has been broadcast in 61 languages.

Camping, however, will be awaiting Jesus Christ's return for the second time. He said his earlier apocalyptic prediction in 1994 didn't come true because of a mathematical error.

"I'm not embarrassed about it. It was just the fact that it was premature," he told The Associated Press last month. But this time, he said, "there is...no possibility that it will not happen."

Skeptics are planning Rapture-themed parties to celebrate what hosts expect will be the failure of the world to come to an end.

Bars and restaurants from Melbourne, Australia to the Florida Keys advertised bashes.

In Oakland, atheists planned a gathering at a local Masonic temple to include group discussions on "The Great Success of Past Apocalypses," followed by dinner and music.

Camping and his followers believe the beginning of the end will come on May 21, exactly 7,000 years since the flood in the biblical story of Noah's Ark.

Some 200 million people will be saved, Camping preaches, and those left behind will die in earthquakes, plagues, and other calamities until Earth is consumed by a fireball on October 21.

In the Philippines, a big billboard of Family Radio ministry in Manila warned of Judgment Day. Earlier this month, group members there distributed leaflets to motorists and carried placards warning of the end of the world.

Christian leaders from across the spectrum have widely dismissed the prophecy, but one local church is concerned that Camping's followers could slip into a deep depression come Sunday.

Pastor Jacob Denys of Milpitas-based Calvary Bible Church plans to wait outside the nonprofit's headquarters on Saturday afternoon, hoping to counsel believers who may be disillusioned if the Rapture does not occur.

"The cold, hard reality is going to hit them that they did this, and it was false and they basically emptied out everything to follow a false teacher," he said. "We're not all about doom and gloom. Our message is a message of salvation and of hope."

On Friday afternoon, a small group of eccentrics, gawkers and media opportunists convened outside Family Radio's closed office building. A sign posted on the front door said "SORRY WE MISSED YOU!"

As May 21 drew nearer, followers say donations grew, allowing Family Radio to spend millions of dollars on more than 5,000 billboards and 20 RVs plastered with the doomsday message. In 2009, the nonprofit reported in IRS filings that it received $18.3 million in donations, and had assets of more than $104 million, including $34 million in stocks or other publicly traded securities.

Marie Exley, who helped put up apocalypse-themed billboards in Israel, Jordan and Lebanon, said the money helped the nonprofit save as many souls as possible.

She said she and her husband, mother and brother were glued to the television on Friday night waiting for news of an earthquake in the southern hemisphere. When that did not happen, she said fellow believers began reaching out to reassure each other of their faith in the prophecy.

"Some people were saying it was going to be an earthquake at that specific time in New Zealand and be a rolling judgment, but God is keeping us in our place and saying you may know the day but you don't know the hour," she said Saturday, speaking from Bozeman, Mont. "The day is not over, it's just the morning, and we have to endure until the end."

Camping recommended this week that followers surround themselves by their loved ones and not meet publicly, Exley said.

Some people wanted to make sure their pets receive good treatment, no matter what happens.

Sharon Moss, who founded AfterTheRapturePetCare.com to provide post-apocalypse animal care, said a new wave of customers has paid $10 to sign up in the last few weeks.

"A lot of people have said you should be out there saving souls not saving pets but my heart says `why can't you do both?'" said Moss, who identifies herself as Protestant.

Judgement Day is actually October 21
Yahoo!7
May 24, 2011, 2:00 pm

The man who warned Judgement Day would come at the weekend says his prophecy was off by five months and will in fact come on October 21.

The independent Christian radio host Harold Camping emerged for the first time since the 'Rapture' he predicted to occur on May 21.

Mr Camping told the San Francisco Chronicle he was "flabbergasted" that the world did not end on Saturday and had been taking refuge in a motel with his wife.

"I'm looking for answers," he said.

"Now I have nothing else to say.”

Warnings of Judgement Day by the preacher appeared premature on Saturday despite sending some people into hiding or rushing to repent, as others partied to savour their time on Earth.

Mr Camping's prophecy insisted the so-called ‘Rapture’ will begin with powerful earthquakes at 6pm local time in each of the world's regions, after which the good would be transported to heaven.

According to the 89-year-old and his religious broadcasting network Family Radio, the not-so-good would suffer hell on earth until October 21, when God will pull the plug on the planet once and for all.

One of the first places to be hit, according to Camping, who first wrongly predicted the end of the world in 1994, would be New Zealand, but 6pm came and went with no earthquakes and little local media attention.

In Australia, another early target of Camping's doomsday predictions, Christians greeted news of the end of the world with scepticism and humour before the fateful hour passed without incident.

“It's not being taken seriously at all," theologian Ian Packer from the Australian Evangelical Alliance told AFP, saying the May 21 deadline was being greeted with "openly humorous talk."

"Aside from hearing about Harold Camping in the media, we would not have known about his existence," he added.

In Europe, the deadline arrived with little fanfare, and even fewer people ascending dramatically to heaven.

Internet users, meanwhile, joked about creating a fake Rapture if Camping's prediction did not pan out.

On Twitter, non-believers suggested laying out old clothing and shoes on pavements and lawns to give the impression that someone had indeed been beamed up, or releasing inflatable dolls into the sky.

Others joked about a whole lot of paperwork facing authorities as pranksters threatened to file thousands of missing person reports, just for fun, and the perfect pick-up lines for that final romance before the end, such as: "I promise it won't be awkward in the morning."

In the United States, where Camping's evangelising group is based, some people had quit their jobs and hit the road to urge others to repent before it was too late.

Teens guilty of vampire attack
AAP
May 24, 2011, 9:28 am

Forget Twilight and True Blood. Two New Zealand teenagers thought they'd try out vampire attacks themselves, pinning down and biting their victim as he squirmed in pain.

The teens have faced a court in Wellington and pleaded guilty to the vampire-style attack many believe was inspired by the latest craze in “emo” demon books and movies.

The pair, James Orr, 19, and Xenia Borichevsky, 19, admitted leading their victim, who has permanent name suppression, into a clearing in New Zealand's capital and forcing him to the ground.

“He was overpowered when he was drunk and vulnerable, he was restrained and bitten,” Judge Bruce Davidson told the court, the Dominion Post reported.

The 18-year-old was left with “nasty” bite marks on his chest and arms, where the skin was broken, and a bruised stomach.

One of the bites was so deep it became infected and required hospital treatment.

Judge Davidson said the attack, in February last year, had left the victim mentally unstable.

Revealing background in the bizarre case, he said a third and a fourth boy had been drinking, playing a consensual “slapping game“ and doing piercings in the hours before the attack.

Borichevsky defended her actions, saying she thought the victim didn't mind, and stressing she'd tried to calm the situation by saying he “had bad blood”.

She was sentenced to 200 hours community work but discharged without conviction.

Orr, who had previous convictions, did not get off so lightly. He was ordered to do community detention as well as community work for his role.

The third man, James Brooks, pleaded guilty over the attack last year.
