Allowing NRL players to play elsewhere in the off season

Was thinking if the NRL and Clubs let their players in the off season,if they choose to play in Japanese Rugby or some of the European union competitions which don't conflict with the NRL seasons.
This would increase the income that players could generate and make it far more difficult to be poached by rival codes and ESL.
It may showcase the NRL to a new audience, the Japanese fans may switch on to the WT's to watch Benji play casue they have seen him play in there league. Could generate a new revenue stream in the long term.

There would be disadvantages to the clubs by having there players unavailable in pre season, their fitness would prob not be adversely effected, however they would be not able to learn new systems in attack and defence, i think they could prob catch up, and all sides would be in the same boat.

It is worth considering IMO.

The NRL should maybe try to build relations with the Japanese Rugby where some players could go in the off season, and then use it as an opportunity to spread rugby league and the NRL. Japan has been screwed heavily by the IRB over the years and there is potential to grow the game imo, also the Japanese seem decent at running and passing side of the game but get hammered in the union rucks and mauls.

Players should stick and commit to the NRL if they have a club and contract. If it was come and go as you please, you will have player burn out and the NRL will become a second rate spectical.

Commit to your club, that involves training throughout the off season. You want to play Rugby in Japan, go right ahead, just get a release from your NRL contract. Signing a massive contract to play a rival code overseas while your teammates go through intense pre-season training isn't exactly the sign of a good team player.

Definately no.

What if a player suffers a long term injury playing in Japan or elsewhere.

Marshall and Hayne need to put their heads in.

I have no respect for the money hungry, code hopping [This word has been automatically removed] $BW.

I do not want to see the NRL become a second rate competition.

100% agreed!!!

I think the NRL should allow players to get paid to endorse products, especially for their club's sponsors. I think not allowing them to earn outside of their NRL deals is a restrict on trade.

Isn't that what we are trying to prevent, players leaving to go overseas.

If Benji (or someone else) gets offered twice what they can earn in the NRL to play Japanese rugby, many will take the opportunity. If a few go and are a success than Japanese rugby will come and get more and more NRL players.

The NRL will never be able to compete with Japanese rugby on price, the clubs dont have to run at profit as they are owned by businesses that are prepared to plough cash into there teams.

I hear fans complain about the player drain and demand the players be loyal and should want to play in the "greatest competition in the world", most of us if offered double what we are on to change jobs, would almost certainly take the cash, and not surprisingly so do footballers.

If we want to keep stars we might have to make some concessions.

Cricket has gone down this path already, allowing players to globe trot around the world with 20/20, but even before this, as players would play the off seasons in county cricket.

Limiting what players can earn is long term frought with danger.

The players don't want a longer NRL season because of burnout and they think they play to many games now, I understand that the money is good in Japan or Europe union but they would be playing non stop really then u will have more burn out and more injuries

Thats one way of looking at it.

Looking after an investment in your product.

Is another.

My emplyer cant prevent me from obtaining work the moment I knock off until say midnite, they cant prevent me from working from that knock off at midnite in another job that finishes just before I start my current job….I can do what I like

But when it starts to affect my employment....there is a reason for my employer to have a word, maybe offer an ultimatum or similar

for many years I worked secondary employment, and either job did not conflict with other, or cause issues.
was lucky as secondary employment was with motorsport so it was seasonal.

Just look at how its screwed cricket up….competitions all over the place, no one knows whos playing where, empty grounds...what a mess
