Am I being too negative about today's performance ??

What does that actually mean though? We got beat. We got 0 competition points. Dolphins won and got 2 points against better competition. The players get paid to turn up next week and try and win again.
If we play that way again but score more points when we get attacking opportunities we win. A lot different to being outplayed by the opponent.

I'm having a shocker of a week to be honest ??

But am I being too negative with my points raised in the Live Game thread

Maybe our defence in the main was slightly better than our average 2022 performance ...but what else was better than 2022

Chance for the fans that can see the positives of todays performance to maybe steal us from the Dark side
I’m never going to say someone’s being too negative. I think many Tigers fans have copped it for years and that takes a toll.

What I would say though is that I think our overall defence was better, particularly in the middle. Some of the try’s came from poor fullback positioning and or not contesting the ball. Hopefully these things can be fixed fairly quickly.

The thing I saw more today than last year was effort. Not perfect but significantly better. We shot ourself in the foot with errors, particularly unforced simple errors. I would have thought skill drills would have addressed this but sadly not. Having said that, I can’t see how you go from the Canberra trial to round 1 and lose the ability to catch a ball so I’m chalking it up to rust and a bit of playing for points pressure.

I thought the spreading the ball asked plenty of questions of the Titans and looked more dangerous than most games last year so with an improvement to our handling I reckon points will come.

And here’s the hand-grenade, I reckon Brooks will come good (and I’m not even a fan).
I saw some runs today that nearly cut the Titans open. Still needs some passing improvement but it was his first game without any trials so reckon the new style of play will suit him.

A lot of sideways ball movement and guys wanting to run sideways , Doueihi showed with his try that you just need to run hard . With a more direct playing style and some more time getting to know the hooker’s game, I think we will improve a lot.
We need to do both otherwise it gets predictable but our players seem to struggle with deciding when to do either and don't actually play what's on the field and instead do it at random even if the play is obviously not on

You need to go down Main Street and then go to the fringes when you have the momentum or a clear overlap. We were going to the edges and then stepping back infield because we simply ran out of room. Our attack was very poor but that’s fixable. We still need a superstar like Turbo who can break a game open.

We played a completely different style. We passed and offloaded a lot, and changed direction a lot. Our forwards rolled up the field easier than last year. We dominated field position unlike last year. We didn't concede a lot of penalties unlike last year.

If you're really really upset with that game, I'd say you probably had unrealistic expectations. We won the spoon last year and have made 3 finals' in our 23 year history. It's not gonna click straight away, and that's if it does at all.

Imo nothing in today's game was disastrous or unexpected at this stage of our development.

However we still have a few players in key positions who aren't up to it and have way too many error prone players.

Early days
Mate again not trying to be negative ...but if we have picked our best side barring Bateman ......how do you propose we improve when our best key position players played ??

Yeah it’s just different language I guess. To me if you lose you lose. If they play that way again they’ll lose more than they’ll win.

That doesn’t mean you can’t learn from the experience. And importantly I don’t hold it against them moving forward.

We had enough ball in their 20 today we could have scored 30+. If our attack improves, we win these games in the future. That's still an if but I'm willing to be patient.

It is a new era. We have 2 years of Benji shadow coaching under Sheens, then 5 of Benji. Lots to go yet. I'm in for the ride tbh, I reckon Benji is a very attractive coach to play under rn and we'll go alright eventually. Chooks lost to the Phins today. Early days.
If we have a bad year then Benji becomes a very unattractive coach..... for another 4 years

You're right mate, but this constant disappointment takes a toll on your mental health. At the end of the day it's just a game but yeah.

Hap, it's the same old story, they train really well, morale is better than it's ever been yada yada, but when the whistle blows, they behave like they don't know each other, almost like they're waiting around for someone to either tell them what to do or to lead the way.
To me that's a coaching issue.? The team is simply not prepared well enough to go out there and immediately take the bull by the horns.
Do these guys socialise?
Do they actually know each other?
Or do they only catch up at training and game day?
I know that Nathan Hindmarsh believes the problem is caused by having 2 head coaches, each coaching different plays and not being on the same page.
This could be true, they did look confused out there?
Fans have a reason to be disappointed. But at the same time any coach CEO or Chair who takes on these roles is not simply building a team, they should be building an organisation, and that's a big task, given the hurdles involved.
I remember you saying in 21 I think it was that the rebuilding of the team to reflect a modicum of success would take 5 years?

I'm gutted, I was really thinking this would be a new era.
Can I just say mate, dont be gutted, while you have Benji,Farah,Sheens and Pascoe in the joint it will only fatten the pension fund....this joint needs a professional up heaval, out with the old and in with the new...
Heres food for thought...everyone on here said what a poor squad the Dolphins have got...

BUT GEE WHAT A GREAT COACHING PERFORMANCE TO GET THEM TO WIN FIRST UP AGAINST A PREMIERSHIP SIDE...

Change my mind....

Looked disjointed. Some of it I think was the result of API, ice & brooks not having played a trial.

We were rolling forward, but we’re not direct. I would like to see Klemmer and Stefano go one after the other before going wide

As a coach you need to park that and move onto next week. It’s a lot easier to move onto next week because we did a few things better than them. Effort and intensity were there. That’s a start. Clearly ball security and our good ball attack are where we need to improve. Give the new combinations a bit of time.

I’ll be more negative if/when I see laziness / lack of effort.
