Analysis of lack of strike / options

I was watching the game on Nine. Gould kept calling for the ball to go to Marsters. But whenever we looked like going right, Canterbury's defence was already up in our faces, so we changed our plan.

As good as Thompson has been at the back, he really lacks that punch in the opposition 20. He doesn't have the ability to ball play but has the ability to run. We should give him a lot of early ball to run and then when the defense numbers up on him, use him as a decoy.

It's actually very frustrating, we tend to learn from our mistakes and do get better as season progresses but the other teams always seem to learn faster than us.

Brooks passing game has some blame. I can't recall the last time I saw a cut out ball. It's all short passing to 2nd rowers.

It's really easy for the defence to read him.

I watched Moses throw cut out passes both sides of the field on Saturday to get their attack going, it is no surprise he is leading the try assists in the NRL

You can blame our halves as much as you like ...but based on Saturday night we would have got better service from Stevie Wonder at dummy half than Taylor

I intentionally took plays where the service was alright. You can't give the whole attack a leave pass because a makeshift DH was put in.

@jirskyr yes and all that being said, the Raiders have come from average performers to title contenders in the last 5 years in the same time as we have been spinning our wheels on the spot. I guess they have had the benefit of consistency in their coach. One day we may have that too and get the same result. The wait is frustrating.

But that causes problems in itself because you just don't know where the next pass will be

As I said game day the only time I gave our halves a real thumbs down was the intercept ...not because of the intercept ...but the play was to go left again ...from memory the centre got caught at marker

I don't think the halves were particularly bad, so I agree with you there. I think often they looked to go outside and the options were poor. Benji was instrumental in the big finish and you have to wonder where that urgency was from the side in the previous 70 minutes.

I do think the fact our team has had different coaches every year almost for the last 5 years is a major cause of this. Every year our players and especially Brooks has had to learn a whole new defensive pattern first and then new attacking patterns.

Plus add all the changes to our spine - even this year a new fullback halfway through the year.

In saying that Brooks is really high in the try assists stats and the team has actually scored a lot more tries then under Ivan the terrible (attacker).

If we could kick goals we would be in the top 6

Admittedly Brooks does need some variety in his passing game, he does pass almost exclusively short to the outside man at the line (generally the second rower.) It is rather predictable.

I feel like our attack is more, 2 or 3 hitups (often one out) to put on the one play, then hitup then kick.

Watching melbourne's game closely, for a large majority of the game they had 2/3 players in motion every play.

Im not sure why this is so hard to do, that second half we were so one out it wasn't funny
