Braith Anasta to partner Benji Marhsall in the halves for Wests Tigers

WESTS Tigers coach Mick Potter has turned to veteran Braith Anasta to help his club rediscover their spark in attack.

Potter sensationally wielded the axe yesterday, dropping young halfback Jacob Miller to reserve grade following his club's hot and cold start to 2013, in a move which will see star Benji Marshall switch to the halfback position and partner with Anasta.

Coming off a 26-0 thumping by Manly in round four, Potter is confident his club's attack will be more stable with Marshall and Anasta sharing responsibility for steering their team around the park.

Ahead of the Tigers' daunting clash with the Storm in Melbourne on Monday, Potter said last night Anasta and Marshall fully support the change and believe it is the best way for the Tigers to challenge the top sides in the NRL.

"We think it's the best thing for the team," he said.

"I'm pretty comfortable with the change and the guys are pretty comfortable.

"They obviously want to perform at their best and they all think this is the best way and they're reasonable happy with it."
 
What else are the players going to say? and I'm sure Braith loves the idea, it's what he always wanted at the Roosters, even to their detriment
 
and so in a week or two when this fails..which it will..what then ? back to Miller ? Moltzen ? this looks like a long season if Potter picks his team like Teflon..hold on ..a thought..Teflon is still being paid, maybe he picks the team .

Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter might be preparing to gamble with his selection of Braith Anasta at halfback, but if he wants a good omen he might be disappointed. Anasta has started one match of 261 at halfback, and the result is not one he will remember fondly.

Anasta's solitary match as a starting halfback, the round-17 clash between his Sydney Roosters outfit and Manly in 2007, resulted in a 56-0 defeat. Not only that, it was coach Chris Anderson's last match in charge of the club.

Now, Anasta is set to play his second match in the position, with Potter naming the new Tigers signing in the No.7 jersey alongside five-eighth Benji Marshall for Monday night's clash with Melbourne at AAMI Park. The idea is not quite a novel one; when he signed Anasta, then Tigers coach Tim Sheens did so looking at him as a halfback.

But even Anderson, who stood down from the Roosters job the night after the heavy defeat, admitted on Wednesday he believed the move should be brief. ''I don't see him as a halfback,'' Anderson said. ''It's not something you're going to do for more than a couple of games. He's not a halfback, especially at this stage of his career.''

Anderson said he could not recall why he started Anasta at halfback in 2007\. He had originally named him at lock, but made a late switch, moving Craig Wing to hooker. Even having Andrew Johns as halfback would not have made the difference when your team is being beaten by that margin. But it still doesn't bode well as a reference.

Anasta, who has played 214 games as a five-eighth and 36 in the back row, made seven runs for 80 metres in his one outing as a starting half against the Sea Eagles, kicked seven times for 154 metres, and made six tackle breaks and one offload. It needs to be noted Anasta would have moved into the position through the course of other games.

Also, in many teams, the difference between halfback and five-eighth is simply the number on their back. But that has not, generally, been the Tigers' way. Marshall has played second receiver, with Jacob Miller inside him, so far this year, so it remains to be seen whether Potter will alter his structure.

The club is giving little away, but it appears Potter will not make late alterations. It had been thought the coach might still switch Tim Moltzen into halfback, with James Tedesco moving from winger to fullback, but Potter is by all accounts not considering that change. ''We're hoping that Braith steers us around the park with his past experience,'' Tigers assistant coach Royce Simmons said. ''He's played a lot of football and a lot of rep football in the halves, so we're hoping that combination will get us in good field position.''

Also said we played on Friday instead of Thursday. Such simple things to get wrong, you wonder if they even watched it before writing.
 
When we signed Anasta I was quite happy to see him play in the pack. But at 13 not 11..the move back to the halves is of no concern to me. What is a concern is halfbacks that don't stand up in the team when given a go. But hopefully he has more possession then what he has had in the first 4 rounds and the possession stats from roosterman hopefully higher lol
