Another Benji Marshall Thread

Alright, I thought i'd voice my opinion on the 'magician' Benji Marshall.

First, take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0mLzdfFMUU

As you can see, a LOT of those tries weren't off benji's speed, they were off his ability to read plays, luck and his step. But a lot of the time that happened in WINNING teams because that is where benji excels. If the team is losing he feels the pressure of the how ever many thousand strong crowd, commentators and fans to be Benji Marshall - mircale worker but unfortunately when you go for the hail mary pass twice as much in poor situations (cause you're losing), it ain't gonna come off. So he ends up looking like Benji Marshall - The Greedy Overpaid Twat.

What Benji needs is three things:

1.) **A forward pack** to lay a platform. Not roll over the top of teams, just make solid metres (avg. in the NRL is great). This is actually not for Benji cause benji doesn't reaallly need a dominant forward pack to score tries. As you can see in the highlight reel a vast amount of his tries weren't from inside their 20 they were from half way. What this does is allow the rest of the team to score and take immense pressure off of Benji.

2.) **Solid centres and wingers**. We don't need a backline of marikas and josh morrises but rather beau ryans who are solid defensively and can catch a ball and hit holes well and have SOME speed to finish benji's plays as well as others' plays.

3.) **A halfback.** Everyone's said it and I'm just reiterating but he needs someone to take the pressure of him and score tries and set up tries too. Even just scoring + setting up 10 tries a season would be enough as long as he takes some of the other responsibilities from benji like long kicks, cause Benji can't do it all!

Surely you guys can understand pressure, right? If you're being paid 6 figure sums to perform on the field and you're down 20-0 you'd inherently place pressure on yourself to DO SOMETHING but that in turns forces Benji to play his hand again and again till he screws up.

I really can't believe that a someone who played as well as the guy in that video (and i can find you another 30minutes of his magic) will end his career playing like he has this season. But, if it comes to that we definitely don't want him locked in till his mid 30's at 800k, so make him earn his pay cheque.

Surely you understand it takes longer than 3 years to get all those. Hopefully your not thinking of re-signing Benji.

I'd say we can do it in 2 years; i'm not asking for too much a solid centre and a good prop would get us most of the way and we could do that in a season if we got a bit lucky for once. Halfback isn't really needed with brooks, sirro, moses for the coming years and anasta for 2013.

And i said he has to earn his paycheque before we can consider resigning him. If he leaves, so be it, but we still have him till 2015\. Another 2 season after this, so i want to try to utilise that cap space as best we can and I reckon that's the optimal way to without asking for too much from our cap.

A champion on his day. He has all of the above in the New Zealand team. Sometimes his diamonds sometimes his rocks even with all that. Thats Benji no matter who's around him… :astonished:

wow…yeah good point. i'd say his captaincy doesn't really help and the fact the opposition is SO good but I hadn't really considered that to be honest. But, I'm just trying to think of the best way to utilise some 2 million cap space over the next few season while staying realistic and not overspending.

Left out the bit about needing a no 9 that is solid and fast up the middle .

Pretty simple really, isn't it…
Benji was his best with A) Scott Prince & B) Robert Lui in the #7
Genuine halfbacks.

It's been our concerns since they both left.
We need to address this first,
then get some hard hitting forwards to get us going forward.

Yep. I think he needs to play halfback and be solid rather than going for the big plays all the time. He needs to run it from there as well.

Lui and Prince could be considered 6's rather than 7's but they slotted into 7 no problems. Both of them had good running games as well.

Benji was his best when he did ran the ball heaps and didn't ball play much but his game has changed. Now he is more of a ball player and more of a complete player. The problem is he still has that go for broke attitude. I think that is what is stuffing him up.

Is Brooks the answer to this?

I think Sironen could be kh. That halves combo could work the other way around and with a full week training i reckon. Well see on Friday I guess

Maybe well see brooks in fg when the salary cap isn't under so much pressure

I think he is. Got the organisiing and kicking game down.

Only thing is his size and defence. Anyone see how he went in NSW cup in terms of defence? Haven't heard anythign specifically mentioned about that as yet.

3.) A halfback.

Who doesn't? Particularly half back, a chronic issue not just with us, but with the game in general.

The thing is with above ^ it's the same for any genuine playmaker in this game.

Jamie Soward is awfully mediocre when his team is losing, just look at last year and now apparently this year. (If you watched the game last night, that backs this up)
Ben Barba has also been very quiet this year, maybe due to the issues at the start of the year, but no doubt the Bulldogs are in a slump and Reynolds and Barba have both been absent IMO.

Maybe one exception could be Melbourne, as they have 3 dominant playmakers in their side, which could also be the reason why they are so good at what they do. If one player is off, the other 2 generally pick up the slack however, If you caught the game Saturday night, they were actually all really average, going for the 1% plays including that last minute play with the kick and Slater was offside.

The thing with above is that you're saying for Benji to be good is to, basically, have a good team. We have an average team ATM and there's not a lot we can do until Potter can develop a side he wants.

Some 5/8s dont need a good half back, and some require a DOMINANT forward pack while benji doesnt. Just needs a solid one to take pressure of himself.

Correct, Since Prince left there hasnt been anyone dominant in the halves to take charge and let Benji do his own thing.

We all know he is not a general on field and he couldnt organise …. anything even he tried.
Benji is a free range variety who does his own thing. Whoever his partner is needs to man up and take control in the halves so Benji can improve his own game and do those random things he does
