Are Fifita and Gibbs off to the Sharks?

Sharks complete Tagataese deal
June 14, 2011 - 4:30PM

The signings of Sam Tagataese and Jeff Robson may not be the end of the good news for long-suffering Cronulla fans with the NRL club hopeful of completing deals for Bryce Gibbs and Andrew Fifita this week.

The Sharks have tabled offers for the Wests Tigers props, and although the pair has yet to formally agree on a switch to Toyota Stadium, the club is anticipating news of their arrival before the weekend.

A Sharks official told AAP the deals could be done this week but said there were still issues to resolve before an official announcement.

New Zealand-born Tagataese, who can play at centre or in the backrow and started his career with Melbourne, joined the Sharks from Gold Coast on Tuesday and was named on an extended bench for Sunday's clash with Canterbury at ANZ Stadium.

Halfback Robson, who helped guide Parramatta to the 2009 grand final, will depart the Eels at the end of the season after agreeing terms on a two-year contract with the Sharks.

The acquisitions of Tagataese and Robson come hot on the heels of young stars Stewart Mills, Albert Kelly and Chad Townsend agreeing to extend their contracts in recent weeks.

The Sharks, who have lost front-rowers Luke Douglas and Kade Snowden to the Titans and Newcastle respectively, have also been linked with another Tigers player.

Utility back Mitch Brown is believed to be a target for the club he left last season.

I wonder whether the club should be tracking Josh Hoffman or Gerard Beale from the Broncs. In my view, the best position for both these two guys is at fullback and obviously 2 into 1 doesnt go.

I rate Hoffman very highly.

I bring this up in this thread because I cannot imagine that all these rumoured losses - Payten, Gibbs, Fifita, Brown, Daniella, Flanagan (perhaps Fulton - are only being replaced by one player. It doesnt seem right to me, unless the balance of our squad is completely wrong.

Fulton may be staying.

Based on what? I know your mail is pretty spot on so I'm not having a crack. Just wonder if its related to other players now leaving or Blair not signing or Fulton re-negotiating to stay for less

If Fults can amstay injury free he will be a valuable member of the team. He was freakishly talented as a junior and he still has it in him.

Even if Fults stays, we are giving away a significant chunk of our costs. Where is the money going?

If we dont make any significant purchases (other than Blair) i can only assume we have a very top heavy squad.

Either you are making crap up or Humphreys is.

Why would i make up crap?? I didn't start this thread…

Not doubting you mate. Just saying that either you OR Humphreys are talking BS.

Did you read today's article on Heighington??
I reckon my posts in this thread hold better footing than any of the BS dished up by Humpty so far regarding who is being pushed out of the club…

i know it doesn't really affect the tigers at all, but the sharks announced earlier today that taufua and de gois will be at the club next year just as i mentioned in this thread.

Humphreys is!!

Another piece of good news for Wests Tigers is the extension given to prop Andrew Fifita following an agreement between Andrew and the Club to exercise an option in his current contract for the 2012 season.

Fifita, 21, has been a revelation for Wests Tigers since making his NRL debut in Round Two last year after joining the Club from Griffith Waratahs. Like Woods, he too was a member of the NSW Emerging Blues squad.

His mobility, hard work and offloads have seem him develop into a regular member of the Wests Tigers forward pack. Fifita has played 31 NRL matches for Wests Tigers and represented Tonga last year.

“I’m enjoying my footy here at Wests Tigers and I’m learning every day. We have a good squad here so it is exciting to know that I will be apart of that for a while yet,'' Fifita said.

Wests Tigers Chief Executive Stephen Humphreys said that it was important to secure Woods and Fifita for a longer period, especially after both players progression through the Club’s development system.

“Aaron and Andrew are showing maturity beyond their years and are perfect examples of the depth we now have throughout our player roster,” Humphreys said.

“They’ve both had a lot more game time this year which will only benefit their development and the Club in the long run."
