Assistant coaches

Is it documented who appointed the new assistant coaches? The Terrorgraph says "The Tigers" appoint new assistant coaches. Who normally makes this choice in other NRL teams, the coach or others? I'm very happy in the choices made in Payten & Kidwell and think this is going to give the team a massive boost, but do you think that part of the reason in choosing these two is a kind of insurance policy incase Potter doesn't live up to expectations next year? (personally I believe Potter & the team will exceed all expectations)

Payten has worked with many of our young up and coming "superstars" Thinking he will be the attacking coach and Kidwell will be the defensive coach

Hope this is the case, just thinking if it wasn't potter choosing these guys, then maybe part of the choice may have had an agenda to not find ourselves in the coaching issues we had this year. Either way, it is a positive all round. I think Mayers appointment might be starting to take effect in turning us into a force into the future!

Payten is being groomed as the heir apparent IMHO ….. If the results don't come in the first dozen or so rounds in 2014, I expect him to take over from Potter sooner rather than later.

Was thinking this, and if me and you are thinking it and Potter didn't choose these guys, then you can sure as sh!t know that Potter is also thinking it! Just hope Potter doesn't alienate these guys because he sees them as a threat. I'm sure this won't be the case, just a thought!

we should get Andrew Johns as a halves coach. look what he has done to DCE and Foran at manly absolute superstars

I think I read somewhere he is contracted to Manly and can't work with other teams. Not sure how true this is.

With the increasing Polynesian influence in the NRL, Kidwell may be a masterstroke. But only time will tell.

That's a very good point sheer64\. I have a lot of Poly mates and they certainly respond and accept guidance better from people of the same culture. They are big family people and I'm sure some of the kids (especially the young guys from places like Keebra) miss having their family close and I'm sure having an elder bloke like Kidwell around would certainly help with these young guys.

I hope someone gets through to these guys, I don't expect to immediately perfectly uniform defensive patterns every single set….but I'd love to see better attitude and mongrel instead of relaxed arm grabbing.

That would be a great idea …Payten is struggling to motivate boys or hasn't anybody noticed...Kidman yes but Payten just another job for the boys !at this stage a very poor selection of assistant coach IMO as there are better options out there.

I just dont want Kidwell to become another Stephen Kearney….

Different situation altogether - Kidwell would be signed as assistant coach - Kearney was thrown to the wolves at Parra - Anderson had been sacked after 1 poor season and the club in their infinite wisdom signed guys like Carl Webb and Chris Walker to save them. I'd say Kearneys situation was closers to Potters this year.

I really think we should approach Brad Fitler to be halves coach or consultant. He knows football and would be great to work with our crop of very good young halves. If not Fitler I would go for Matthew Johns. I think halves coach/consultant is one area the club needs to bring in someone.

Not a fan of Matthew Johns. He seems well entrenched in the media now anyway, highly doubt he'd go back to the stress of coaching when he can act like a boofhead on radio and TV for more money.

Jason Taylor would be a handy pickup IMO. Has coached U20s at the Roosters and is now an assistant to Robinson. Was a handy half as well.

I'd rather JT as head assistant coach instead of Todd Payten….prepare him should the worse come to the worst in regards to Potter - he will need to produce miracles to survive post 2014 imo
JT - coach - gets some very good raps from some very good people

Taylor/Kidwell
