Aussies 2018 tour of South Africa Spoilers

In ten years time the average league fan will not have a clue who or what Tim Simonia did, but 9 out of 10 Australians will know all about Smith and Warner and to a lesser extent Bancroft. Most people get a second chance even after some pretty bad stuff, but I am afraid Warner and Smith have shut the door on a lot of things for life.

I have been told by a fellow poster on these forum, who was a very handy cricketer that he played against Warner in schoolboy reps and grade over a long period and Warner had the foulest mouth even in under 12s, but its Smith I can't understand, never heard a bad word about the guy, now he is done and dusted except maybe for a tell interview on 60 minutes

Yeah well as someone who has always walked I think standing your ground when you know you've edged it is wrong. It's one thing to feather it and not be sure, another entirely to nick it to second slip and stand there like you've done nothing wrong.

Worst thing about it is your own teammates tear you to shreds for having integrity.

I don't walk - I get enough dud calls. But I'd have no part of ball tampering. If I was in a team that did that, even in the lowly level of cricket worlds I inhabit, I'd be out of there.

absolutely right yossarian- you wouldnt want to be part of that team.
in junior sport, sportsmanship and fair play is encouraged - to all those milo cricketers out there the smithgate affair wouldnt make much sense.
i hope those involved get suspensions that ends their careers- severe, but the damage they have done is warranted.

If the Aussies have a settled opening pair next summer, I think that’ll be enough of an excuse to not bring Warner back into the side. Absolute scumbag who can”t stay out of trouble. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s played his last test. As for Smith, surely he’ll never captain the side again.

Warner is cooked I think. He'll chuck his toys out of the cot and become a professional T20 mercenary.

Smith will be back and I am not happy about that, and I say this as someone who was a fan of his. Even though he was caught doing the deed, Bancroft is the only one I would tolerate to see back in the side again, he was another Trevor Chappell, a patsy following captains orders.

Agree with the suspensions.

I can only see Smith play for Australia again but never as captain again.

Warner to play T20 around the world like Chris Gayle.

Bancroft to fade away and be future trivia answers

Morons. 12 month bans seem harsh but fair for the damage they've done to the reputation of Australian cricket. Massive fall from grace for Smith…

who will replace Smith

If you mean as captain it will be Tim Paine (that has also been announced). Don't know who is going to average 60+ with the bat for us though, hopefully a bloke that doesn't cheat…

Is it harsh? They will miss 1 or 2 test series tops.

Bans seem fair. I wonder if it will be from all cricket or just cricket within Australia.

Warner will become the next Chris Gayle.

Smith will need to work hard to come back and will have a point to prove so will be hungry but won't have an opportunity to come back until the 2019/20 season. There's test matches against India (4), SriLanka (2), a possible tour of Pakistan (3) and an Ashes tour (5) - so that's 14 tests for a new team to be established may be hard to get back in after that especially with a tainted history.

Bancroft will struggle to get back and has ruined his opportunity. He was banging on the door of the test team for a long time but imo Renshaw should have kept his spot and is the longer term opener for mine. He'd have Usman as his partner.

I still feel that other heads may still roll in this whole saga.

CA buying some time to see if public outrage dies down before deciding on a final sentence. They be gone until after the next ashes at least beyond that who knows. These 3 will have to put in massive performances to force their way back in after that imo. Lehmann lucky at this stage he may fall in the coming weeks.

Its not dying down. Fox Sports FB page posted an article yesterday pushing an idiotic conspiracy theory that Smith knew nothing about it, and is taking the blame so its not all on Bancroft, and they got smashed. Why Smith would risk his career and reputation like that was conveniently not explained.

Moises Henriques tweeted that was his "uneducated opinion," but thought Smith didn't realise how much the story would blow up.
