I don't think the Roosters would want to remember this year's Australia Day. The team would have been better off if their ferry sprung a leak in Sydney Harbour. At least they would have had lifejackets.

But lifesavers reported there was a shiver of 13 sharks just in from Cronulla

Talking for a sharks .. I've been in the surf at Manly five out of last six days. Heaps of activity in the water. Yesterday I had two dolphin out there with me. Sunday big schools of fish jumping everywhere, something was chasing them , I think they were whiting or Taylor (the fish, not coach) . The Shark alarm has gone off a few times and the beach was closed for a while on the weekend. You get a few bronze whalers in Sydney around this time of year. Generally up till Easter .

Where that giant shark took that guy at Byron in Sept 2 years was exactly same time and place I swam every day - only because was injured at that time was not there.

What surprises me up here is that they put the flags right alongside the rip and they don't have bods with whistles warning swimmers when getting near danger. Maroubra lifesavers with whistles were excellent for keeping eye on swimmers nearing danger. They used whistles once after I got up them about it.

If the beach has pretty consistent surf, there will generally be quite a few rips along the beach. You try and position the flags between the rips , which means there will be rips going out both sides of the flags. When lifesavers are on patrol the main thing is keeping watch over a 4-5 hour period and keep the communication going. Some lifesavers will blow the whistle a lot. When I'm on patrol I try not to use the whistle to much. I prefer the swim over with a tube or rescue board and explain to swimmers that keep drifting outside the flags how close the are to the rip. Once you point out the rip to them and show them how fast the water is moving, they general are pretty thankful for the chat. I always try and keep the conversation friendly and explain to the where the rip ends. So if they do get caught in it, just to try to relax and not panick

There are warning signs in entry to Byron beach, but in the unpatrolled areas where surf is stronger and more dangerous the surf has also caused a lot of erosion. So now the signs are about 6 foot off the ground and as erected horizontally so only god or seagulls can read them now. And they don't really need them.
