Balmain Leagues club site to be demolished?

They are an absolute shambles. A lot of the guys on here actually fell for the councils spin with their prior announcement, but all they did was throw out a largely unprofitable option that was something they created themselves!

The mind boggles about these guys. I don't know how they get off telling a developer that they have to give part away for free.

Will be interesting what happens. I think Darcys voice is limited somewhat at the moment as the council is controlled by the greens… Who are even worse.

I reckon Leichhardt council should fund the club given the mess they have put them through.

I have a question to someone that might know..why is Balmain trying so hard to move back to an area that did not support the old and probable larger club at the time. Did the area support the club ,were there other interests in the area that helped the demise of the club or was the club just badly run. I am interested to know if a move back to the same area will reap rewards as the new club will be a much smaller version of the old one and the demographic would of changed even more . Hope someone could add some light.

The financial issues the club suffered last time at Rozelle were primarily based on going into debt to purchase surrounding properties based on advice from Council about what could assist their DA. After battling to get the support of Council, when they did the backers of the project halted all jobs because of the GFC (Lehmann Brothers backed the developers, and deal for the Tigers project was to be signed the day the bank went under) and this obviously worsened their financial position.

Having asked these questions before, I'm told the Club was profitable before they went into debt, and even when they were told to move out by the State Govt for the Sydney Metro. The area was essentially gentrified before this happened, and I would guess they'd be confident with a more efficient space to be profitable again even demographic change.

Unfortunately all of this gets lost in the people wishing to simply bash up the Club and the developer.

Club always did well Snake. Was never run down or empty.

Just a shame the labor party killed it off.

Thanks for that looks like they got shafted by every body.If built could' work out well for them cannot believe a development if not over the top could not be built so close to the CBD .

I'd prefer they built something out around concord/burwood if it could be secured & financed.

It's closer to where the supporter base is, and closer to where the asian gambling dollars are.

That formula has certainly worked for Wests Ashfield and the Doggies.

No more gambling dollars. I despise the fact that football clubs are run off the back gambling proceeds while families are going without.

The Tigers did make one crucial error. When the State Govt was going to move in, they could have easily posted a security guard at the premises so if it fell through, they could always move back in. Given Labors track record at that time, they really should have looked at worst case scenario.

Should we ban the sale of alcohol or cigarettes from Leagues Clubs too?

It would be great if the NRL funded each club 100%, as they have the funds to do so, however until that happens, clubs will need to find ways to make money.

Sunday afternoon meat raffles and Tuesday Night Bingo wont generate enough $$$ to run an NRL Club.

You can only gamble at clubs/casinos. You can buy smokes and piss anywhere Abe. I don't see people robbing houses or going into hock to buy a slab or a pack of darts.

You can stick a grand through the pokies in 20 minutes. If you can drink or smoke that amount in a week I'll come and shake your hand if you haven't died from alcohol or nicotine poisoning.

You can literally gamble anywhere nowadays. I can sit on the shitter at home and lay bets for a ferret race in London if I wanted to.

You can piss away your money on a zillion and one legal pursuits. The emphasis being 'legal'.

From a club perspective gambling is what keeps NRL clubs alive, and until someone comes up with a better formula it will stay that way.

Yeah I suppose, I was more referring to pokies moreso than wholesale gambling.

What separates gambling from alcohol/tobacco etc IMO is that it is a very quick way to do your arse.

And that's people's own choice. If they want to do that then why shouldn't they be able to?

Never said it wasn't Sabre… I'm not calling for gambling to be banned or anything extreme.

I've seen what gambling does to people first hand. Just think a "professional" sports team should find other revenue streams than rather than rely on pokies handouts. Hardly professional IMO.

Agree ..the profits of other people's addictions and grief it is not just pokies ,every where you look the Tab is in your hand .Ads like Cash out are pathetic ,but this is like most monetary things in this country theses organisations have to take what they can get from where ever they can get as the population of this country is just not large enough to supply the huge capital that these clubs and society needs to flourish hence massive deficits so taking gambling money is the only option.
