BALMAIN legend Paul Sironen has taken a swipe at outgoing Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor following his sacking yesterday. After two consecutive drubbings at the hands of Penrith and the Raiders, the Tigers confirmed on Monday they were ending Taylor’s time at the club, effective immediately.

While it may seem harsh to be shown the door just three games into a new season, especially after Wests’ first start 34-18 win over Souths, Sironen — who worked closely with junior players at the club before Taylor’s arrival — has little sympathy for the man responsible for ousting him from Concord.
“It was a little bit personal on a couple of fronts,” Sironen told the Triple M Grill Team. “Without a word, he (Taylor) never came to me once and said, ‘What’s your role here? What have you done?’ It was a case of, ‘See you later’ and I took that fairly personally as you would expect. “I thought I deserved a right to sit down and talk to me. I’d been a director for seven or eight years there, I’d worked in football operations with the state side and the Under-20s there so I thought I deserved a chat.”

Taylor was appointed coach for the 2015 season following a five-week internal review at the club conducted by veteran coach Brian Smith, who was hired as a consultant. Taylor worked with Smith at Parramatta, taking over from him as first grade coach midway through 2006.

Several staffing changes were made to the Tigers’ football department following Smith’s recommendations. Smith’s son Keegan was employed as a physical performance consultant at the club after stints in similar roles with the Catalan Dragons in France and the Sydney Roosters, a move that irritated Sironen.

“After the Brian Smith review, Jason Taylor came in rocking ready and it had a distinct Parramatta flavour and I believe one of Brian Smith’s sons had a role in the high performance unit, so I smelled a bit of a rat but didn’t say anything,” Sironen said. “I’ve had a front-row seat and watched the club lurch from one mishap to another. “I just want to see the joint go forward and I don’t think Jason Taylor is the man to take them forward.”

Sironen played nearly 250 games for the Tigers from the mid 1980s to the late 1990s. The club stalwart says he only wants what’s best for those in Tigerland. “I’ve got a strong emotional attachment to the joint, so I want to see them succeed,” he said.

GALLEN’S CHANGE OF HEART
Paul Gallen was no fan of the way Jason Taylor treated Wests Tigers legend Robbie Farah last year as the coach ended the 33-year-old rake’s time at the club. Gallen was of the opinion the acrimonious end to Farah’s career in the orange and black was a poor example to young players who had hopes of being a one-club player, but now the Cronulla captain has some sympathy for Taylor.

He says he feels sorry for the former Tigers coach given he was only allowed a short amount of time in 2017 to prove he was the right man to lead the Tigers to the finals for the first time since 2011\. “The way Robbie was treated I don’t think was a good example to the younger guys, a bloke who had dedicated his whole life,” Gallen said on Sky’s Big Sports Breakfast. “But I feel sorry for him (Taylor) at the moment. I was critical last year but now I feel sorry for him. “It’s the third round in and he’s been sacked already … it’s very early days so to be sacked real early is a bit of a concern.”

There were suggestions the Tigers so-called Big Four — Aaron Woods, James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks — who all come off contract at the end of 2017, were part of the reason behind Taylor’s demise. They refused to put pen to paper until they knew who would be at the helm in 2018, and The Daily Telegraph reported although the players “do not dislike Taylor”, they “feel they need new direction to become better players and win a premiership at the Wests Tigers”.

Gallen said the pressure is now on the players to prove they’re good enough to command the big dollars when they sign their next contract. “It places more pressure on the players now,” Gallen said. “We talk about the Big Four, they’re going to have to start winning games if they want to be in the big dollars.
“It puts a little bit more pressure on them and they have to start winning some games to take the team to the next level.”

Paul's attack is misguided.
He should be angry at the board. They put Brian Smith into motion to audit the club.
JT arrived after the audit and the board gave him the recommendations from the Brian Smith report. He was just doing his job that the board gave him and Moss.
The board shouldn't have given a newly appointed coach the job of firing people. Should have been done prior.

As for Curtis, he should see that his son isn't cutting it.
Parents are always like this with their own kids, especially footy dads.

And what is being missed in most of this is that its not the same board.

Petty, petty man.

The clubs 17 years in now. Surely there must be a legend that actually played for WT the media can turn too for these types of articles? Sick of seeing blocker, back door an sirro sr wheeled out for these rubbish articles.

I know they want this type of reaction ( beat up) so why not approach Gibbs or even terry hill! I'm sure he'd be good for a headline or two. These 3 are just cancer.

Doesn't matter.
The board in charge hired Taylor and handed him the report to start firing people.
JT wasn't firing people based on what he wanted.

Pauls' Gripe I find genuine… These club 'legends' they roll out in times like these, Generally are idiots (Elias) who have no real valid reason to be commenting on anything.
Paul has been heavily involved in the Juniors for some time - And actually busts his backside in that role.
No one could ever accuse him of not earning his keep... He went above and beyond. - And still does.
I heard him on MMM this morning and he said (In his words) "Curtis was his own worst enemy at times last year" and that "was bye and bye, he's at Manly now and trying to make a go of it over there"
The paper article seemed to embellish a bit on what he said this morning...

The fact he was sacked without so much of a "Hey mate, How's things - What have you been up to around here and how are we doing in that area?" Echoes much the same way Mat Head was treated...
Wasn't even afforded a conversation when it come to the coaching appointments, (Despite a premiership in SG Ball) Was just ignored until he found another appointment - In which he's killing it by the way, Now coaching ISP Champs...

It was obvious from the get go - That Taylor had a certain arrogance about him. I never knew if he was a genius or the bomb at the bus stop of his coaching career...
Either way, He lived it his way and I'd be shocked if he ever got another crack at it....

Back to Siro - He's firm but fair.... He was wronged the way he was dismissed like he was one of the boys club clinging onto a small part of the club because he was owed something.
He really puts in the hard yards in that role - It's there for anyone to see on any day....

Of course it matters. The current board who all and sundry are climbing into to criticise at the moment, are not the same board that did the Smith Review, hired Taylor or even sacked Sirro senior.

For mine the current board have done some good and encouraging things. Not sold on Go but maybe she is one who works well behind the scenes.

He at the very least deserved a conversation. Its just common sense and decency - you dont need a business degree to work that out.

I don't blame sirro for being upset if that's in fact what happened… Pretty disrespectful

Mate, When the same story is coming from more than one guy….
You'd have to think it has merit.

As I said, Mat Head said the exact same thing happened to him. Wasn't even gifted the courtesy of an informal chat.
Even if you've given the job to someone else.... You still sit down with the bloke that has it and give him a minute.
That's just common human decency....

Well it turns out Paul wasn't telling the truth.
I also think it's just about Curtis.

NRL Monday wrap up
Sacked Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor has broken his silence to defend himself against an attack by Balmain legend Paul Sironen, who publicly celebrated the dumping of Taylor.

Sironen delivered a withering send-off to Taylor on Monday night, saying "karma's a [This word has been automatically removed]" and telling the coach not to "let the door hit you out on the way out" - still fuming that he and his son Curtis had been punted from the club.

Sironen blamed the NRL coach, but Taylor has defended himself by insisting the decision to send the club legend packing from his role with the club's under-20s team was not his.
>
"I want to respond to some of Paul Sironen's published allegations about me," Taylor said. "I never sacked Paul Sironen and I never communicated his sacking to him. I also never made any decisions about NYC staffing at that time.
As to Paul's comments about what was said after he was sacked, I in fact went up to him, shook his hand and gave him my commiserations. He looked me in the eye and said, 'It's OK, I know it wasn't your decision'."

The former NSW State of Origin and Kangaroos forward was filthy over his exit from the joint-venture outfit three years ago following Smith's review, saying he was told by Taylor and football manager Phil Moss he would no longer be required.
However Taylor rejects the allegations put forward by Sironen on Monday.
>
"When the great Brian Smith strategic plan was implemented and Taylor came in, I was involved in the club," Sironen said. "I was involved numerous years as a director and with the 20s. He's entitled to turn the club upside down but without a single word of explanation he got rid of me.
They got me upstairs and said, 'You're no longer required', without saying thanks for giving 14-15 years here as an administrator, in football operations and in several different roles.

"I've been asked by several blokes over the last couple of years to give comments but I've always, out of respect, for the club bit my tongue. Now that's he's gone, I'm entitled to say my piece."

Meanwhile, Wests Tigers' major sponsor has backed the decision to sack coach Taylor, but warned the joint-venture outfit is now at a "critical juncture" in its history.

The Tigers are at a crossroads as they search for a coach and the signatures of their four most influential players. They do so at a time when their brand has been tarnished by the Tim Simona scandal and the messy departure of club legend Robbie Farah.

Hagipantelis last night described Taylor's sacking as an "unfortunate" but necessary step to turn the club's fortunes around.
>
"It was difficult, but had to be done," Hagipantelis said. "I don't disagree with the decision that has been taken by the CEO and the board.

Interesting article but i for one am more likely to believe someone who has done a lot for the club over many years compared to a "blow in" who has done nothing but cause problems at this club and at his last fg coaching gig at souths. He also white anted the coaches at the magpies and the bears. There is a common pattern with JT and it isnt a good one.Very happy he is gone

Actually if you read the article properly, Taylor doesnt actually contradict anything Sirro said. Sirro didnt say it was Taylor that told him he was sacked, Sirro said he was taken upstairs and routinely sacked.

Maybe Sirro thinks that Taylor had a say in who he wanted on board and who he didnt even if he didnt deliver the message. Lets face it head coaches usually do have a say on support staff.
Somewhere in between lies the truth and pretty sure Taylor was more than aware of Sirro s thoughts on the matter - everyone else seemed to know - and so he could of spoken to him about it long before now if he really wanted to clear the air.

JT has no man management or even mediocre people skills, this has been evident from when he first arrived at Wests from St Gregory's, it has continued his whole career, that is why I never wanted the bloke near the club and was so glad he got the spear yesterday. Lets bring in Cleary and forget about this fella.

I don't care who said what….bottom line is JT is out of here and Cleary will be here next Season

Who cares about this year lets get our foundations right for next Season and see if we can sign some proven players .
