Balmain saved from brink of extinction with new leagues club to come

I see this as a buy out , there is no way a club will be built at Rozelle that time has past, it is all rubbish talk that has been said before by the same person .
I suspect that Balmain or what is left of it has offered up the loan as they realise there done and will not be able to continue .. hence the West’s group take control of there juniors and pay out the loan .. but as for a club that is a very long bow !
It is sad that this has come to this but the Balmain board , politicians and some unscrupulous types have all had a hand in the clubs demise !but one undying symbol will never be takenen away from there heritage the Tiger still lives !

Entitled to your opinion Snake - I think you are totally incorrect.

If you think WA have paid the Balmain debt to the NRL and their portion owed to the WT just so they can get the Balmain Juniors …..???

Don't think so Chief!

Yeah, they must think there is a quid in it for them. Id assume there would be a good number of pokie licenses to start with.

West Ashfield are proposing to buy Balmains debt only …not the site

Benny sold it for $1..

Wests Ashield will cover Balmain RLFC debt to the NRL..not Balmain Leagues Club debts..people I often think get confused ..they are 2 separate entities..

Balmain RLFC are the JV Partners not Balmain Leagues..the leagues club proposal is seperate..

Can someone on here please break down
why Benny Ellias in no good for us…

I heard he's not a straight shooter...
whats the info, what's the situation?

But weren't they already doing that

To keep to the agreement Balmain had to pay their share …..

Hobbo's a bit of a handyman ....get him to rebuild Balmain's League's

OK so you'd get the same number on the roulette wheel every spinl and you'd walk around having to counteract the building fall ...beggars can't be choosers

Bouncing Benny the "White Knight" eh!

With friends like him, who needs enemies.

He should never be allowed anywhere near Balmain, Western Suburbs or the Wests Tigers ever, in his lifetime. As for making statements about the Wests Tigers - every time he makes one - it should be stated by the WT that he has nothing to do with the club and they should disclose some of the dealings in that Herald article.

He and Greenburg are a good pair.

Balmain football club had until 2022 to repay the amount. Balmain were never going to be able to repay it so i assume Wests have paid it early to avoid having any debt with the NRL when they start throwing out reasons for relocation. The leagues club proposal is a separate issue. As Wests Ashfield statement says it certainly is not a done deal yet. Creditors have agreed with the proposal so i assume some or all of the leagues club debt would be cleared if the club does get built. Wests would have control of profits, pokies licences etc. Wests must see that is there is money to be made or they wouldn't be doing it.

Tigers Flemington is currently making a profit and this deal would see them take control of that club. The profit out of Flemington would be minuscule when compared to Ashfield's profits though.

Yea thats true - as for a club at Rozelle - as others have said the demographics have dramatically changed from the days of Balmain Leagues being a force. So i would think any club would have to change to cater for the new demographic. So just following the old model of a restaurant, coffee shop, pokies and a TAB isn't going to work. It would be interesting to see what sort of model they would come up with.

Wests Ashfield have played this very smart. They have assumed 100% control of the Wests Tigers and all the leagues clubs (and future leagues clubs) and all the juniors without creating any animosity. In fact people are grateful.

Don’t get me wrong, they are fully committed to the Wests Tigers but they could have kicked Balmain to the curb and still been fully committed to the Wests Tigers. They’ve done it without disenfranchising anyone. Because while people have said numerous times on this thread “it’s now all about the Wests Tigers “, they’ve said it after expressing their appreciation for saving Balmain. There’s a contradiction there? If the best thing for the Wests Tigers was selling Balmains share to a rich privateer, shouldn’t we be grateful? No, because as much as everyone says the Magpies and Balmain are in the past, they are still important reasons why many are so passionate about the Wests Tigers. (Ps - there’s lunatics amongst the fringe supporters of both foundation clubs. I’ve read a few posts on Facebook by Balmain fans bagging Wests Ashfield for this saying “no thanks Balmain Leagues will go it alone”).

Wests Ashfield have played it very smart. So much so many are preferring to look at Wests Ashfield as an independent club rather than from the Wests side of the JV. A quick look at the boards of WSM and WA and a review of the annual report shows they are one and the same. It shouldn’t matter because they are fully committed to the Wests Tigers and all the fans say it’s all about the Wests Tigers but it still does matter to quite a lot of fans.

If Rozelle goes ahead it will be a Wests Tigers Leagues Club owned by Wests Ashfield. Balmain Leagues will no longer exist but there will be a merger of sorts so existing memberships will pass over to the Wests Leagues Clubs. Balmain Football Club will survive and they will have 2 board members on the Wests Tigers board. That’s not enough to influence the running of the Wests Tigers but it means no body is disenfranchised. Note: Balmain should also be able to resume playing some senior grade footy eg, Ron Massey Cup etc

If they have poker machines the people will come and sadly that is where the profit margin largely stems from most successful clubs . Its 5 mins from the CBD in one of the most densley populated areas in Sydney with numerous bus routes that stop at the door. It doesnt need to cater to local demographic - which is largely misconstrued as being a certain type. There are loads of Wests Tigers fans in the area you only have to see what happens at the Gary Owen and the Orange Grove on game day the are overflowing with Wests Tigers fans. It has as much chance of being successful as any leagues club in Sydney and the directors of WestsAshfield would no doubt be better at recognising that than most.

Well with the news of Gladys cleaning up yesterday it seems there is going to be one very large hole in the ground for many many years , as I posted earlier Balmain obviously know they can not furnish the debt moving forward and the West Group has moved in , the talk of a club being built seems to of come from that greenie ratbag that talks the talk then hides under rocks . At least the Balmain jrs still have a large organisation looking after them .

Yup. The thing is that the Liberals stick to their plans too, not like Labor who would have a hope of abandoning it.

This was incredibly wrong of Darcy to bring it to media attention. Ashfield we're clearly not over the line yet and it reeks of politics more than anything. Darcy does try hard, but he needs to get rid of the showboating. Unless the Inner West council are tipping money in, Ashfield deserves the glory here, not him.

I wouldn't expect this to get going for a while.

Well that's a load of crap, and the sort of thinking which got Balmain into this mess in the first place. Because a pub or two have a few fans no matchday means the club could be profitable 24x7?
Fans alone are not enough to keep a leagues club profitable. Look at every other team's leagues club. Can't say i've been to them all but Bulldogs, Panthers, Souths are family oriented dining complexes. There's only 3 tvs at Bulldogs that have sport on in one small corner. That's because they know that's not where the regular clientele and associated profits are…

With soon to be 2 massive casinos within a couple of kms (an issue no other leagues club faces) simply offering pokies isn't a drawcard.
