Balmain Leagues Club Redevelopment Wins Approval

The former Balmain Leagues club site in Rozelle will get a new lease on life after being granted approval for a 28,000sq m mixed-use development from the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel.

Heworth Holdings Group is behind the $135 million re-development, located on the corner of Victoria Road and Darling Street, which has been abandoned since 2010 and long been known as the dilapidated Rozelle development site in Sydney’s inner-west.

Backed by Malaysian giant Mulpha, Heworth initially lodged plans for the project’s development—comprising three towers—in 2018, after securing the site for $75 million.

The approval includes 167 apartments, commercial space, a new public town square, a community arts studio, retail and the new Tigers Leagues Club to be built on the lower levels of the complex.

The green light will officially see the Tigers return to their Rozelle home.

Heworth’s head of property Christopher Walsh says the Scott Carver designed project has an end value of $400 million when all is said and done.

Putting delays on the project’s process, the NSW government had previously said it would compulsorily acquire the site for the construction of the Western Harbour Tunnel.

The development approval follows the impending amalgamation of Western Suburbs Leagues Club (Wests Ashfield) and Balmain Leagues Club, which went into voluntary administration in 2018.

“It’s the first step in bringing the Balmain Club back to its home at Rozelle and is a truly historical moment in ensuring the continuation of grassroots rugby league in the area,” Wests Ashfield chief executive Simon Cook said.

“Our amalgamation and the subsequent development approval means we can secure the financial viability of Balmain Tigers and ensure the survival of the foundation club at both NSWRL and NRL levels.”

Title should be Wests Tigers leagues club gets development approval. If it ever gets built it will be a Wests Tigers branded club owned by Wests Ashfield.

It will be Balmain Leagues Club ... and rightly so.

No it won’t, sorry but that club is at Flemington.

Where did you hear that? All the information at the time of Wests Ashfield taking over Balmain Leagues was that the new club would be Wests Tigers branded. I will be disappointed if it has Balmain branding.

To Darcy Byrne and the people of the "So called Rozelle village."

What you are getting here is what you sowed - you screwed the Balmain Leagues Club dry until they went out of business. You kept knocking back the plans submitted for years and now you are going to get a "Car mine."

It could have been so much better for all of us, a little tweeking here and there, serious discussion on a 50/50 plan for all concerned - all the developers got was No! No! No!

I for one am very glad that Karma if it happens is still alive and well, a great monstosity of a hole, smoke stacks and a horrid ugly intersection at Victoria Rd / Darling St.

Hope the people of Rozelle Village enjoy their new environment. Thanks Darcy, thanks Benny.

Well said mate. I actually used to live in Rozelle and dispised this side of the community. Just no, no, no without any thoughts into the consequences of those actions. Darcy would use the media to try to public berate the developers, which is a horrible tactic if you want to win them over to your way of thinking.

Darcy is a decent guy I believe and he cares about his community, but he isn't pragmatic in the way he goes about things.

Let's not forget it was his party that started this whole chain reaction with on-again / off-again metro project. If Darcy wants to point the finger, take on his colleagues in Labor.

They took a risk to get something more befitting to their liking and now they're complaining about the consequences from their negativity and indecision.

it will be Wests Tigers Leagues Club
but
it will have a great big balmain tiger badge at the door or enterance something like that

Doubt it. It will be Wests Tigers branded. Hopefully they have a section set aside to display the Balmain foundation club memorabilia but the club itself will be Wests Tigers branded.

Like Wests Campbletown is a magpie feel a out it.
This will be great with three genuine clubs

If only it had the magnetic horse racing machine to have a punt on.... those were the days

My mates and I reminisce about the horse racing machine, almost as big of a loss as the leagues club itself.

You are stuck in the past. It’s over, it will be Wests Tigers as it should.

Anyone who thinks this will be a Balmain Leagues club doesn’t understand who the owners are. Unless you are a board member of Wests Ashfield, and I am definitely not, you will not have a say on how the club is branded. That’s why I am saying if it ever gets built it will be Wests Tigers because that is how the board of Wests Ashfield see the future of the site.

as long as there's somewhere to have a beer and a feed with my family after a game where the money goes back to the footy club, in some way, then I'm happy.

I miss the old Balmain leagues club days.....but that's in the distant past....

Don't care if it's branded as Balmain or Wests Tigers. It's still the Tigers. This is the future, there'll be old Balmain honour rolls and the like there to pay respects to the past.

Most of the old Balmain folk with ties to the old leagues club are either at Rookwood or moved out of the area. One thing for certain I would rather have Wests Ashfield running the show than the Old Balmain crowd, they have a history of success in the club business, granted blessed with a large population that love a flutter on the bandits.
As for the emblem, if they are funding and running the show they can use any emblem they want...it makes stuff all difference to 99% of people who will be walking through the door

Its funny about the emblem - just go with the WT logo - thats what the NRL and other supporters see is WT. The funny part is the magpie on Wests Ashfield is nothing like the magpie that adorned Wests jerseys.

See the tigers sites at Rozelle has approval for Hearth Holdings Group development backed by Malaysian Group Murphy.
167 apartments, public town square, community arts studio retail and a new Tigers leagues club to be built on the lower levels of the complex
Interesting Wests Ashfield CEO Simon Cook indicates its the first steps in bringing the Balmain club back to its home at Rozelle.
On the specs it looks like it will be branded Tigers Leagues club not Wests Tigers
