I drove past the site today and there is signage up all over the place saying Balmain Leagues is returning and this Web address plastered everywhere.

https://www.balmainleagues.com/

Seems it will be Balmain branded and not Wests Tigers which I find a little disappointing.

I find that extremely disappointing. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Yep

Mind you the link goes to the developers website which has nothing to do with the Wests Tigers or Wests Ashfield.

The link goes to the site for the development that is set up by the developer. It almost looks like the entire project is being called Balmain Leagues

The Rozelle and Balmain peninsula is an extremely different part of the world these days. Wests Tigers Leagues would be shunned. Balmain Leagues will fit that demographic much better.

Seems to me WA understand their market.

I agree a feeling of Retro Nostalgia will certainly suit the rosella/ Balmain demographic. Thoughts @balmain-boy

No it wouldn't. The majority of the demographic in the area now would even know what Rugby League was.

No, but they love trendy establishments.
If it’s done the right way it could be just that.

No but they know the value of nostalgia and a rose coloured image of the past. Its everywhere in Balmain, from the old power station, the morts bay precinct, the old pubs at the bottom of the hill. Balmain is dripping in glamorised imagery of the old days and the place thrives on it. My family are old school Balmain (Dads photo is still in the foyer of Balmain PCYC) and it is that image (not reality) that the value of Balmain is chained to.

You are not going to build a business in this area on nostalgia. If you do it will go the same way as the old club, down the tube, if that is what they are relying on. Nostalgia will not save you against the two casinos that will be close by.

By the way the Power Station should be bulldozed, it does nothing. By all means do a virtual reality render to capture the era before the bulldozers move in, but practicality it's dead and a huge waste of space.

The power station will eventually be redeveloped into residential but I expect it will be sensitively developed in a similar vein to much of Southern Sydney. Lots to works with in that area.

Maybe. But I have a massive fear that it will be done very poorly. Would you keep the smoke stacks? If not its kinda like what is the point.

I would keep the smoke stacks and there are plenty of architectural examples fo this done well, Sydney Park for one.

I am biased, my grandfather worked there, I would be upset to see it levelled, I think it has potential.

In the day I really liked to power station. It saved NSW on a number of occasions when power supply was looking like maxing out by providing just enough additional power to get us through a number of crisis. But it has been left, derelict now, a shell of its former glory. Not sure it is salvageable in any shape. As residential, dunno. Me personally I would like the area to be open space, but that's just me.

Most people forget there was actually a second Balmain Power Station(that my grandfather also worked at) at the western end near the Iron Cove bridge, that was bought by Australand that is now known as Balmain Shores. A large part of that is now public open space.

This whole idea about people in the Balmain area not knowing anything about Rugby League does my head in. I live in a suburb that borders Balmain and can assure you that the NRL is well supported in the area by young and old. The reverse snobbery is getting a little dull and the old latte drinking reference is way off because breweys are the go in the inner west these days.

I live is a similar suburb and go to Balmain regularly. It has nothing to do with snobbery, it is an observation and option after speaking and interacting with many locals.

What's a brewery?
Yuppy pub?

I agree that RL fits into the ***aesthetic*** of Balmain now, but I was designing a marketing poster to sell to modern day Balmain, it would be a late 60's to early 80's Balmain. Nothing to do with success, just a romantic nostalgia in the area,

No more than any other area. You will always find a percentage of any area that doesn't follow NRL

No it wouldn't. The majority of the demographic in the area now would even know what Rugby League was.

No money in it for the government to make it open space - once Baird popped his head up God knows what they could do - he's for levelling it to start with but what the hell he's got to do with it I don't know.
