Benchmark set for Todd Payten's men
A premiership medal and the birth of his third child has made 2012 a remarkable year for Todd Payten.
In his debut season as a coach, the 2005 premiership winning prop led Wests Tigers to their first NYC title.
A few weeks later, Payten’s wife, Julie, gave birth to the couple’s third child, a beautiful little girl named Indiana. The Paytens already have two little boys.
Although Payten has had plenty to smile about, he wasted little time in getting straight back to business when he addressed his new squad for the first time at Camp Concord recently.
"The benchmark has been set and its up to you guys as a group to defend the title,'' Payten said.
"The hunter has become the hunted."
Fortunately for Payten, he will again have the services of this year’s players Kurtis Rowe, David Nofoaluma, Bradley Soe, Brendan Santi, Andrew Vela, Shane Lalogafau, Kyle Lovett, Nathan Brown, Matt Mulcahy, Manania Rudolph, Andy Fiagatusa, Jarrod Szczudlo, Luke Williams, Nofoa Leapai, and James Luff.
Rowe, Nofoaluma, Santi, Lovett, Brown and Mulchay played in the premiership winning grand final team.
Unfortunately, Jacob Miller, Mosese Fotuiaka, Matt Groat, Sauaso Sue, Inno Inosesio, Joel Luani, Brodie Monroe, Sitaleki Akauola, Soni Paasi, and Asipeli Fine are now ineligible for the U20s and will push for selection in either the Wests Tigers NRL side or the new Wests Tigers NSW Cup team.
NYC Premiership winning hooker Ben Saunders has put his league career on hold to focus on his work/studies next season.
Balmain SG Ball premiership winning squad members Paul Simona, Luke Brooks, Mitchell Moses, Manaia Cherrington, Daniel Rakvin, Leva Li, Max Dimarco and Mason Farrell are in Payten’s 2013 squad.
Moses, Brooks and Cherrington, are training with the Wests Tigers NRL squad till Christmas before returning to Payten.
