Benji appreciation

He was using the exact same language as Potter in that video what are you on about? It's not as if he was saying "I'm better than Brooks" ever potter avoided saying "Brooks was fantastic"

im not in denial about anything. i dont confess to knowing the marketing value marshall has brought to the club, and it is a moot point to say that without him at the club the tigers would or would not be financially better off.

you said he has had a large positive effect on the finances of the club, so how do you quantify that? and what are you basing this off?

either the club is doing well financially or not…

im not going to get into a whole debate over this, but i think it is an indictment that for so much of his career people have had to use fallbacks such as "would channel 9 have put the tigers on tv without him?" because he simply hasnt given anyone defending him the backup of actually being good at what he is paid so well for: playing rugby league.

He is in poor form, I am not saying he is playing well. I have made that point a lot. So, I am not trying to defend his form or pretend as if he has been good for us this year because of marketing and financial reasons. I am talking about his overall career, and suggesting that he is in poor form at the moment, not intentionally trying to sabotage the club with a lack of effort.

I have anecdotal evidence only to prove he has been good for the club financially: ask kids who they know from the tigers, look at whose number appears on the back of people's jerseys, consider why media outlets pay Marshall to write and appear on their channels…all these things suggest marketing appeal, and this would doubtlessly be positive for the club he plays for...but, feel free to disagree on that point.

My argument is that Benji has been good for the club because he was a great player and was good for the club financially. I think those things are just beyond doubt, but I'm not defending him by saying, 'forget his form, he brings the club money'. I'm saying, lay off him because, despite his poor form over the last two years, he has been a very good player and one that has given a lot to the club (financially and media recognition wise). The second point was secondary to the argument, not the reason why I think we are being overly critical of him.

The saying "How quickly we forget" is unfortunately true of human nature and it is currently being practised by some WT fans. These are the same fans that cheered and carried on when Benji was at his brilliant best and the player who was instrumental in winning us our first premiership - something that a number of clubs in this competition have never achieved in their lifetime.

i hope you dont classify me in this category?! i have only ever criticised him as a rugby league player.

Fair enough, the comment was certainly not directed at you.

I dont care what anyone thinks, Benji has made this team actually entertaining to watch ever since he started playing for us despite the last 2 seasons.

It has been so good going for an entertaining and usually successful team then a boring Melbourne side as an example…

He is heavily hated on here but, please remember all the good things he has done for this club..

If this was the same time last year and you were making this post I would probably agree with you and say it is unfair to criticise him after all he has brought to this club, but after the way he has behaved and carried on this year I actually found myself saying 'who cares' when a friend would bring up a 'Benji leaving the Tigers' conversation. He has conducted himself poorly in a professional manner this year and in turn has caused me to lose all respect for him and, personally, it will be hard to salute him on good terms.

I have always liked Benji since he debuted back in 03 but this year I have become bitter and cynical towards the club and especially Benji with the way things have been done. Needless to say I have stayed loyal to the club and I do believe we can see a light at the end of a very long tunnel, so hears to reaching the end.
Salutations Benji, thankyou for some things.

Headed out Friday trying to drum up memories of what he was to properly show respect to him heading off from his last home game and his 200th.

I will get there I am sure

i guess you can see the evidence in the tigers jerseys with 6 on the back, etc. and so i cant sit here and say otherwise.
i am sure marshall has done a lot for the club off field, and i am certainly not criticising him as a person as i have no right to whatsoever.

quite honestly you would know more about his off field value to the club and so i will knock over my king…

what i do say about marshall is

a) over the years his exciting play has in large been an unpredictable, error riddled style that in the long run cost the tigers a lot of in game momentum, and ergo games. he was so infatuated with the no look pass, the chip kick no one knew would come, the hot potato pass so he didnt get tackled, the quick penalty tap for himself to try yet again a play that worked once...ever!
in 2010 and 2011 he changed all this and i really liked the way he played. i thought he had turned the corner and was happy to say so. the proof was in how the tigers went those years.
on saturday (in the centres of all places?!) he was very unselfish and didnt try all his little tricks and it showed by both him and the team benefitting. i just wish he could have played like that all the time.

b) he has been rubbish the last 2 years, particularly this season, because he has become once again too self centred in his playing style and again the mistakes are omnipresent. granted, the last 2 seasons the club has had a terrible run with injury.
this season has been the first i have really disliked his attitude towards the club. he has been arrogant, disrespectful and nearing belligerent at times. he really needs someone to help him pull his head in and teach him the virtues of humility. again, the proof of this can be seen in places like here.

its a shame, but he has pretty much undone all the good work he did.

how the tide of opinion has turned this last year; that doesnt happen with loyal fans like those on this forum without good reason.

this whole benji saga has sadly ended like a good relationship gone sour. it reminds me of an ex i had who after we broke up still had to live with me for a short time and turned into a super b1tch during it!!
just like her then, i am looking forward to just being shot of marshall.

Few on here have been as hard on Marshall over the years as I have but my hat is off to the bloke. He is the greatest magician rugby league has ever seen. I will be tearing up on Grand Final day when he marches out with the retirees and they show the flick pass, and the light stepping vs. the Sharks. So many highlights.

Benji is only human. Benji gave me what Raudonikis, Boyd, Dallas, Masters could never do thanks to Greg Hartley, or Maggies with Summons, Kelly & co.in the 60's with Darcy Lawler.

I remember as a kid pledging to myself that i wont be too greedy & before i die that i just want to feel what it feels like when your team wins the comp. All i ever wanted was 1 comp.
Benji delivered that dream.
Benji is still a kid. A rich kid.
Tauber should of known better.
Thank you Benji Marshall. You changed all our lives for the better & you put our club on the map.
I wont remember the bad things Benji - just the good ones.
Come back to us one day a man.
See you on the flip side brother.
Thank you again for 2005\. I remember it like yesterday.
I can go to Rookwood Cemetery in peace now.

Yet when he loses form, just like any footballer is prone to do, there is all this hate against him. O.K. so 2013 is a write off but please think of the joy he has brought to you and other fans and the voluntary work which he has carried out unnoticed.

With regards to the Blues video I firmly believe that he was pressured into it by the Auckland club. No video no contract. By the way most you criticising Benji have now change your stance on SBW and now think he is a genius irrespective of what he did to rugby league years ago.

I agree with Watersider and Newtown on this one. Everyone loves a winner but when things turn pear shaped, they soon drop off and become bitter and twisted !!! That is probably the definition of a bandwagoner …..... get on for the ride when the goings good and put the knife in when it aint. As paying customers of the club, of course they have the right to do this but others also have the right to disagree.

Okay, I have just seen a short interview with Marshall on foxsports news and want to use this opportunity to give him kudos.
He was polite, humble and gracious. THAT is what we like.
I know all I see is what is on the screen, and I didn't know he has a foundation for kids with cancer: anyone who does that is pretty damn good person in my view.
For me this short chat went a long way towards easing up on the guy.

Although I see players as only players (in order to have objectivity and to not judge them on a personal level which I don't feel is right), sometimes who they are off the field is very important and I acknowledge this.

Just saw it too - thought it was a fantastic interview. He was really nice, especially in talking up the people around him & the invest that have supported him

I think the main thing is consistency. If you have been a long time critic you seem like a band wagoner when the consensus comes to feel similarly.

Personally, I have always been quite harsh in my assessment of his playing form and idiosyncrasies when I honestly believed it.

As I have said many times, I thought he was awesome in 2010 and 11 and so I said.

For me it's not about getting caught up in anything, it is maintaining a sense of reason and pragmatism. In other words, calling a spade a spade.

 yeh it was good hey?

He knew things weren't working for him and his form was down. Least he showed the balls to leave for less money to get his form back. Most talented player I've seen, too bad it burnt out quicker than I'd hoped but will always respect you mate!
