Benji Contract Upgrade

WESTS Tigers have declined to offer Benji Marshall an extension as part of the star playmaker's new contract package, but are in negotiations to secure their two most promising young halves to long-term deals.

The Marshall imbroglio came to a head just after 6pm last night, when acting Tigers boss Grant Mayer sent the player's agent, Martin Tauber, terms of the contractual upgrade that was verbally promised almost three years ago.

The news is just one of a number of significant developments at Concord, which include:

* REVELATIONS that Tauber has tested interest in Marshall with rival NRL outfits Canterbury and New Zealand, as well as Super 15 franchise NSW;

* MOVES from the Tigers to sign boom teenage halves Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses until the end of 2017\. Both are already contracted for next year;

* THE club receiving an offer to settle with sacked coach Tim Sheens, who has remained on the monthly payroll since his departure last September;

* ENGAGING the recruitment company the Bulldogs used to appoint a new CEO in the wake of Steve Humphreys' exit last Friday;

* THE formation of a new retention and recruitment committee, with veteran talent spotter Warren McDonnell demoted to dealing with players outside the Top 25 following a series of debatable decisions in recent years; and*

REVELATIONS they are still carrying ex-players Andrew Fifita, Bryce Gibbs, Todd Payten, Chris Heighington and Wade McKinnon on their 2013 salary cap.

Marshall's future, however, is the most pressing item of business at the club.

When he re-committed for a further five years in 2010, Humphreys gave a verbal promise to renegotiate the contract in tandem with the NRL's new broadcast deal. Tauber also indicated that he anticipated an extension until the end of 2017.

But the terms forwarded to him yesterday did not feature an extension, only more money between now and 2015\. It's understood Marshall's base salary - believed to be around $500,000 a season - will increase slightly this year, before enjoying more substantial rises in 2014 and 2015.

If the 28-year-old is not satisfied there's every chance he could ask for a release - and the mood among some Tigers officials indicates he would be granted one.

Marshall had a falling out with coach Mick Potter upon being axed to the bench in round 10, and has not achieved the same "father-son" relationship he previously enjoyed with Sheens.

Marshall yesterday reaffirmed his desire to remain a one-club player, but shed no light on his feelings over the contractual negotiations.

"At the end of the day I'd love to be here for life, and if the club sees it that way I'm sure I will be," he said.

The Daily Telegraph can also reveal that the Tigers are yet to pay Sheens this month, with recent legal negotiations suggesting a settlement could be reached soon. A board meeting next week will digest an offer put forward to the club by Sheens' solicitors.

On the plus side, Mayer confirmed negotiations to secure Brooks and Moses on new three-year deals had begun.

"We see them as great young talents and they are both priority signings for us," he said.

Both teenagers are managed by Isaac Moses, who also handles out-of-sorts forward Adam Blair. The Tigers have indicated they would be willing to contribute around $100,000 to Blair's contract at a rival club, should he attract an offer from elsewhere.

interesting but good to see Brooks and Moses being signed up early and on long deals. with them both secured the club, from this article, looks like it doesn't want to offer Benji much more then he is already on which is the right thing to do because he is just playing bad footy at the moment. Which may mean he could leave considering he apparently wanted 1 million a few weeks ago

Haha beat me to it tigertilidie. Good to see brooks and Moses getting the long term deal guess its why they ain't giving Benji the extension.

The key factor in the DT article is the impending signing of Brooks and Moses until 2017\. We've still got Benji for another couple of years and hopefully he can regain some of his lost form in that time.

Marshall keen to tackle poor form rather than his future

As Benji Marshall's management waited for a revised offer from Wests Tigers, the five-eighth insisted he was trying to focus on his form rather than his clouded future.

Marshall and the Tigers will try to turn around their season on Saturday night against Canberra at Campbelltown Stadium while his future at the club remains up in the air. Having met with Marshall's manager, Martin Tauber, on Thursday, Tigers chief operating officer Grant Mayer is due to put forward a revised offer on a contract upgrade.

That didn't eventuate on Friday. Yet with Marshall linked to a possible switch to rugby union, the player insisted his contract negotiations were ''the furthest thing from my mind at the moment''.

''My priority is to try and play good for the team and that's my focus,'' Marshall said. ''So my manager can take care of that side and I'll just worry about playing.''

Asked about the links with rugby union, Marshall said: ''You guys know more than me. That's not my focus. That's why you have a manager to do that stuff. At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure the club is trying to do something to renegotiate my contract, but this week is a big game for us and I've just been focusing on that.

''After the game I'm sure I will be able to sit down and talk about what's happening in the future, but for now it's about this game. I'd love to be here for life and if the club sees it that way, I'm sure I will be.''

Marshall, captaining the Tigers in Robbie Farah's absence, admitted he had not been happy with his form of late. He missed nine tackles in the Tigers' 32-12 loss to Brisbane last Monday night.

''It's a bit patchy lately, a bit up and down,'' he said. ''I'd like to be playing better, there's no doubt about that. No one likes to be embarrassed in defence and your ego takes a hit a little bit.

''You just have to go back to the drawing board and work hard. In terms of happiness, I love the club. I've been here for my whole career and I've got a lot of mates here.'' Marshall maintained that criticism of his form would spur him on. ''You just get used to it but it doesn't affect the way I play. If anything it makes you want to play better,'' he said.

While the Tigers have had significant injury problems this season, the Raiders will be missing significant talent, not least Blake Ferguson, Edrick Lee and Josh Papalii.

''It is going to come down to who runs harder and who tackles harder,'' Marshall said. ''Hopefully that's us.''

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy says the signs are good that his team won't be tripped up by State of Origin commitments this season. The Storm play the Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Park on Monday night without Origin guns Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Ryan Hoffman.

It is a problem that tests the Storm each year - with mixed results. Bellamy admits there is no magic bullet but he says some tinkering has been done at training this week, and the signs have been promising.''These guys have trained really well, with energy and enthusiasm. If you can do that at training, signs of that usually end up on the field,'' he said.

I will be at the game tonight and as far as Benji is concerned I will be keen to see these things amongst others;

- commitment in his own defence especially one on one
- kicks in general play that gain good field position not picking out a catcher on the full and pinning the Raiders in their own 30 metres or better
- when given the ball to kick for touch from a penalty concentrate to gain maximum metres so the team doesn't have to use a few tackles to make the distance that could have been made via the kick, unless a play is involved
- take the line on himself every now and then when he has the ball
- concentrate when kicking for goal every 2 points count
- inspire his team mates through his own efforts

Geez some of you have issues. He said exactly what he should have said and you still find fault.

His form isn't good enough but he definitely isn't shirking anything at all. He speaks well.

I have defended his speaking on behalf of the team…. I am more taking to task the crew who constantly bleat the "behind the dominant forward pack".

I've seen plenty of players play great footy in crap teams. Our pack might have to do a lot better but they are not to blame for Benji's poor options and missed tackles.

At the same time he represents himself and the club well.

Benji can show us what he can do on the football field. Let his action speak the loudest.

He did tonight.

Average.

I've had a further think about Benji's situation lately. To be honest the club has to go into these negotiations believing it will re-sign Benji to an extension. The key is in the dollars offered. If Benji truly wants to stay and the club truly wants to stay then I believe they can meet half way. Third party agreements should probably ensure Benji is looked after financially without hurting our cap situation too much.

This past week I've been taking into account the fact that Benji has been playing injured and now the revelation that he needs surgery on his toe. It's so obviously a factor in a player who's assets include running the football. Further more though I've drawn the conclusion that it would be wrong to simply let go a player with the reputation and quality of Benji. A champion player never loses his mojo for good. Phil Gould summed it up well a while back when he said Benji just needs time to figure out who he is as a player now. He's not the 21 year old care free 5/8 anymore. He's evolved without so much of a thought towards it. Now's he's trying to come to terms with it.

To sum it. I've listened to Benji these past 6 weeks. He's not panicking. He speaks a lot of sense. He has a lot of pride for the club. I think he's finally back on the path again. I truly believe his form will continue to pick up over the rest of this season and I would expect him to receive an extension before season's end. I just hope it doesn't affect our ability to hold on to our young bucks.
