Benji delivers on promise

ON THE final morning Benji Marshall spent with his foster father, Mick Doherty, he spoke of wanting to help those who couldn't help themselves. His dad told him to start then and there. ''It was a dying man's wish,'' Marshall said. ''What was I to say?''

While sporting talent blessed his family, cancer also cursed it. He lost the man he called Dad to it just days later, adding to a list that includes his grandmother and two aunties.

''Cancer is rife within my family, especially in the women,'' the five-eighth said. ''Any sort of cancer, it's very hard to take the news, but when it's kids, it touches you a lot more. I meet these kids for the first time and I feel the pain.''

Marshall thus lent his name to the Benji Marshall Foundation, which helped raise, through the Footy Rocks dinner of early this year, $250,000 for the Children's Cancer Institute of Australia.

Yesterday, Marshall got to see the fruits of some of his fund-raising: an $800,000 research machine in the Institute's laboratory at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre, at the University of NSW.

''Seeing it first-hand reinforces why I want to be a part of it - to try and help,'' Marshall said.

It has a lot to do with football. It shows how one of our senior players is using his personal tragedy to try and help defeat a deadly disease. Yes, this story takes away from the ability to bag the team, coaches and the club but it shows how a player with Benji's profile can bring a lot of good in a tragic situation.

Sorry Rambo2714 but your soulless request will be let through to the keeper this time.

It's showing that one of our senior players is using his fame for the right reasons and promoting awareness and helping raise money to help defeat a disease that will ensure young children live long and prosperous lives instead of being buried before they reach adolescence.

Classy mate. Real classy.

Yeah CB almost as bad as posting a fake score on a live score thread in the NYC game on Saturday like Rambo did . Hope MODs look into that also . Bad form Rambo

I thought it was all part of being a role model setting the right tone etc?

If you don't like charitable, community focused clubs go join the roosters or something…
