Quite annoyed that people think Benji made a mistake in being out after 3am. I thouggt we lived in a free society where people can come and go as they please.

Putting blame on Benji suggests these idiots dont deserve the blame.

I hope this guys gets his just deserts and his name is published in the media.

You've got me wrong, i'm not blaming him for defending himself but players these days are well aware of the situations they can get themselves in when out at these times. If i'm not mistaken Benji has been in this situation before as have many other players and they know that being out at that hour is not on anymore.
Your deluded if you think we live in a free society and in a perfect world yes anyone should feel safe to go out and enjoy themselves at whatever hour you want but unfortunately we all know that isn't the case, and it doesn't matter what city or town you visit if your out at 3am on a weekend then your very likely to find yourself in the company of idiots behaving like idiots and quite possibly under the influence and looking for trouble or simply frustrated at whatever and looking to take that out on somebody or something.
What i'm saying is it's highly unlikely he would of got himself into this tangle if he was heading to the fruit shop on a tuesday arvo at 3pm to buy some bananas.
It's sad that these young men have to alter their social life once they become first grade rugby league players but they just have to find alternative ways to have a night out if they want to keep their name out of the headlines.

Common sense post…...there are things we dont do because we know its not wise, most sensible dont go walking down eveleigh st on their own late at night - most know thats not wise.
But Benji was in the city in a role as an ambassador for a childrens charity.....on duty so to speak.
The do was on a Fri evening in the city, not on a Tues arvo down near the local fruit shop.
He cant win....but I agree with Icon & red....Benji will come through this even more popular than before

btw people need to calm down I think

They are saying on fox sports that he has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm on foxsports. Very sad day for Benji and everyone who loves this club. Very worried this will disrupt our season.

But he is not speaking to police until tomorrow as far as many stories have been reporting They can't charge him until the speak to him or get his story sounds like fox is speaking bs

I feel the club would need to seriously look at the evidence and make a decision. Being charged is a long way away from being guilty, but you would have to imagine there is reasonable evidence of guilt for him to be charged…

NRL star Benji Marshall has been charged with assault over a fight in Sydney's CBD in the early hours of Saturday morning.
\
\
Witnesses say the Wests Tigers captain went to North Sydney Police Station around 2:00pm on Sunday and an hour later the club's chief executive Stephen Humphries confirmed the charges against the 26-year-old.
\
\
\
Marshall, accompanied by two men, then left the station and sped off in a car without addressing the media.
\
\
\
It is alleged he and another man struck a 24-year-old man in the face during a fight outside a Sydney fast food outlet in The Rocks.
\
\
\
It is believed the fight broke out after Marshall received racial taunts from a group of men.
\
\
Mr Humphries says Marshall, who just this week was unveiled as the face of the NRL for season 2011, will now discuss the issue with his lawyers.

The only evidence they need to press charges is the protagonist seeking charges & Benji admitting to striking him (which he did yesterday via Tauber)!!

That does not alter the fact that provocation will be argued in court and that he will not receive a conviction on his record even if he were to plead guilty given the mitigating circumstances!!

I still feel that he is unlikely to be committed to trial!

Dave Trodden will make sure he is well represented!!

He will only get stood down for a week if the club thinks he is not mentally right for footy!

Well, the guy has gone in and made a complaint that he was assaulted, Benji has admitted it, I don't know if extenuating circumstances will come into play here. It would be fairly obvious this guy baited Benji, but there would be a lot more to this story obviously. Like how many people were involved for starters, who was with Benji at the time etc.

What precedents have their been with people being charged and still playing? Laffranchi, Bird, Stewart?

Looks like I might be donating cash. Hope others can help!

Even if it can't help I'll give to the cancer charity in his honour

Never a truer sentence ever posted here. David Trodden is the best person to have on your side.

Benji will play against the bulldogs I have no doubts, the Tigers won't let the NRL stand him down. He will probably have a blinder, I will back him in the man of the match market.

I'm sure Benji will be found **not guilty** as he was provoked…bear in mind there are racial vilification laws here at play....I hope Benji takes civil action against this moron and sues his pants off for defamation!

If he is stood down by the NRL they will be receiving a very angry correspondence from me and I urge every Tiger supporter to do like wise. Benji has earned everyones respect and for anyone to even begin to think he is guilty of anything other than standing up for himself in my eyes is not a fan of this club.
The only good thing about going to court is that the gutless (I can't say anything that's not a swear word) will be named and we will see who is accusing him.
I feel sick that someone like this to big note himself in front of his mates could potentially destroy someones reputation. Benji has done so much for our club and the NRL he deserves the benefit of the doubt from EVERYONE in the game.
