Benji Marshall: 'one game at a time'
Benji Marshall isn’t fazed over how congested the Telstra Premiership ladder is.
With seven matches remaining before the finals, Wests Tigers sit in eighth place on 22 points with a for and against record of +4.
Two points behind are last year’s grand finalists in the Warriors (+30) and St George Illawarra (-36). Such is the tightness of the ladder that Wests Tigers remain just two wins out of the top four.
Marshall knows too well the Wests Tigers destiny is in their own hands. The team got their campaign back on track with a win over Penrith last Saturday night to end a three game losing streak. Prior to that, Wests Tigers won seven straight games.
“It is important to start winning. I haven’t really looked at the table because Sheensy encourages us not to,’’ a relaxed Marshall said.
“We have just got to take it one game at a time. I know it is an old saying and everyone always says it but its true.
“This week it starts with the Cowboys and we will worry about whoever after that.
“I reckon there are probably a good 12 teams who can win it (the premiership). Anyone who makes the top 8 can win it.
“I think Souths are pretty exciting. I like the way they are looking and the Bulldogs really appeal at the moment too.”
Marshall admitted the win over Penrith was ‘not the perfect game’ leading into the clash against the sixth placed Cowboys at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Monday night.
The Kiwi Test captain says the team must stick to its game plan to shut down Cowboys five-eighth Johnathan Thurston. Wests Tigers have been boosted by the return from a foot injury of international second-rower Gareth Ellis, resulting in Adam Blair moving to prop.
“If all goes according to game plan, it will pay dividends for us. They are flying. Their win (over Melbourne) on the weekend was pretty good.”
