Benji Marshall will leave Dragons if another NRL club meets his asking price

It's one of those things, do I think he is a better player than some in our top 17? Absolutely, but where would you play him? His not consistent enough for the spine, not a good enough defender for the centres and not proven under the high ball for the wing. He doesn't have the body shape for the forwards or back row. Which means he could only be used as a utility bench player to provide spark in attack.

So two questions remain. Are we a team that's able to carry this sort of player on the bench and is Marshall going to accept the wage applicable to these sorts of players.

In my opinion the answer to both of those would be no.
 
We dodged a bullet when he chose to give Rugby a try. It would be a massive step backwards to have him back now. The only reason would be for experience in the halves and he has proven time and time again that he cannot control a game or get repeat sets.

That didn't score a point in the second 40 against a Warriors State Cup side..Col…why would we sign a player in decline...

I'm a Marshall fan but at this stage of his career I can't see any value he would bring apart from baggage...the Club has moved on.....
 
What happens if no clubs, including Dragons meets his asking price.
Will he realise its time to hang up his boots for a final time.
 
We all loved Benji for what he did and gave but for him to want that sort of money is ridiculous,the club needs desperately a dominate forward and centre ,looking at him play at present he is a shadow of his former self no thanks pass on this one .

I would not take him for free. Great player in his day and may have the odd good game still left in him, but we need players in our spine that are going to deliver at least three games a month
 
I don't think Benji is as bad as some of you are making out.

He came equal 2nd in the Dally M's last year almost purely on the back of his game management. He proved last year he can kick and stick to the basics well. No flash whatsoever. And $350k is really not much for an experienced half, given the increased salary cap.

With that said, I still probably wouldn't sign him.

I reckon Benji has been our best player. Tedesco will probably beat him but at this point I can't knock the guy.

The question becomes is it worth retaining him for a season or two. I'm not sure that it is although he is probably playing better than both our halves.

After all this time of developing our current halves, paying them big dollars to stay and sticking with them through their poor form, it would be utter madness to shift one and have Marshall come in and teach them how to throw the ball out into the grandstand, take risks at crucial points, run sideways and not close a game out. The mind boggles.
He was great for a while, but that was a long while ago. And it was when hhis style worked. It doesn't work now.

I wouldn't be punting either of our halves now. Benji has little to no upside whereas both Brooks and Moses may turn into guns.
 
Benji should have a crack at SL. He wasn't much chop at Rugby , SL would be a better fit for him at this stage of his career. He still has something to offer there.
 
Can't see any value in going back to the future with Benji ESL is probably his best option although I heard him say when interviewed that he would rather stay in Sydney, what about Newcastle could be a possibility?
