Benji: The day I left Wests Tigers I wanted to return

"From the day I left I always wanted to come back."

With those words Benji Marshall took it into his own hands to ensure he finished his illustrious career at where it all began with the Wests Tigers.

Call it old school or a classic case of having unfinished business at a club which continues to call Marshall its prodigal son.

The timing was right. After four years playing in rival colours, the fan favourite is finally home.

"I didn't think there would be a realistic chance to get the opportunity to come back," Marshall said.

"I suppose if you want something you've got to go and make it yourself. I just thought you know what, I'll give Ivan [Cleary] a call and tell him what I could offer the club and to the team on the field."

Marshall's conversations with Cleary in the lead-up to his return have been well publicised.

The random coffee shop visits and phone calls to go with secret meetings and wearing different apparel to hide his identity in public.

The question for Cleary remained - was he convinced Marshall could deliver on what he was offering?

"He was in line with all the things I was thinking and it wasn't realistic until we spoke about it," Marshall said of Cleary.

"During that meeting we were obviously trying to get a feel for each other and judging from what I could tell he realised how hungry I was for success and to come back.

"After that meeting everything went well and I said sweet, we'll sign it. We didn't talk about money. We just both put it out on the table and after that conversation a week later I signed the deal."

The Wests Tigers have had more than 10 recruits who have come on board under Cleary in the space of 11 months.

Of the 30-man squad, Marshall has only played alongside Chris Lawrence, David Nofoaluma, Sauaso Sue and Luke Brooks.

Only the Warriors fanbase has endured the same five years waiting for the next finals appearance.

"I think the beauty of what we can do as a club is there's no set culture or way we have to be," Marshall said.

"What I am starting to see is a team that was shy come together and be very vocal. The awkwardness of being new and meeting people or being young is out of the way now. People are starting to step up.

"We set our own way and control what the next 10 years is going to look like for the club. We have a team that's going to do that."

Marshall's return to Leichhardt Oval, scheduled for round 10 against the North Queensland Cowboys, is set to come with a range of emotions.

In his three-year absence while playing at the Dragons and Broncos, he managed to avoid a game against the Wests Tigers at the venue.

"[I'm] 90 per cent chance of crying," Marshall admitted about his Leichhardt return.

"The older I've got, the more emotional I've got. Anything could happen. I've found myself crying at the weirdest stuff lately. I know walking back to Leichhardt to do some filming was pretty emotional as well and getting to watch my brother make his debut there last year.

"From the day I left I always wanted to come back. I just never had the opportunity or right people at the club to make that happen.

"The changing of the guard with Ivan coming on board and the direction changing, that was all I needed to work myself back into the club."

Don't know if Benji will/can make any difference to the season west's are heading in too but god its nice knowing hes back.

I'm not sure we have a strong enough bench to be able risk carrying Benji as the 17th man , especially with Elijah Taylor in the side able to fill the role of utility dummy half

My concern is Benji having to defend in the middle of the ruck and having to make 30+ tackles if McIllwrick or Liddle went down injured early in a match

Hope he's in the side that day. Would be awkward if he's picked in reserves.

I would bet good money he doesn't play one ISP game this year. He'll be named in the 21 man squad every week, and the weeks he doesn't play, he will drop off the bench an hour before kick off. I think the club has too much respect for him.

He will need the match fitness, no good him sitting in the grandstand eating hotdogs every weekend. He will play ISP at throughout the year, he showed at the Broncos that he was willing to swallow his ego and put in wholeheartedly for the feeder club.

Agree with you F to B - he'll have to play a few games of ISP to keep his fitness up.

Cant wait for round 10 at LO, it should be a cracker of an atmosphere shame its a Thursday night game and not a Sunday arvo

Is there a chance Benji could play centre? Not sure he could just focus on his running game without overplaying his hand as a playmaker.

Back to the future and have him defend on the wing. He probably isn't the first choice but it s a long season.

Center, YES. Wing, no way with MWZ, Fauna, Thompson, Kevie and Nofo around.
Center, 5/8, Half or Hooker.

With doubts over Brooks and his ability to lead the team, Reynolds and his injuries, Benji will get game time, most likely transition in to a coaching role next year.

Definitely don't want Benji as a hooker defensively, his arms would break off. He would be at his handiest as a utility, or starting half or 5/8 if Brooks or Reynolds are stinking it up early on in the season.

Geeez some of you blokes are heartless! I thought his Player Profile interview was great. He is obviously an intelligent guy who is capable of expressing himself well. He genuinely loves the Tigers, and when I look back at his stint at the club over the years, I think he deserves the respect and accolades of all Tigers fans.
The guy has been an absolute legend of the game and played a huge role in the way the game has changed. There was a time when every kid that watched the game wanted to be just like him - how many players can you say that about?
He is the first to admit that he didn't handle things well in the past, but I believe him when he says that people took his confidence as a sort of "cockyness". Now he comes across to me as a guy who is extremely comfortable in his own skin and is genuinely trying to achieve something for the club. I am glad he's back!

Not being heartless, just honest. He would struggle massively defensively at hooker. He is a club legend without doubt. His "cockiness" at wearing an Auckland Blues RU jersey while he was still playing for WT wasn't cockiness, it was arrogance IMO. Glad to have him back though, as long as he is just another player on the roster- no preferential treatment anymore.
