Benjis season ytd

coz he is a halfback and he is supposed to control the game like a halfback.
a halfback's role cannot be analysed just via stats… OR... he could just play 5/8 like most on here would want him to.

people have criticised benji's role and his defensive issues.. and the point that you raised, he is leading the comp in try assists yet we are 7th in the no. of points scored, shows the lack of ability of our other half to support benji.

This is a key point you raise. Lui and Benji worked well together, with Lui coming up with quite a few try assists and line break assists of his own last year. This year has seen a far greater reliance for Benji to come up with all the key plays. Successful at times as his stats show, but the over-reliance has also shown he cannot do it all on his own.

Stats are stats… I'm not making them up. You wanna decifer during origin?? We had 2 byes during that time as well

Sorry S G I'm not having a go at you or asking for a break down, just saying exactly what you stated first on your last post, Stats are stats. Hey I love Benji to. Love your work.

Glad this thread was started as was thinking the same myself. Benji has been great in a team suffering lots of injuries - Ellis has missed most of the season, Sironen has been injured most of the year, Farah has missed 5 games and been injured early in at least 2 , tedesco missed the wole season and even his replacement Moltzen has missed a few games so our spine has hurt all year and that means benji has been under more pressure but as per the stats he shows he has been in the top couple of halves in the comp

Take Benji out of this team and we are a bottom 3 team.

I love Benji, prob my favourite player, but I cant agree with this.

He has always been a big moment player, and has still produced those, but I think this year he has offered less in between,

People talking of dropping him are foolish.

Are most of you in denial??? Stop being so soft and admit the facts, Benji has played his worst attacking football this year who cares about stats blah blah blah he has gone backwards looks slower insecure and thinking of something else his defence has gone back to the old days, i havent seen such a elusive great player when he tries but i am being honest not living on his past reputation.

according to the original post he is second in TA's and line break assists.

scoring plays are the important ones and he has been involved in plenty, the people sticking the boot in are being harsh.

I think the Dally M points probably tell a story

4 Probable MOTM performances

A lot of sub standard performances

Therefore 12 points

The fact that Benji this season is still miles above 90% of his peers speaks for itself.
We never had such a dominant player, who can win a game practically by himself.
God speed Benji.

Go Tigers.

Benjis worst year by a long way. Has he even made a legitimate line break this year? I don't remember him in space (And if you go and get me NRL Stats and show me he actually has 10-15, then name them for me please).

If we wanna talk about stats then I bet Benji is also number 1 in kicking the ball dead and ask for the half who least runs at the line. Which is outrageous given running is his strength.

Its not his fault. He plays with a bunch of guys with limited talent who most people think are better than they are. Our back line is honestly useless. We laud a player like Ryan like he should be in origin, when really he is just the best of a bad bunch, and in all honesty a good safe player. Look at the Dragons game tonight, Morris scores two tries on the counter, if that ball goes to deck and any of our back 5 pick it up, not one of them goes the length of the field to score…they wouldn't even get close.

Back on topic. I like to compare Benji to Barba. To me Benji has more talent than Barba (who is still a freak). But of the two players one is playing like a champion, running the ball at the line, using his speed and footwork. The other is playing mediocre, standing there and passing to inside runners and then just kicking on the last. One is heavily influencing the games, while the other is just getting through them. Barba is lightyears a better player than Benji at the moment. Unfortunately for me, I always think for whatever reason, as good as he has been, we will never see the best of what Benji could of been, and he will always be someone who never achieved as much as he could of (And yes i know he's achieved a lot.)

Stats are always only going to give a limited view of a player, but no matter which way you cut it Benji's stats show he is a major factor in just about every point we have scored this year.

His shift to halfback as been understandably questioned, but he has shown that he has the goods.

I don't think the backline is useless but we must have the slowest backline in the NRL with an inconsistent (but potentially high quality) error prone fullback. To add to that our best outside back - Lawrence - has been out of form for most of the season.

I'd add that our backrowers have very little impact. Blair to me seems like he will never be a wide running dangerous runner of the footy. Ellis has been injured for most of the season. Heighington has been out of form and is better playing as a 3rd prop. Bell is basically a prop. BMM potentially is an option out wide but he hasn't done much all season. Fulton has been great and is an option for Benji to throw the ball too.

To me Benji has been poor this season but he hasn't had a lot of quality options for him to throw the ball too.

Show me Benji D stats ie missed tackles that lead to tries.like most have said benjis attacking skills are not his problem, but all good haves need a good forward pack that is dominating .
We went into the comp minus two props and we signed Cashmere, theres the reason for our teams failure as simple as that .

I reckon Benji has played injured since Ben Smith ran him down against the Eels he is playing like he needs a spell but we have left it far too late to do that

totally agree with this and anyone who disagrees does not understand the game we have been dominated and out wrestled in just about every game including the ones that we have won. Benji needs to hold some accountability but only as much as the rest of the squad for our performances this year.

I always thought benji would have made an excellent fullback a la brett hodgson, in 2005 he defended from the wing and he tormented the opposition bringing the ball back with all that extra space and he only had one thing to think about - running the ball, as a fullback he could also join the backline as a ballplayer or runner whenever he wanted to, without the burden of defence (after all these years he still has very little idea on how to tackle), but its all academic now, he is seen as an organiser (I think he is more of an opportunist) and although his natural talent is unquestionable, I think he has been played out of position for most of his NRL career, but I expect him to bounce back this weekend with much more involved game, mainly because if we lose this weekend, we are not going to make the eight, titans are going great guns with an easier draw than us and better percentage, we HAVE to win this weekend.

Rubbish. If it wasnt for our forwards this year we would be dead set last. Benji's game has been changed - that is the reason our attack has gone to crap.
