Benjamin Franklin's famous quote "Nothing is certain except death and taxes"...... and you can throw in there, "Weststigers Failure"
Right now I'm pondering, what monumental stuff ups are Tim Sheens and the WT board going to come up with next.
Their pending decisions on appointing a new head coach and better players have made me think....who is more important, a top notch coach like Bellamy or recruit players in the calibre of Munster and Tapine asap.
I thing it's a double edge sword because some elete players follow a good coach whilst others look at the roster & the $.
I'm sure your thinking of various scenarios but I'll give you one to add to yours.
1. We should pour every amount of resources (adding to our COE) into our pathways and hopefully uncover some stars of the future to be unearthed in 3-5 years time. (hopefully some of those boys come from our already junior grand final winners)
2. Appoint a coach right now, the best available but just get it done now and only for 2yrs.
3. Go out and get the best talent on offer for two years, those who will practically guarantee us a spot in the finals.
4. In 2-3yrs after success in reaching the finals we would be more likely to attract better players/coaches to add to our pathways stars.
One problem with this is the well has all but dried up.
In essence, what I'm eluding to is, who is more important right now, a top coach or a top roster?
I believe that players make coaches. All the top coaches in recent times have had enormous talent to work with.
Before my playing days, my cousin captained coached St George to grand final wins and there have been many more player coaches who have done that.
I feel sometimes that coaching is just another source of income for washed up players and really, all top players need is just a manager.
To highlight this, all an Australian rep side needs is someone to organise the team and they will do the rest. Do they really need coaching?
Selectors should be the captain and vice captain and maybe the leadership group.
Of course you need a coach, but someone like Morris would be adequate and give him a roster full of winners. (Maybe we could have done that with Madge 🤔)
I feel we need to get players who are cocky and aggressive by nature. I could list you several rep players who come across as arrogant, but they are just super confident people.
My summary is, get the best roster and work on pathways, that's my priority. 🤔

A coach can perform miracles but they need talent 1st.

Without better players no coach will be successful
So are you saying we could go out and get the best players now or wait till the new coach picks his.
What if noone including Sheens wants it.... does that really matter?

I see everyday other clubs announcing signings but not us what's scary what if all this silence is because they are not getting any topline coaches say they are interested and furthermore not many top flight 1st graders are showing interest ! Sure well geta few assistants wanting a step up and a few players on the outer elsewhere .The Api and Papalii deals are great and I hope they are locked in but we need about 4 more signings of same ilk.
Announce that and you'll get a lot of coach interest

I just hate the fact that we appeared to be kneeling to coaches like CC just to be turned down.
Stuff the coaches.
I bet you he would have jumped on it if we had a rep team.
Let them come begging to us then 😁

I share your angst Cobar. It’s so painful to watch the club being the punchline of media commentators jokes.
Sadly, I can’t see a bright future for the club until we fix what is broken. If we can’t fix it we need to remove it.
We need to find a better way to do business.
If we don’t improve our management practices, it will not matter how many Api’s or Papi’s we hire at overs.

I hear you.
I feel like playing again. Stop all this talk, leaks, coaching crap, contracts that are worthless, spoilt brats and an incompetent club.
Let's just get good players! Let's play decent football.
Agressive heart on sleeve footy.
Sometimes, I should say more often than not, I get a better product following my local club playing park footy.

I can understand why recruitment is said to be on hold as a coach should have a say in his side to match the style he wants to play.

Also not alot of good players would sign with a club not knowing who the coach is.

For us however given how bad our roster really is we should be throwing our hat into the ring for any quality forward (not a hooker) that comes onto the market.

You need a strong coach and a stronger board to ride through the changes....we have neither.
Personally, Flanagan is the man to ride through the wave but he is not Sheens man. Wolf would be ideal but i feel Dolphins is his or maybe Titans.
Webster has a great feel for our pathways, is highly regarded in football circles and fits the development coach requirement. Whether he can handle the day to day issues is another thing, however he is a coach that players want to play for and has a good solid apprenticeship which holds him in good stead. I would not be disappointed if he was hired.

Players with an 80 minute ticker would be a start. I don't mind losing if they are giving it their all but gee we've been soft in the latter part of seasons in particular for a while.
As for coach, don't get me started as I've said my piece on Maguire - the board's indecision/ lack of planning/ or lack of intelligence about direction is a sure-fire recipe for more years of failure. We need a board with a clear plan first.
