Benjamin Franklin's famous quote "Nothing is certain except death and taxes"...... and you can throw in there, "Weststigers Failure"
Right now I'm pondering, what monumental stuff ups are Tim Sheens and the WT board going to come up with next.
Their pending decisions on appointing a new head coach and better players have made me think....who is more important, a top notch coach like Bellamy or recruit players in the calibre of Munster and Tapine asap.
I thing it's a double edge sword because some elete players follow a good coach whilst others look at the roster & the $.
I'm sure your thinking of various scenarios but I'll give you one to add to yours.
1. We should pour every amount of resources (adding to our COE) into our pathways and hopefully uncover some stars of the future to be unearthed in 3-5 years time. (hopefully some of those boys come from our already junior grand final winners)
2. Appoint a coach right now, the best available but just get it done now and only for 2yrs.
3. Go out and get the best talent on offer for two years, those who will practically guarantee us a spot in the finals.
4. In 2-3yrs after success in reaching the finals we would be more likely to attract better players/coaches to add to our pathways stars.
One problem with this is the well has all but dried up.
In essence, what I'm eluding to is, who is more important right now, a top coach or a top roster?
I believe that players make coaches. All the top coaches in recent times have had enormous talent to work with.
Before my playing days, my cousin captained coached St George to grand final wins and there have been many more player coaches who have done that.
I feel sometimes that coaching is just another source of income for washed up players and really, all top players need is just a manager.
To highlight this, all an Australian rep side needs is someone to organise the team and they will do the rest. Do they really need coaching?
Selectors should be the captain and vice captain and maybe the leadership group.
Of course you need a coach, but someone like Morris would be adequate and give him a roster full of winners. (Maybe we could have done that with Madge 🤔)
I feel we need to get players who are cocky and aggressive by nature. I could list you several rep players who come across as arrogant, but they are just super confident people.
My summary is, get the best roster and work on pathways, that's my priority. 🤔
