What a crack up..Australia a 1st world country , news flash when the coal fired power plants stop and no neclear plants built Australia becomes a second rate Country in the Asian basin ,this country is run by morons , no base power = disaster for all.

Tim Flannery is a greenie not an engineer. There lies the difference between fantasy and reality. Trouble is people like fantasy promises rather reality promises.

It's too windy for the wind turbines to operate, solar power is only good if you can store the sun in batteries, coal fired power stations may not be that great for the environment but provide cheaper more reliable power than 'renewable' sources, then again Flannery said there would be no more decent rain fall so let's invest the tax payers money in desalination plants, look how well that went…....

Xenophon links power outage to SA's reliance on renewable energy

Senator Nick Xenophon has described the power outage that affected the whole of South Australia as a "disgrace" and suggested it could be due to the state's reliance on renewable energy. "This is a disgrace. How did this happen? How is an entire state blacked out?" the South Australian senator told the ABC. "The generators don't work when the wind is blowing too hard. This is one of the great paradoxes in relation to this.".

Things like that happen all the time in third world countries and Australia is fast becoming one.

America have brownouts all the time. These things aren't unusual in a large country plus given SA's position a feed from Vic is the only realistic option. Want a second connection? Get some costs and get back to the SA taxpayers. Either you have the environmental and cost benefits of a system with a high renewable component and accept the very infrequent problems or pay more for redundancies to avoid this.

As an electrical engineer I was very involved for years in the HV electrical power supply industry. The real reason is that State governments are these days very reluctant to spend money on improving and maintaining, at a high standard, the level of electrical power supply infrastructure.
