Blair admits to struggling at Wests Tigers

Adam Blair admits it's time to step up after struggling to adjust during a disappointing first season with Wests Tigers following his high-profile switch from Melbourne.

The combative forward's signing was seen as the final piece of the jigsaw for the Tigers, who started 2012 as favourites to win the NRL premiership.

However, it proved to be a disastrous campaign, with the team finishing 10th, coach Tim Sheens sacked and players being forced out of the club.

Blair at times looked a pale shadow of the rampaging back-rower who was a key member of Melbourne's pack and the 26-year-old revealed life away from the Storm was hard to get used to.

His poor form also led to him being dropped by New Zealand coach Stephen Kearney for Saturday's one-off Test against Australia, only to be recalled following an injury that forced Jeremy Smith to withdraw.

"How I played this year, I don't think I deserved to be picked in front of the boys who played finals footy," Blair said on Thursday in Townsville.

"I need to start stepping up at club level and for the Kiwis.

"We have lots of young players in the New Zealand side who are looking to take my place."

Blair says he struggled to adapt to a different on-field role with the more free-wheeling Tigers.

"Coming from a well-structured club like Melbourne, to somewhere where you have to find your feet was really hard," he said.

"I found myself coming in and out of games. I knew it was going to be a challenge, but it was harder than I thought it was going to be."

Blair is reported to be earning $500,000 a season at the Tigers and his arrival came after the club offloaded props Bryce Gibbs and Andrew Fifita to Cronulla last season due to salary cap pressures.

Chris Heighington and Beau Ryan have since joined the pair at the Sharks following the 2012 season, and Blair admits his performances were affected by the pressure and uncertainty surrounding the squad.

"It happens at every club, and my future is secure at the Tigers so I couldn't worry about anything else," he said.

"But I did get caught up in it all and it took away from what I was doing and how I play footy.

"When I did get it back, it was at the back end of the season but it was too late.

"I was trying to do the things that I usually do, but it wasn't what the Tigers needed from me."

I for one have been willing to understand Blair's position. Coming from a highly disciplined set up to one which was far more laid back, it was always going to be tough and it was. No more excuses now. He needs to perform better and thankfully he knows that. 2013 the pressure will be on Blairy to deliver.

I'm prepared to give him a large benefit of the doubt, but next season is career defining for Blair. Astute buy or Biggest dud, well have figured it out by the end of 2013.

New year, new slate. Its got to sting hearing the fans bag you out. Blair isn't without talent, I hope he proves us all wrong.

2013 the new Adam Blair turbo model…new and improved performance from the detuned 2012 model can't wait.

I think that interview proves three things

Blair is ill disciplined and can't follow our game plans

Sheens had lost all control of the players

What would Bellamy have done if Blair wasn't playing to his structures , he would sit his butt on the bench

And that the squad has been having issues with itself for a long time , at least half the season reading into what Blair said

Gould has a lot to answer for. I can't remember the game but he made the comment that it can take awhile for a player to adjust then it becomes a acceptable excuse. What takes 26 weeks plus pre season to adjust to? What in wests style makes you miss tackles, rush out of the line and miss your target, give copious amounts of stupid penalties and jog/spin in hit ups? He's a international VC from a premiership winning team commanding large $$$ and he's being shown up week in week out by a 2nd year rookie. I just don't get why people defend him. He was a stupid buy this season and he will still be a stupid buy next season.

Yes he did become more involved in the last game , against Melbourne. He became 2nd or 3rd man into the tackle , whereas previously he was watching from his spot at left centre.

Everyone, and i mean everyone has this convenient excuse for him…..even Blair himself, I think its BS myself...hes a so called test player, he changed clubs, its not like hes going from optometry to bloody plumbing, same game, same rules, same field, same ball.

"It happens at every club, and my future is secure at the Tigers so I couldn't worry about anything else," he said.

Doesnt make sense, he had nothing to worry about but he worried about it anyway

"I was trying to do the things that I usually do, but it wasn't what the Tigers needed from me."

Hmmmm
Such as......................?
Wouldve been the most interesting part in an otherwise bland & dull article
Always next year isnt it?

Can't journos ever talk about something other than our club. Just keep recycling the same old stories… We get it already!

You have to take the good with the bad, Tigers sell whether we are killing it or getting killed.

When a player by the name of Gareth Ellis joined our club, did he have any problems, he hit the ground running, so no excuses please Adam !

Partially agree…I think we'll know after 8 games not by the end of 2013...if we see the Blair of 2012(no impact; running backwards; silly penalties) during the first 8 weeks....then I'm prepared to say that's how he will play all of 2013.

" I just don't get why people defend him. He was a stupid buy this season and he will still be a stupid buy next season."

Sounds like a good match for Matt Parish

It may have been a contributing factor, but he did play the entire season injured.

Sorry Willow ,what injury ??

When I went back and checked about what CB said the only mention of an achilles was Benji along with his thumb, not Blair

Happy to be proven wrong though

If he has an injury , after the season he produced shouldn't he be fixing his injury and showing us what he can do ,rather than play for NZ and possibly doing more damage

Yeh 2nd time in a few days Ive heard of this season long injury….yet hadnt heard of it before all year

I remember sheens saying that he played injured against Canberra at cbtn week3\. He shouldn't have played then but he is one tuff nut but ppl on here just like bagging but never played at elite level

What does ''playing at an elite level'' have to do with commenting on the teams players?

Most if not all players play injured at some stage
