Blair escapes NRL ban, gives Tigers boost
Date April 10, 2013 - 7:33PM
Wests Tigers forward Adam Blair successfully avoided an NRL ban after pleading his case in front of the judiciary on Wednesday night, providing the struggling joint-venture club with a rare boost.

The Tigers have failed to get going in 2013, slumping to three losses from their opening five games and, on Wednesday, lost star playmaker Benji Marshall to a toe injury for at least a month.

But Blair's successful night at the judiciary gives them a significant lift ahead of Sunday's all-important showdown with St George Illawarra at the SCG.

Already boasting a mounting injury list that includes prop Keith Galloway and winger Marika Koroibete as well as Marshall, the Tigers will also be without second-rower Bodene Thompson who copped a one-week ban after pleading guilty to a grade-one dangerous contact charge.

Thompson was sanctioned for making contact with kicker Gareth Widdop at AAMI Park, and will be back to face Brisbane at Campbelltown Stadium on April 27.

But just hours after news they'd be without Marshall, Blair successfully argued his case in front of the judiciary, who threw out his grade-one dangerous contact charge.

Blair was placed on report in the 60th minute of the Tigers' loss to Melbourne on Monday after pulling the leg of Storm back-rower Kevin Proctor.

He will be available for New Zealand in Friday week's Test match with Australia in Canberra.

Marshall will certainly miss the Test match, and at least a month of NRL action after the Tigers confirmed scans had revealed he had suffered a toe ligament injury in the loss to Melbourne.

There had been fears the 'turf toe' injury could rule Marshall out for up to three months, but the club remains hopeful the former Test skipper, despite being forced to wear a moon boot for the next fortnight, will be available to face Cronulla in round nine.

"The toe doesn't look too good actually - it's pretty bruised and swollen," Tigers captain Robbie Farah told Triple M radio.

"Our physio explained it's a similar sort of injury as doing your ligament in your knee but it's a similar ligament in your big toe.

"Thankfully it doesn't require surgery but he's going to be out for a few weeks."

Marshall's replacement has yet to be named.

Tim Moltzen has experience in the halves, and a move would allow youngster James Tedesco to shift from the wing to his preferred role at fullback, while halfback Jacob Miller was only recently dropped to reserve grade.

I don't know how he got off. I'm happy with it but he is a repeat offender. He'll probably do it Sunday.

You should have a look at the replay again. No twisting basically nothing at all really except Blair breathing in the ruck which was always going to draw a penalty from those (alleged)cheats.

There was nothing in it at all. It was embarrassing for the code that he was even charged in the first place.

Good to have Adam on deck for the weekend. Thought he showed some good mongrel on Monday which will be needed again against a pack who got over the pack who destroyed us in round 1.

Nothing in it at all but I bet if Farah didn't have a slight hold he would have got suspended. Such is the confidence that I have in the match review panel and the judiciary.

doesn't give the try back they scored on the back of it.

Blair got off at Judiciary… Those in Pink shirts gave a penalty for nothin! And the Storm scored a try after they kicked downfield...after that penalty! Crying shame!!
will be interesting to see what halves the coach goes for! I think Anasta & Miller can do the job. Saints are strong up front, but our pack is starting to show some mongrel! Great to see... Now we just got to get Galloway to fire up... When he gets back!

I disagree guys. It's dirty tactic he needs to get rid of. There wasn't much in that one but he does it every week. It's unnessecary. Dirty. There was no need to even touch him, but he couldn't help himself.

Dumb play, probably stemming from frustration.

The real good players use emotion to do things that inspire their team mates. (Sam Burgess does them every week).

please

so it was also dumb of blair when he layed a pinkie on a 100kg player 5m out from the line who then fell tothe ground like a sack of potatoes?

or dumb of bmm pushing pettybourne over the try line?

it was ok, he didnt do anything illegal. the game is becoming too sanitised.

Yes I am sure he will do it on Sunday. Cameron Smith and the Melbourne Storm players do it almost every tackle. Slowing the play the ball down wins you games. I would be disapointed if Blair wasn't doing something to slow it down.

MTD- yes, some new rules and interpretations suck. But the players know what is expected.

Do you think Coach Potter sees it your way? "That's ok Adam, the rule is soft, so you just keep doing it and getting penalised. It's even funnier when you do it in our own 22."

Penalties = possession = points

Players will continue to test the waters to see what they can get away with

You'd be amazed at what finding even .5 of a second in every tackle can do for your defensive structure ,line speed and how long you can keep it at optimum levels for

Bloody hell!!! What game were you watching????

Nothing illegal at all. Crap penalty from crap referees. Blair played with plenty of mongrel. NOT with plenty of illegality.

If any team dares to belt the much loved Storm players, look out ( although their star fullback can kick a rival player in the head and that is ok). Bellyache may start bellyaching again. And again, and again.

Wise up.

Thought the tackle by Jessie Bromwich on Reddy in the 2nd half was a bit dodgy and worth a look by the match review panel. It was in the set of 6 after Marshall got flattened by Woodsy defending our line. Reddy took a hit up short of halfway and Bromwich had his fingers all over his eyes when he was on the ground, surprised Reddy didn't react TBH. If it was Blair that had done it to a Storm player I reckon something might have been made of it.
Blair needs to be extra careful, the ref's are gunning for him and just looking to penalize him for any minor incident, much the same as Gibbs was for much of his career with us. He is a marked man. It will cost us again plenty of times before the season is finished.
