Blair signing should end our rough patch, says Humphreys
Glenn Jackson - SMH
July 14, 2011

AT 3.10PM yesterday, as an email months in the making was dropping into inboxes to announce the signing of Adam Blair, Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys sat with the Herald and wondered how it had come to this. The club had just announced, finally, the signature of one of the best forwards in the world. But at what cost?

Four Tigers players had already been shed - Bryce Gibbs, Andrew Fifita, Tim Moltzen and Wade McKinnon - with many seeing those incumbents as collateral damage for the money that finally nabbed Blair from Melbourne. The Tigers are losing and seemingly losing faith as they watch their mates disappearing out the door.

''I think the way it's been played out, and the way that it's been misinterpreted, is unfortunate,'' Humphreys said. ''Having said that, I'm very confident that when he [Blair] arrives here, he'll be greeted with open arms and embraced by everyone as the marquee professional that he is.

''Bryce Gibbs and Andrew Fifita have a fresh start with upgraded long-term contracts, so has Tim Moltzen. They've all got three-year deals, all on improved terms.

''Those guys, hopefully, will go on to the next phase of their careers and do really well, and we'll all feel great for them if that happens. We'll get on with life here.''

Blair, 25, will probably remain the biggest signing of the season, yet because it has been the subject of speculation that then degenerated into something closer to hysteria, the Tigers have taken some collateral damage of their own on the way to trumpeting it yesterday.

Worth considering, too, is the prospect of Blair being seen among the Tigers' playing and supporter groups as the man who broke up the team.

But Humphreys was at pains to say that was not the case.

''Adam is a marquee signing, world-class, international, vice-captain of his country, played in three grand finals, done things that the vast majority of our squad have not done, and I think he'll add a whole lot to our club,'' Humphreys said. ''I think we're very fortunate to have him, and the fans and the playing group here will embrace him as they should.''

Blair will at least be joined by some other outsiders - Parramatta centre Joel Reddy and Penrith prop Matthew Bell being additions to the roster for next season.

Humphreys maintained the talk of disharmony in the playing group over the departures of players - as well as the continuing speculation around Penrith's possible signing of Chris Heighington and Beau Ryan - had been blown out of proportion.

''When you're not winning football games, everything's exaggerated,'' Humphreys said. ''The fact that we have underperformed to people's expectations to this point of the year means that if there is a bit of disappointment around the place, that has been amplified.

''That's certainly the case now. I wouldn't put it as unrest. I'd say the players are disappointed with their performances this year, but are quite committed to trying to turn that around.''

When it was put to him that the players were also disappointed that their friends and teammates were leaving, Humphreys said: ''You have to ask them that. That's more a private issue than a public thing. The players are contracted here to do a job and to play to their best. They're not contracted to play with their mates. They end up forming friendships, which has always been part of sport generally, and certainly in rugby league the friendships you make in this game are a great feature of the game. But at the end of the day they're a byproduct of it, not a reason for doing it. I think everyone will reconcile themselves with that.''

He admitted, though, he had raised the issue with some players, but was confident, having ended speculation surrounding Blair, that the club could move on.

''I've had my conversations with a number of the players,'' Humphreys said. ''On the one hand, they are all very well-paid professional athletes who need to not get drawn into speculation, and not be distracted … there's lots of opportunity to be distracted as a professional athlete but they need to rise above that.

''On the other hand, they're not robots. I understand why it would have been an unsettling time. I think with the announcement we can hopefully draw a line under that and move forward.''

Couldnt agree more… Time to earn your pay check and leave the personal rubbish for the cordial sessions at Benji's pad!!!

Great article.

Despite all the gloom and doom on here Humphries sounded completely professional in that interview. We've signed a player with a great record now he has to perform.

What fibs?
A lie is a deliberate untruth told to deceive. As opposed a statement that is, or turns out to be, incorrect. Or a statement that you disagree with.
I've neither heard nor read any lies from Humphreys.
He's doing a good job – as the article demonstrates.

Yep good read, I will look forward to watching Blair play in the WT strip and giving him my full support!

Well that pretty much covers every conceivable 'untruth'.

Rumours abound that Moltzen is leaving WT, Humphrey's says that Moltzen is not leaving WT.

2 or so days later it's announced Moltzen is leaving.

Oh gosh Humphrey's made an incorrect statement.

BS, he lied.

He knew Moltzen was leaving and he denied it, so he lied plain and simple.

"Statement that is, or turns out to be, incorrect" you're having a laugh.

Until an alternative contract is signed with the proper release forms, a player isnt leaving. Judging by Taubers article yesterday, Moltzen still isnt going anywhere until these items are formalised.

Humpty didnt lie… He just didnt tell you the full story!

Mr Humpty has been deceiving us for months. I have no doubt he is finding out the hard way that you can't just seemlessly transition from Corporate Australia across to a Sporting Franchise. You can BS all you like to shareholders when your business is making a bucket load of cash, but in the sporting world, you are judged on the number of games of footy you win

Actually a CEO is gauged on the revenue streams he manages over most everything else.

In that respect we have one of, if not the the, biggest value jersey sponsorship suite in the NRL and our STH base has grown each year.

Anyone who judges a CEO of a sports business with the main indicator of success being on field success is living in the dark ages IMHO.

If a CEO cannot spend a full cap and his side goes well his management is not the reason for the success. The success is in spite of it

Well Mr Humphreys,u say that it has been a unsettling time, who created the unsettling time , it was you.If you had at least given some form of information to the club supporters then there would none of this on the forum, but you elected to lie and to give out false information, and u wonder why the supporters are up in arms.I for one think blair is a good signing but not at $500k a year, his work rate is not as good as gallen or thaiday, who i would pay that money for.As for the other two good solid 1st graders, i hope on small wages. But i really hope there is one more bonus signing to come, keep ur fingers crossed. 😕

Well that's just as deceitful as far as I'm concerned.

Stringing along the paying fans for months on end.

But if they keep on losing who's gonna want to sponsor them next year ?

i.e Look at Storm when the salary cap issue broke - pretty much all sponsors pulled out.

Good point Nix. You can't have one without the other

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

I think that if people knew what's going on behind the scenes they'll see things in a different light.

Commercial arrangements between players, their agents, the relevant NRL clubs, the NRL and third party sponsors are not able to be publicly aired – especially during negotiations.

To suggest that an NRL club's CEO should keep the fans fully informed of such arrangements and developments is, in my humble opinion, entirely misconceived. It is a naive, childish view of the professional sporting world.

For a starter all of our commercial arrangements of significance are already locked in for next season.

Secondly the brand has been heavily promoted through FTA television coverage this season regardless of form.

So a severe salary cap rort involving complex deception over a number of years is comparable to what has happened on and off field to the Wests Tigers in season 2011? Now I have heard it all

bahaha… thats like complaning about the local Steakhouse changing the T-Bone to a Rib Eye... "for all these years I've been eating a T-Bone, and now they have changed it..."

Grow Up... You have NO RIGHTS to know what is going on behind the scenes of the Club unless you are an Investor/Sponsor!
