Bodene Thompson welcomes challenge

Wednesday 7 November 2012 9:18 AM

New Wests forward Bodene Thompson is looking forward to the challenge of trying to secure a back-row position.

One of several new recruits for 2013, Thompson has joined Wests Tigers on a two-year deal from the Gold Coast Titans, the club he made his first grade debut in 2009.

The 24-year-old has played 49 NRL games.

“We have had a few new signings and there are heaps of back-rowers, so there’s going to be plenty of competition for me,” he said.

“I look forward to that because I love competition. It brings the best out of blokes. It will bring the best out of all of us and it will be better for the team in the long run.

“That’s what I’m looking for. I want to do the best I can for the team.”

Born in Tauranga, New Zealand, not far from Benji Marshall’s home town of Whakatane, Thompson was a late starter to Rugby League.

He took up the game at age 16 when he moved to the Gold Coast to live with his aunty. A former student at renowned rugby league school, Keebra Park, Thompson went on to represent the Gold Coast Titans at NYC and NRL level.

Marshall, Ben Murdoch-Masila, Mosese Fotuaika, Andrew Vela and Kurtis Rowe are also former Keebra Park students.

Don't know enough about him but could be a good buy if he has a good work ethic

injury stricken. when he did play he surely did make a name for himself. Only 24\. Another parting gift from our beloved Timmy Sheens.

I think Thompson will surprise a few Tigers supporters with how strong he hits !

Generally when hes played center iirc….but youre right he can put a big one on

Why not this year? I should have used the word "backrow" instead of "second row". Last year Ellis was affected by injury and Heighnington went off the boil. Blair seemed to be rudderless. One of the main areas where West Tigers need rejunevation with capable and keen players is the backrow and when you take into account the new imports and promising players including Shaun Spence and the U20 boys WT certainly have them this year. Liam Fulton and to a less extent Ellis were effective last year but if I have a criticism of the 2012 WT back row it is that there was no competition for the starting spots. Consequently it was the same players picked in the starting back row each week. Not much incetive to improve.

There's a video of Bodene speaking on WTV. He has a good attitude from what I can tell and knows he has a few in front of him if he is going to get a start in the top 17.

Calm down.
You made it sound like it will be something new.

Hot competition in second row this year.

Fact is weve always had a glut of backrowers, Sheens needs a center, buys a back rower, needs a prop, buys a back rower

Wants to cememt a spot in the backrow - his preference.

Lote was at training.

Hes a Keebra boy

Signed by Sheens, now Potter coach, no drama - manager did all talking, didnt care who coach was by the sounds of it.

In rehab group, dislocated a shoulder last season, had surgery last June, should be ready for contact traing after xmas

membership target for the club next year is 12,000

how many do we have in rehab group

Thompson, Galloway, Sironen. Possibly Vela although like Tedesco, he was injured very early in the season and might be right to go, same with Tuqiri and his broken arm.

Looking forward to see how Thompson goes with us

As a second rower he is what we are looking for if he can be consistant

Hard running second rower with speed ,size and mobility Could be a bigger threat than BMM with his attributes close to the line
