WESTS TIGERS centre Chris Lawrence had targeted next year as his season of atonement following a disappointing 2012.

The 24-year-old's campaign this year reflected the Wests Tigers' roller-coaster ride after they kicked the season off as premiership favourites but failed to make the top eight.

"I'm looking forward to it," Lawrence said of the Wests Tigers' season opener against Newcastle at Hunter Stadium on March 11.

''Not making the top eight was disappointing as a team but you need to look at each individual performance and, myself included, we just didn't perform how we should have.

"I put a lot of pressure on myself to be better. I was happy with the way I played in 2011 but sometimes [in 2012] circumstances through my fault, sometimes no one's fault, sometimes through different things, didn't allow it to pan out that way. I'm looking forward to the new season."

Lawrence, who has played six Tests for Australia, admitted that when he failed to fulfil his goal of representing the Blues in State of Origin he had to accept the reason why he was overlooked by the selectors.

"I wasn't playing good enough, it was as simple as that," he said. "It was my goal to play for NSW but the two guys they picked, Michael Jennings and Josh Morris, played great football.

"As much as I tried and worked hard to get there, I have to now find a way to play better. My attitude is I have to play better than the two best centres in NSW if I want a crack."

While Lawrence was loath to make excuses for the club's winter of discontent, he said the attrition rate among his team's halves - which resulted in makeshift combinations that included Origin hooker Robbie Farah and second-rower Liam Fulton among others playing alongside Benji Marshall - hurt them.

"What was frustrating for the outside backs, and it was no one's fault, was the constant changeover of the halves," he said.

"It was hard to get the combinations and timing right and I think that had a bit to do with our form. When you have a regular combination you get used to the play, you know the timing of his pass and how far to run on the ball, when to run onto it and where to be at the right time.

"When you go through the play day after day … Benji doing his stuff across the field and Timmy Moltzen going through and me running my line … it becomes second nature. If I see Benji running a play, I know exactly what line to run and when to be there so he can hit me either side, go himself or whatever. We all become a 'live' option and it's great because you know if you get the ball, you're a good chance of scoring."

Away from the field Lawrence, who is contracted to Wests until the end of 2015, had received widespread acclaim for his initiative to go to schools and corporations to explain the benefits of good health and nutrition in an easy-to-understand manner.

I really hope Lawrence, along with the entire squad are much improved in 2013\. I guess I've taken it for granted over the last few years, seeing Lawrence put into the clear and scoring some top tries. Hopefully with a settled halves combo and an injury free run, we'll see Lawrence recapture some form again.

I think the guy that was picking the team can take some responsibility.

Can't believe he's still only 24, doesn't seem that long ago since making his debut against the Broncs as a 17yr old. As long as we have a settled halves pairing and CL has a good run without injuries I'm expecting him to bounce back to the player we know he is.

Up until last year, Lawrence was one of our most reliable players. He'd scored regularly (or would come close to it) set a couple up, and stop the opposition scoring by reading the man he was marking. His defense was getting better each game, pulling off some great 1 on 1 tackles on men bigger than him (the tackle on Fui Fui in the 2011 end of season test was one of the best). His speed was electric….you'd back him in a race to the line when in open space and his handling errors were minimal. Last year that all went out the window and I now worry that the best is behind him. Lets hope he's right and it was mainly the consistency in the halves that kept him from gaining form this season and not other factors. For the club to do well, we need consistent players like Lawrence to be going well.

It just highlights the disgraceful management of the team by the coach last year. Ok there were a few injuries, however, What was it, 9 different halves combinations? Thats just a farce and no wonder a player of the class of Lawrence could not find any fluency. Yes he was well below his best, however the halves situation clearly impacted his season.

Merry Xmas Eddie.

WTF?? you worry about a guy who is proven and where the team as a whole performed badly, and even in his own words the selection process had a big part in his poor form… and your worried about his best is behind him???... Based off what exactly?????

Its simple to me , Play a real half at halfback and persist with him.

and the rest will work itself out .
'Jacob Miller should get the first crack , he already has a huge combination with Marika k .

Yeah have to agree there T-Rexx, Lawrence is only 24, not 30! His best is definitely still to come.

disagree, I think if either centre will have a below par year it will be Jennings. Lawrence will have to improve dramatically to even be considered but he definitely has the ability and the drive

I really think Jennings will be the one under pressure to keep his spot for the Blues, he made the side without ever really performing that well at times over the last 2 years. I think his selection showed a bit of a gap in our attacking centre dept.

For me Jorris was one of our best backline players for 2012, this will carry him well if Daley chooses to go with Stuarts philosophy of picking a squad and sticking.

An injury that almost left him in a wheelchair perhaps? Its a very realistic chance that he won't be the player he was pre-injury. It was like Simon Dwyer's injury but on a much lower scale, it was absolutely brutal. Here's hoping he can get back to where he was, but people should understand if he doesn't the injury would have a lot to with it

I believe AJ has a point that Lawrence might not be the same, but not for the reasons he gave

Too many halves pairings. Ridiculous

looks like Moltzen is doing most of the training at fullback atm.
