Boxing does it again

UFC > BOXING.

No debate.
UFC is at a place where Boxing wishes it could be.

All the kids that use to wanna be Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis now want to be Anderson Silva, George St Pierre or Jon Jones.

Times have changed.
You can't just throw some fists and win you have to fight takedowns, jiu jitsu, etc.

I can't get into UFC even though I know the guys are tough dudes.
When I was growing up only girls fought on the ground.
Once a bloke hit the dirt and couldn't get up you helped him to his feet , shook hands, and had a beer together.

I'm a boxing fan always will be & can't watch ufc I don't wanna watch guys laying on each other. Every sport goes through tough times & boxing will to.

boxing will survive…sure, there are lots of crap bouts and sometimes the judging is totally dodgy, but you still see heaps of good battles.

UFC is ok but so many fights end up as boring grapples, grovelling around on the ground. Like boxing, there are good and not so good battles. The way some fellas keep bashing away when the opponent is on the ground half knocked out is a turn off and unsportsmanlike.

I still prefer to watch a good box rather than a wrestle.....seems to be more art involved . But at the same time I have heaps of respect for both sports and the guys that put themselves on the line....awesome

But Mundine........no time for him

I used to be that way but for me MMA is a far superior combat sport. Most MMA guys these days possess striking abilities that rival any boxer of the modern era and add to that their use of knees, kicks, ju jitsu takedowns and grappling….there is no contest. They are the worlds premier fighters.

Agree with you, much prefer to watch a great boxing match than a great MMA fight. Problem is, there aren't that many great boxing matches these days.
The way some blokes get in another 3 or 4 full-blooded strikes on a downed, semi-conscious or unconscious opponent is pretty bad IMO. Some of these blokes are gonna be vegetables after their career has finished you would think, it couldn't be good for you.

Alot of research points to the larger glove size in boxing which in turn allows fighters to sustain alot more head strikes as a leading factor in brain injuries.

Although getting knocked out isnt all that good for you, nor those last few punches in MMA of a downed opponent, MMA promotions, especially the premier promotions, have fairly decent protocols for post fight injury suspensions (handed down by independent sports commission) to protect fighters. The suspensions not only govern how soon they can fight, but also stipulate no contact training times as well, sometimes up to 6 months.

I'd have to agree. I don't like UFC at all. I find it ugly. I'll stick to boxing.

Must admit I enjoy both , but the more memorable fights for me are the usually the great boxing matches

The one that still stands out for me was the Harding v Andries fight , being behind on points in the last and knocking Andries out was just pure guts

Good ol' "Hit Man" hey Happy! That bloke had a head for boxing that is for sure, at the end of that fight he looked as if he had been camping out in the carcass of a slaughtered wildebeast.

Lester Ellis and Barry Michael put on some good stoushes both against each other and other opponents back in the day also. Then Lester had a brain short-circuit and wanted to take the NSW police force on with a samurai sword didn't he?! One too many short rights to the melon will do that to a bloke though :wtf

Can remember a funny moment after Kostya Tszyu had pummelled Ben Tackie from Kenya for 10 brutal, one-sided rounds. Tackie walks up to him and says "rematch" to which Kostya looks at him in utter bewilderment and says " I don't think so". The look on Kostya's face was priceless.

Those were the grand old days of Aussie boxing, now all we have to look forward to is Danny Green and Mundine calling each other out from behind their zimmer frames and gophers for the next 40 years.

Hitman Harding… What a tragic post career life he's had.

Did he ever end up successfully getting off the piss? Last I read he was homeless in Sydney somewhere (Redfern?)

FTB Harding looked like he had been in a Rocky movie that night V Andries

But it was for real

I didn't realize that he was in such bad shape CB

Very sad to hear

yeh, i completely agree; i hate to see this as well. this falls on the referees shoulders and they have to be fully aware of someone being knocked out. im sure they have really clamped down on this, and it can lead to fights being stopped too early, which is annoying.

not everyone is going to like mma, and will stick with boxing. but my point is that i think the ufc has taken a lot of the fans and revenue boxing would have otherwise had.

Lester was "connected" down in Melbourne. Sadly Barry Michael copped the side effects of that…

Yeah, didn't Barry Michael have a gun put in his face by somebody? Wasn't it to do with Gangitano and his mates in Carlton, is it for certain that Lester Ellis had anything to do with it?

Have read something like that in one of the original Underbelly books the 'Black Prince' gave him a massive hiding in a cafe that effectively ended his career, apparently Angelo did his money backing the wrong fighter & wanted payback.

Barry Michael would of wiped the floor with him in a fistfight if it came down to that. Blokes that rely on guns to intimidate normally can't fight for s#*t. He probably had 4 or 5 of his mates giving him a hand you would think.
