If Luke Brooks needs advice on how to handle being one of the most hyped-up, torn-down and scrutinised players in the game, he doesn't need to look far.

It's only one game into the season and Brooks' halves partner, Braith Anasta, has again been cast as the villain. The veteran Wests Tigers playmaker has been singled out for stinging criticism for his performance in the loss to the Dragons.

Anasta has tasted premiership success and represented NSW and Australia during an illustrious career. However, he has been an easy target for critics, earning Rugby League Week's most overrated tag on numerous occasions. Now 32 and playing in his 15th and possibly final season in the NRL, the flak isn't any easier to take.

"It bewilders me really, I don't understand it," he said.

"[RLW magazine] keeps hammering me with their over-rated stuff. To be honest, you've got to be rated before you can be over-rated. If I was over-rated when I was 19 or 20, why am I still copping it now? I just don't get it.

"I'm trying to enjoy my footy at the back end of my career and do the best job I can possibly do but I'm still copping it. It is frustrating [but] there's not much I can do about it.

"I can go out there, have a good game and no one will mention a thing. It will be 'how good was this bloke or that bloke'; they just expect me to do my job. It goes both ways.

"I don't want to sit here and act like a whinger because I'll cop it for that, too. You know what I mean? It's a no-win situation."

The former Roosters captain said the constant scrutiny made it difficult to enjoy his football and may force him into premature retirement.

"You've got people being critical who really, I think, have no idea," he said.

"I don't need the headache [of playing on], that's for sure. That's probably been the hardest thing over my whole career, the crap that's gone with everything.

"I've enjoyed the game, I've achieved everything I can achieve and the mates I've made throughout my career. I've got a great relationship with everyone in the game, everyone, except some of the media. And I don't know why. It does take away the gloss and that enjoyment a little bit."

A free agent at the end of the season, Anasta admitted he would make an early call on his career "if we're struggling and not getting the best out of myself". However, he was adamant he still had something to offer.

"Of course I do," he said. "Watch my game closely on the weekend, I put a couple of bad kicks in. Apart from that, I don't know how you can possibly blame me for the loss in that game. It seems to keep happening, I've got a bit of a bullseye on me."

Anasta fears that target could soon be on Brooks. After his man-of-the-match performance against the Dragons last year, the teenage halfback did it tougher against the same team in his second NRL game. Like those on Anasta, some of the expectations on him have been unrealistic. Which is why Anasta is a valuable mentor and sounding board.

"He has been great for me on and off the field," Brooks said.

"He helps me out whenever I need it. He takes over the team if I am struggling. So he has been really good for me."

As for Anasta's main piece of advice?

"I just told him to enjoy himself," Anasta said.

"To relax, play his game and enjoy his footy. It's not going to be easy; he's got a lot of pressure on him. Being a halfback is a key position, there's a lot of expectation. Teams are going to target him so he's just got to enjoy himself. We've got to stick up for him and help him out."

I agree with pretty well everything he said. He has always been a target, and not of his own making. Still being made the scapegoat after all these years.

Sorry Braith, but that just about sums up exactly how you have played for us since rd 1 2013\. It really looks like he doesn't give a rat's arse whether he gives the game away or not. He wasn't solely to blame for our p#*s-poor performance last week, but if he can't kick properly in general play and refuses to run the ball or set up his outside men then why is he still getting a game in our team FFS? Astonishing really.

Our club accepts mediocrity more readily than the rest of the comp and that is why we are the cannon-fodder of the NRL both on and off the field.

His defence was impeccable on Sunday. Far better than brooks or Benji. And his last play options were as poor as Farah and brooks, guess we should sack them too

Take it with a grain of salt if you wish, however i have a mate who regularly plays golf with him.

Said he is on a heavily back-ended contract. He was promised a 100K 3rd party deal at the Tigers which they still have not payed him yet plus his annual salary being backloaded. He said in fairness to him that he is training his guts out and helping Brooksey on and off the paddock.

He said the Tigers are amature hour compared to other clubs in terms of facilities and money. Apparently last season things were so bad at times they couldn't afford new footballs or gatorade bottles, and trainers were forced to make mixes of gatorade on the sideline for the finish of training.

Really hard words to take from this guy. I mean, I hear him to some extent. He's reaching the end and it sounds like he's gonna hang em up soon and he's just about heard enough criticism but to blatantly pass the buck and not take responsibility for any of what happened on the weekend, however true, is just not normal. I would hate to read that if I was Potter. Who knows where Anasta's head is now.

I bet he went straight to a journo mate with his sook story the moment Potter told him he was going back to the second row this weekend. Potter should just turn around and punt him for that imo.

Boo hoo.

let your football do the talking braith and the wests tigers supporters will love you.

and a try wouldn't go astray either.

Its a fair point. Brooks, Farah & Anasta were all ordinary but Anasta was probably the best of those three.

Tedesco was the best of our spine but he had some mistakes in him as well.

To me all those players need to step up.

When Chris Anderson picked his belovered Canterbury Boy on the Wing for Australia all those years ago, it started the ball rolling on this…

He was a good footballer, a real competitor and has had a good career.

This will be his last!

As has been stated thousands of times Brooks will live and die on the performances of his forward pack

His forwards were totally dominated in attack and defence and it showed

When they can stand up Brooks will fair far better

Blame our forwards , not Brooks or Anasta

East's told him when he was done. I think they got it right.

He should zip it and let his footy do the talking… but then he has had probably 2 good games for the tigers ever.

Potter gave him first shot at 6 because he is no second rower and he repays that by mouthing off in the paper.

He should be grateful for the chance as i'm not sure another NRL club would have in in 1sts.

Try harder Anasta , perhaps a 6th tackle option would help?

You think he would be wise enough to ignore his critics anyway.

Yep, and that is the main crux of the argument against Anasta staying our 5/8\. His defence might have been ok last week but he offers zero in attack, we may as well go back to playing Fulton at 6 if we are happy to just have a good defender in that position.

People saying that Braith defended better than Farah :crazy Farah had a below-par game last week but has been carrying this team on his back for as long as I can remember and had illness all week leading up to the Dragons game-it is a pretty poor and disrespectful comparison TBH.

He's been bagged from the moment he was announced as a signing at this club. Probably because Sheens bought him as a half back. I'm going to support him because he plays for us, and well if he plays well, hopefully the rest of the team will have aswell.

For whatever reason I think Anasta wears his heart on his sleeve too much, so it's easy for people to pick on him. Kind of like Ricky Stuart, he's an easy target when he's not going well.

Anasta isn't over-rated, nobody rates him anymore. Sure he is past his best, but he used to carve us up and you can't say he hasn't had a notable career, better than most FG players.

The part of the article I don't understand is that he says "yeah it's hard and you lose some gloss off the career, perhaps even early retirement, because of the criticism" then he says Brooks should "ignore what people say". Take your own medicine Braith, forget any external stuff and just play good consistent footy. We will love you for it!

Pretty embarrassing to see the 19 year old kid giving quotes defending the veteran. Re Braith I thought you were there to take the pressure of Brooks? Don't let the door hit you on the way out you utter, utter waste of space.

3 years past his use by date .yes braith I watched your game and it wasn't up to first grade standard .didn't anybody tell you about the new in goal rules ?im sick of hearing the excuses .we played yet another ordinary team into form

braith ansata is a joke, countless opportunities for us, has had like 2 good games out of 20 odd. no where near good enough, shouldn't even be playing nsw cup
