Battle of Britain for Sam Burgess, Gareth Ellis

THEY will rip in tonight with the aggression and tenacity of two hungry British bulldogs.
English teammates Gareth Ellis and Sam Burgess will go head-on tonight in what shapes as a lively clash between Wests Tigers and South Sydney at the SFS.
Ellis (ankle) and Burgess (shoulder) were officially passed fit yesterday, setting up what should be a full-on Battle of Britain.
Both players have missed the past three weeks, with Burgess being put through a series of tests on a medical device nicknamed Kin Com, which measured the strength of his left shoulder compared with the right.
"I'm fit to play," Burgess declared.
Asked if he expected to be targeted, Burgess said: "The shoulder is fine. If they want to run at it I am ready to tackle and ready to play."
Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens was last night attempting to play down Ellis's impact this evening. "I am happy to have him back but Gareth won't win us or lose us the game," he said. "It is a team effort in every game.
"Gareth is one member of the side so I'm not expecting anything spectacular from him. You guys [media] are building up the Ellis-Burgess match-up but Gareth would just like to get through the game healthy."
Burgess expected Ellis to play but was, tongue-in-cheek, hopeful he would remain sidelined. While both English, the playing styles of each are deeply different.
Ellis powers through his work with little fanfare, Burgess is a more explosive player who puts an element of fear into opposition sides.
The two players from northern England yesterday attracted plenty of praise going into tonight's big match.
Former Test and Balmain star Paul Sironen rated Ellis the best second-rower in the NRL. "I wouldn't swap Gareth for anybody in the competition," he said.
"We've certainly missed him and Gareth is the sort of bloke who would have passed on some tips to Sam over the years in the English side, so Sam is the heir apparent.
"It will be the young bull up against the old one."
Former Souths prop Peter Tunks was straight to the point about Burgess's return.
"If Burgess is back the Tigers will have their hands full," Tunks said. "Sam is a very, very special player. The best player I saw from England was Ellery Hanley.
"From what I've seen so far from Sam, he's a special talent, tough, a leader and one of the best forwards running around in the competition today."
The return of Ellis slightly eases Wests Tigers crippling injury toll although Chris Lawrence, Lote Tuqiri and Liam Fulton still remain sidelined.
Sheens is yet to reveal which player will drop out of the Tigers squad for Ellis.
After a dismal start to the season, Souths have recorded successive wins over Parramatta and Manly.
With 35,000 fans expected at the SCG for Sunday's match between Canterbury and the Dragons, the Moore Park precinct will attract 60,000 fans over the Heritage Round.
Souths will start the match $1.65 favourites, according to TAB Sportsbet, with Wests Tigers the $2.25 outsiders.
