So was Taumata dangerous in attack at all or simply a turnstyle in defence? I noticed against Wests the other week that he is an arm grabber, a bit like Lui. These blokes need to learn to go in with the shoulder, it's much more effective.
Thanks for that Aladinsane, shame about his defence but hopefully it's something he can work on over the next season or 2.

Taumata didn't get a great deal of the ball in structured backline moves. The Tigers game plan revolved around working tight at the ruck for the most part.
Meaney was excellent, Nicholls is really developing into a linchpin for this side. All the forwards really stepped up a notch as well.
A really good performance as a team. Canterbury tried to drag the game down to a brawl and were lucky not to have a player at least sin binned for some of the high shots etc. They were missing two players according to the programme and their fans tried to use that as an excuse until I pointed out the two Schirnacks, MacDougall and Mataka sitting in the bullpen unfit to play.
I look forward to the replay. Hopefully Tim Sheens was watching Meaney very closely as he provided the best fullback performance by anyone at this club for years and was also excellent when Taumata and he swapped. His defence in the centres was excellent

Mmmmm,Meaney.
There hasnt been too many from the lowers that are saying pick me,but Meaney is one of them IMO.

**Tigers maul Bulldogs**

The Balmain Ryde-Eastwood Tigers bounced back in scintillating style from last week’s loss to humble the Canterbury Bulldogs 54-16 at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.
A 3-try, 30 point contribution from Tigers’ fullback Sean Meaney & a spectacular end-to-end team try by the Tigers were the standout highlights in this round’s FOX Sports TV game.
Meaney opened the scoring after 7 minutes, crossing under the posts supporting a scrum line break by five eighth Darren Nicholls 30m out & he converted to take the score to 6-0.
3 minutes later winger Lee Bennett scored under the posts after Meaney went through a huge gap down the right hand centres using a clever dummy 30m out from the Bulldogs’ line, drew defenders then popped an inside pass to Bennett who improved the position. Meaney’s conversion made the score 12-0.
In the 16th minute Bennett saved a certain Bulldogs’ try to winger Brent Beddy with a huge cover tackle out of nowhere that knocked the ball out of his hands just inches from the try line.
The Tigers took advantage of Bennett’s effort with winger Sam Latu crossing out wide in that next set. Front rower David Gower split the defence through the left hand centres on halfway, offloaded to second rower Matt Ryan who ran 30m before finding Latu unopposed & he outpaced the cover to cross. Meaney converted to extend the lead to 18-0.
Soon after Meaney scored his second under the posts after halfback Blake Lazarus made a break on halfway, drew Canterbury fullback Tim Winitana & put Meaney away for the final 20m. His conversion took the score to 24-0.
With 5 minutes to go Canterbury got on the board when front rower Tim Browne barged over from close range taking defenders with him. Halfback Josh Reynolds converted to make the score 24-6.
Just before halftime Meaney posted his third 4-pointer, crossing out wide after Ryan made a superb break just into Bulldogs’ territory, ran 20m then in an exact replay of Meaney’s earlier try, drew Winitana before giving Meaney unfettered passage to the line. His conversion gave the Tigers a 30-6 lead at halftime.
Canterbury were first to trouble the scorers upon resumption when centre Kose Lelei crossed out wide after a long floating pass gave Beddy space up the touchline & he found Lelei in support to cross. Reynolds didn’t convert & a comeback looked on the cards at 30-10.
In the 15th minute Lazarus scored out wide after good ball movement down the left hand side of the field opened up the rest of the field & Lazarus took advantage of thin defence, threw a dummy then scooted through to score. Meaney’s conversion took the score to 36-10.
Soon after Ryan crashed over near the left hand corner after the Tigers got upfield from halfway in one set & centre Gavin Cowan laid it off for Ryan to hit a gap. Meaney’s near-sideline conversion put them further ahead 42-10.
With 9 minutes to go Lazarus got a double under the posts, finishing off the most spectacular team try executed by the Tigers all season. Cowan intercepted a Bulldogs pass 15m out from his own line & showing great support involving 5 different players, the ball went through 7 sets of hands before Canterbury finally ran out of defenders & Lazarus finished off the movement. Meaney kept his kicking record intact & advanced the score to 48-10.
Soon after Winitana grabbed a consolation try under the posts with the Tigers unable to defend against a series of offloads & Reynolds converted to make the score 48-16.
In the final minute Tigers replacement Brett Lane capped off a great team effort with an outstanding solo effort, breaking through the scrum defence 10m out from his own line & with assistance from centre Arana Taumata outsprinted the cover defence to cross under the posts & Meaney converted to give the Tigers a resounding 54-16 victory at full time.
The Tigers never really let Canterbury settle into the game & their attempts to outmuscle the Tigers just seemed to create attacking opportunities which the Tigers willingly accepted.
**Darren Nicholls was a well-deserved Players’ Player, giving the team solid direction throughout the game.** Sean Meaney & Matthew Ryan couldn’t be kept out of the match & both players were well rewarded.
Next week the Tigers are at Leichhardt Oval again taking on the North Sydney Bears on Saturday 29 May commencing at 3pm. Don’t miss a minute of the action!

The best fullback at the club in any grade for mine.
Sheens was there but whats the bet if any fullback is bought up it will not be him

I like how he gets into dummy half ala Gidley and gets our attack rolling foward.

Actually there is a great final week 1 game of Balmain Vs Norths Sydney @ North Sydney Oval…..I remember it was a stinking hot day, where Ryan Tandy carved up again as he did all year long in 2008.....yet got a 5 minute call up in first grade.
