YES, he’s back. But Tigers supporters can rest easy, ex-NRL coach Brian Smith is not gunning for the off-contract Mick Potter’s job at Concord.

The Tigers have hired one of league’s most polarising figures in a consultancy role as the club embarks on a review of its football operations.

Tigers CEO Grant Mayer confirmed Smith is midway through a month-long examination of the club, from its coaching pyramid to the playing roster, junior development and key football staff.

A sighting of Smith at the Tigers’ Concord headquarters last Thursday triggered conjecture about whether the veteran coach was being interviewed to replace Potter next season.

But Mayer has hosed down the notion of Smith making a return to the NRL coaching ranks, with the off-contract Potter expected to be rewarded with a new deal over the next fortnight.

“Brian is the first one to say coaching is behind him now. I think he genuinely believes he’s got a role to play and so do we. I spoke to Brian four months ago initially about this sort of project,” Mayer said.

“He still loves the game and wants to be involved in some way. We need some experience and Brian fits the bill as a completely independent individual. I can categorically say he’s not interested in coaching again. The reality is we want to pick his brain. Brian Smith has a varied experience base in elite football and also junior development.

“I want him to speak to people in our club who have also come from varied backgrounds. His job is to basically extract as much information out of the people in the business as he can so we can continue to grow our business.”

Smith, who coached 601 NRL matches in a career spanning five clubs and 28 seasons, last week was busy interviewing staff and players and will file an internal report to the Tigers in the next fortnight.

Players and staff being interviewed are told to speak as frankly as possible in an anonymous format, with Smith to refrain from detailing who said what in his final report.

Tigers coach Potter, who played under Smith at St George from 1989 to 1993, welcomed the review and said he held no fears in terms of his own job security coming under threat from his ex-coach.

“I can understand people coming up with an equation by seeing Brian Smith wherever they’ve seen him and coming up with an assumption,” Potter told The Sunday Telegraph.

“He’s been around and he’s put some great programs in place over the years and I don’t think his experience should go unnoticed and unused.

“We’re hoping to get a little bit of a restructure out of it and to also implement some best practice procedures.

“Whether that be around facilities, medical, junior league development, it’s far reaching as far as our department is concerned.”

Potter confirmed star fullback James Tedesco, who announced his defection to Canberra last week, was expected to be available for next Sunday’s match against Newcastle at Hunter Stadium.

Injured young gun Curtis Sironen also played his second match of NSW Cup against Wentworthville on Saturday and the promising rookie is expected to soon press for inclusion in the Tigers NRL line-up.

With six wins and five losses this season, Potter only needs one more victory to equal the Tigers’ win-record posted last season, underlining how the coach has earned the right to be tabled a new contract.

All we need now is Sheens to come back as his assistant!….retrograde step in my view...what can Smith really offer?...If they wanted to review the "operations" bring some one in from another code....that way they get an unbiased perspective

Experienced but tarnished with a reputation of GF disappointments and personality fall outs.

Some of us can be very short sighted with our views , and how we each read into things differently. My view on Brain Smith having a consultancy role in the club is a master stroke as stated in the article his coaching days are behind him.
What he offers the club is 30 yrs + of rugby league experience in all aspects of the game ,this tells me the club is defiantly moving in the right direction and the people in control are implementing a positive agenda for the future . I am over the negative views of my club things had to change and by what I have been privy to so far the club is on the path to success, I hope in the not to distant future more experienced people of the caliber of Brian Smith with join our club …well done!

Good with a broom….
...keep the footballs away from him.

I'm thinking the same thing. When he was at the Chooks I overheard him talking to a few of the NYC boys on the sidelines in a trial against the Tigers at Campbelltown…I wondered what planet he had arrived from.

Totally agree he is not a great coach but that is not what he is here for.For what he is being employed for it is an astute move.just dont let him near the players

Agree with Snake

Not much of a coach - but in the administrative field and with new operative set ups and practical administrative procedures - he is a master.

Well done Mayer ( and whoever else was involved). We were lacking in this area. (Remember Humphries?)

I am not a fan. When I first read it I had a cold chill run down my back. Every club he has been associated with has been left in a worse condition than before he came. I just hope he doesn't have too much power at WTs.

The guy is misunderstood imo. I can understand why people don't like him, i never use to either. As someone who can't cop Parra, i often took great delight in how often he came up short coaching them. However, he does serve a purpose at a club. His role, even though he's been around as long, isn't a Bennett or Sheens type role where he steps into a club and takes control of them for a decade, its not what he's geared for. His role is to come and clear the deadwood and build them from the ground up, he's a good hatchet man, a mercenary. After 2 or 3 yrs you move him on his way before he's had a chance for the rut to set in. His record at Newcastle and the Roosters is evidence of this. Hits the ground running and makes a real impact, before the rut. You just sign him to a short term deal and get the most out of what he has to offer.

Love th grand final criticism He cops He made it to. 3 didn't win 1\. Wat a failure. !! Imagine how many coaches would love that tag. Just to make the finals they b happy. He has so much knowledge th tigers r asking him to examine our setup. Great idea

Smith has a reputation for setting up good programs at clubs, just not such a good tactical coach.

By all reports, examples like Parra and Knights are happy with the restructuring he did, the clean-outs.

Tigers aren't asking for his tactical brain, they are asking about his programs.

I think it is a great move. All the pelicans complaining about the way the club is run or the structures in place, decisions being made; we get a guy in to review that independently, and that is a bad move too?

Yeah right, then why is he on the shortlist at the Dragons if Mary can't turn things around.

Bad move IMHO,carries too much baggage and causes Clubs to fragment into pro-anti Smith camps.Hopefully his"consultancy" will be short and in the background.
