Brooks at 9

Would be good to pair him with an organising half a la Blake Green and a second rower that doesn’t cramp him for space in attack.

@happy_tiger I like Brooks and he has played great at times this year. My problem with him is that he isn't performing when we are up against it. I don't think quicker ball will help that.

He has all the skills and there are times he looks great. I just don't know what to do to get him playing to the level that we need.

At least Brooks would provide the ball infront of our runners.

Would give us kicking options and his left/right passing isn’t terrible.

If he darted out of dummy half would be the fastest hooker in the comp over 20-30m

We could do alot worse in trying.

Mbye / Reynolds would be more of my bet if we don’t sign someone

He HAS to get it when he wants it

Perfect example last night we have a play late that went through numerous hands and had us around 15 metres out and Brooks is looking at a 6 on 3 on tackle 4 ... we score and its 26-18 with 6 to go

Taylor goes right ....I think from memory they showed Brooks after this play and he says F_bomb me 4 times in a row to himself

@happy_tiger - so you think it's just a matter of giving him the ball more ? I honestly don't know but I can see your point.

The problem is I see Benji going bonkers and trying to win us games like a madman when we are down. Benji makes busts and creates chances. Brooks doesn't seem to do this anywhere near as much when we are up against it. Benji gets the same poor service that Brooks does.

I really wanted to see Liddle feeding our halves and providing a real threat out of dummy half for the rest of the year but that went to puss didn't it.

For reference what does everyone think of Ben Hunt?

I think he is a decent 7, but lacks too many things.

As a 9 he is probably the 3rd best in the NRL....excellent in Origin.

Everyone said he could not play 9, but he played it in Origin, the ultimate test.

Hunt has nothing in his game that would suggest Brooks could not do the same.

Certainly did ......

I see the argument from the other side though ..he has had a lot of chances to improve ....but then again when are we going to get a forward pack that can stand firm against the top sides

That is the big issue .... we are probably at least 2 years from solving our forwards / Reynolds / possible hooker dilemma

Can we wait for Brooks ...

I can't see any better option than
6 Reynolds
7 Benjo
9 Brooks
this week. I have thought Brooks would make a great hooker for a few years now.

I think Brooks is one of the 4 or 5 best all round halfbacks in the NRL. He does organise a lot of our attack and I really don't understand what people on this forum that say he is not an organising half expect him to do.

In previous eras there have been better halfbacks.

Brooks could probably play 9, but we pay him about $750k a year which is a lot of the cap to spend when we are severely lacking in other areas. To replace our halfback with someone definitely better I can only think of DCE who is on $1.3M.

No team can have a brilliant 6, 7, 9 and 1, you have to find a good balance and a spine that covers each others weaknesses

Brooks is a good player at a reasonable value playing 7
Benji is a good 5/8 at very good value, I wish he would make less mistakes and we need a plan for 2021
We need a decent experienced hooker for the next 2 years
Reynolds is not a standard 5/8, at the bulldogs he played more like a fullback in support and James Graham usually played 1st receiver. He would work well with a goof halfback and a creative/controlling 9 like Josh Hodgson or Cameron Smith.
Fullback and centre is where I think we need to spend money to have some strike weapons

Matterson, Mikaele, Garner and Twal are good young players that will probably improve and we have some OK forwards around them who may improve as well.

We are still stuck with serious salary cap problems and playing Brooks at 9 only makes them worse.

Brooks to 9 and Marshall/Reynolds in the halves wouldn't make or cap issues worse. If anything it may help.

Brooks is on 550k not 750k.

This article is not proof, but $550k would be very low for a halfback with his experience.

https://www.zerotackle.com/brooks-extends-stay-at-wests-tigers-38593/

"The deal is reportedly worth north of $3 million (for 4 years) and will see the the reigning Dally M Halfback of the Year remain a Tiger until the end of 2023."

He was before he signed again. Nowhere near worth $750 k
