"Sit down Smith, … be humble"

Or better still Clubber Lang from Rocky III: "you better get that look off your face before I knock it off".
Smith has led a charmed life in his era of RL, 30 years ago or anytime before that he would have been beaten senseless by the opposition forward pack. Grubs got sorted out pretty quickly in those days.

What are you talking about? back then they were all filthy grubs. Had Smith played in that era he would have owned it more than he owns this one.

The Refs would have told him to P….off in those days, he wouldn't have been able to run the game Like he does now, he'd have given away so many 10 metre penalties per game, would have loved to see how he went with Refs who actually refereed instead of trying to make friends with the players

I don't mind Smith. Some people say he's grubby but look at all hookers. They all have a bit of niggle in them. If he played for the WTs we would all be saying he should be PM after he's finished NRL.
Some of my favioute players were nigglers. Look at Tommy R. Smith only has 10% of Tommys niggle.
I've got quite a calm nature so when I played I was a niggler, hoping some one hit me. I always had a great game if I was fired up. Smith is not a big guy and punches well above his weight.

Tommy wasn't a niggler, He simply told the opposition what he was going to do to them, and then for the rest of the game he did it. Nothing sneaky about Tom.

Never really understood the hatred for him tbh.

It's not hard to explain. Getting caught red-handed cheating and then having the gall and arrogance to play the victim card is the primary thing that really gives me the splats about the dog. Him along with Slater, Inglis and a 3rd bloke who was never named publicly should of been rubbed out of the game for good, it was no innocent mistake.

Top that off with his scabby tactics of chicken wing tackles, wrenching blokes knees and ankles, cannonball tackles, crusher tackles etc that were not really a common part of the game before he himself implemented these low acts.
So there you have a crap human being and undisputed grubby player, those would be the main reasons for the hatred of Smith I would think. The fact that he is a protected species amongst referee's is just the cherry on top.
Good player no doubt, but the god-like status that some imbeciles bestow upon him is embarrassing.

Spot on with all you have said. Add to that arguing about a penalty for 10 mins while a bloke lay on the ground struggling to breathe with a possible spinal injury.

Agree 100% and I'll raise it to the next level. Being a NSW supporter living in Brisbane, I have long argued that the dominance QLD has enjoyed since 2006 was formed on the back of Melbourne Storm club combinations which were established by rorting the salary cap. More so since 2008 when Billy Slater was included with Inglis, Smith and Folau.

Even if it's not entirely true, it makes Queenslanders angry which is fun for everyone.
