Can we arrange a TPA?

Parramatta supporters group 1Eyed Eel is poised to make history after proposing to set up rugby league's first supporter-based third-party arrangement for one of the club's players.
The 1Eyed Eel forum, an online gathering place for supporters to discuss all things blue and gold, has such a following that, for much of its history, it has boasted greater traffic numbers than the official parraeels.com.au website.
The latest venture, called the 1Eyed Eel Coterie, will provide its members with a more direct means to contribute to the team if the NRL rubber-stamps the revolutionary concept.

The idea is for a supporter-run company to be formed, with various levels of membership depending on the financial contributions made. 1Eyed Eel Coterie members would then choose a player to sponsor via a registered TPA, which would require the player to provide value back to the group via means such as promotional appearances or website blogs.
Within hours of the idea being floated, dozens of members had registered their interest, with combined pledges topping $10,000.
Parramatta are supporting the initiative and will provide regulatory advice to ensure compliance with the NRL, but will have no say on the player chosen or on the running of the group. It is understood former NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert, who has been engaged by the Eels to sort through a myriad of issues, is available to ensure compliance with the salary cap and head office directives.
Rather than topping up the salary of a superstar such as Manly recruit Kieran Foran, it's likely the first player sponsored will be a lower-profile fan favourite who would otherwise struggle to garner interest from corporate Australia. However, the concept is still in the embryonic stages and those details will be thrashed out as members begin signing up.
The 1Eyed Eel Coterie comes at an interesting time for the game. Former Melbourne chief executive Mark Evans has been engaged by the NRL on a consultancy basis and one of his jurisdictions is reviewing the controversial TPA system. The NRL is looking to make TPAs simpler - the fact there are currently five types of TPA only adds to the confusion.
It's argued the salary cap isn't a genuinely level playing field because some clubs are more capable of generating TPAs than others. We're hearing one option being considered is publishing the number and financial total of each club's TPAs so that the system is more transparent.

Correct me if I am wrong but previously because Meriton were a major sponsor any TPA involving them would have gone under the cap, but now they aren't major sponsor any 3rd party payments from them are NOT included in the cap?

Would be interesting to see how this relates to forum politics on their online board, possibly those contributors feeling somewhat superior somewhat to those non contributors…plus theres varying levels of contributions...I wonder if theyre publicised?

Is their forum harmonious, all in agreeance? Seems such an odd thing, like tasting a colour...hard to imagine.

I doubt we'd even be able to agree on a player here...and while others here may have heard of the word 'coterie'...I had to google it.
Well played to them

Parra intend to give their money to a lower-paid fan favourite, so I think Lovett is the obvious choice.

Tedesco would probably get ours, count me in but I won't be able to commit for another 1-2 years as I don't currently have a job.

If Harry Triguboff was serious about helping his beloved Tigers become a force again then he would be putting his hand in his very deep pockets and splashing some cash around on TPA's. It would cost him a lot less then buying the whole club and then we could get a couple of top shelf players to complement the young guys. Just my opinion though , i know if i had his type of cash thats exactly what i would be doing so i can actually start enjoying watching the team go around again.

The stock markets have been going very bad lately. Harry is probably considering whether Wests Tigers are a better investment.

Ummmm, I've floated this topic twice (at length) on these forums. Neither time was it met with much interest. I also started a thread on this exact thing probably a year ago (but can't find the thread for reference).
Here was a thread where it was discussed:

I felt so passionately about this I even contacted the NRL. I called NRL HQ and asked for contact details of the auditor team. They put me through to the "auditing team" which, I later discovered was in fact not who they said it was but an NRL client liaison, who handled enquiries on any and all matters. I called again and asked to find out who the auditor was and if I may make a direct enquiry. This time they gave me an email address for the auditor before again passing me through to the same client liaison's voicemail.

In the email I asked: "Is it the position of the NRL / NRL Auditor that not one single third party agreement made between a corporate entity and a player is contingent upon the player playing for a particular club?"

I got a response. But alas it was from the very same client liaison. Crikey…... Anyway in his response he never directly answered any questions. It was all ust fluff. I replied to his response, seeking clarification and asked for the email address of the auditing committee who might be better equipped to answer my query. I was ignored.

I do find it ironic that an entity that has absolutely no transparency has the gall to proclaim an "integrity unit".

Anyway, good luck to Parramatta. It takes a lot of thought, diplomacy and administrative planning so kudos to them. I am really keen to see how this plays out and, if it is positive I sincerely hope that they cause a domino effect and we follow suit (and create a larger pool of funds so that by the time Israel Folau is available we snap him up....that is of course, if the stakeholder majority agrees........).

It's an interesting initiative but the amounts involved are futile. You'd be lucky if 50% of the amount pledged is honoured. So of the remaining $5000 that's actually raised, that gives a player on a 35% marginal tax rate the princely sum of $3,250 after tax! Hardly an incentive for a guy to commit to a club.

Funny you say that.

As soon as the announced he was trying to step back from major sponsorship I thought the same thing.

But it must be wrong, our club have never used this much common sense. Lol

Tbh, I have no interest in giving my money to a player. The club will get my money but never a player.

It's ridiculous that the fans of the 'lesser' clubs have to resort to this just to keep a player. Says a lot about the inequality of the whole damn system! What happened to Parra's supposed millionaire backers? Why can't they just open their wallets and arrange the TPAs? And you too Harry - stop talking takeover, beloved Balmain blah, blah and just open your bloody wallet. I'm sure between them all they could save a whole third world nation, but nah let's just get the plebs to fork it all out to save their teams from oblivion. Capitalism sucks! :rant

TPA's of this nature are supposed to be between the player and the third party…they are not supposed to induce or convince a player to remain or sign with a Club for it to remain Cap exempt....In fact when a player is giving his time to the sponsor they can not be in Club gear...think Billy Slater when he promotes bananas.....

They are portable and go with the Player....I would LMAO if the Parra fans TPA contract was with say Hopa and he signed with the Storm...

There is the option to sponsor the player or position ala Big Keithy brought to you by the Sleeping Giant...that Monies would go directly to the Club...
