Canterbury Bulldogs coach Des Hasler to implement major shake-up of club football department

Why does the great Club that is geographically local have the same drive? It is the demography. Balmain are rich, latte-sipping basket-weavers to sum it up. My brother lives there and set up a new junior soccer league there yonks ago - he had never played soccer in his life but wanted a safer game for his son.

Bulldog territory are Lebo and Islander migrants - good fertile ground where footie gives them pride, an identity and a better chance in life etc.. they are more rough and tumble than nimby cotton-woolers of harbourside mansions. They even rumble the cops in Bulldog territory. Stereo-typing of course. Another mob in Bulldog territory also like to give the pokies a thrashing that also helps.

What's the demography like in Byron Bay?

Well just last week the Greens won the local govt elections and footie is not one of their strong suites. They are accused of sabotaging playing fields at Ocean Shores, but they did have built a $8M sports complex at Byron with those fed govt stimulus funds. Not many people watch the local games though I enjoy them, only 6 bucks to enter. They did not go well this year. Their club is threadbare compare to Sydney's mega clubs.

We even have silly AFL up here now, I feel like spraying sissies on the their big sign coming into town.

I think RL players and supporters here are mostly tradesmen.

The Bulldogs are no better or worse than we are. They are only as goods as the people representing them at the time and their results on the field.

They have had off field dramas bigger than ours, club leadership issues and player issues in the past.

Their fans are no more passionate than we are!

Listening to the radio yesterday they were arguing about Hasler and weather or not he still has what it takes? I think with a team and pack like that they expected to be higher up the ladder. Also the Hoppa business maybe adding to the dramas. So review and maybe a clean out is requried?

Totally agree.

SBW walking out on his contract, points deducted for salary cap, the Coffs Harbour incident, the Mad Monday abuse of a female reporter, the issue with violence at matches, the bottle-throwing at Belmore etc.

Bulldogs have tonnes of off-field issues, probably worse in potential criminality than the Tigers, but they have more money than Tigers and don't have to deal with historical merger issues. They have better on-field results, but they spend a lot more on football operations than Tigers do, and actually despite reaching GFs have not won a premiership more recently than us.

This story is just Dessie doing a clear-out to save his own skin, but lucky for Des he is very well paid and respected, so he doesn't have the same media scrutiny as a nobody novice like JT.

Good to see bubbling enthusiasm from our forumers

I was enthusiastic about this season, until Farah was dropped. We didn't turn up in 2/3 do-or-die games, yet Farah was the problem :roll We have one of the youngest teams in the comp yet our most experienced campaigner gets dropped. Makes sense :bash It is always so easy to place the blame on one player.

I think with hindsight this was a really poor decision and I think it's going to be a poor decision for next season as well.

It wasn't just the on-field performances that were affected as well. It made us look like morons.

That's the key Des is respected, but he has earnt the respect!

JT isn't there yet, I'm not that good a judge to decide if he will make it or not but I do know enough to say that when you have a track record of success people take what you have to say seriously.

That then gets you the buy in from the players which makes leading them easier.

When you don't have a proven track record there is always doubt and inconsistent results.

If JT can't Improve next year, we need the same thing, a good clean out! And I mean early in the season if by week 5 we are not 3 wins from 5 or better then JT should go, a new coach in and he can set the platform for 2018\. Decide on who he keeps and starts the negotiations for new players in 2018.

Wouldn't it feel great if the Tigers one day come 7th and our fans and management turn around and say let's put a plan in to fix this failure?

We came ninth this year which is only two off Bulldogs. I believe we will improve in 2017 with an even greater improvement in 2018.

True….but we consider it somewhat a success and they consider it a fail

I definitely don't consider this season a success. There were some good moments but it's another year of underperformance.

I really doubt the club sees it as a success as well.

Sorry but this year was an atrocity. And I stopped watching half the games 3/4 through.

Eels deducated points, saints, horrible, roosters horrible, titans mediocre; manly horrible. What other teams I miss? Knights?

OMG some of you guys really baffle me. Like really content with 9th when the competition was one of the worst in history…

How about this it made the Tigers look bad and it also makes the Tigers look stupid now. Paying the SOO hooker $750k to play for another team.

The Wests Tigers look fine. Stupid would have been to hang on to a losing situation. $750k for him gone? Bargain!

X 2 (I'm just as baffled)

In a Competition where even if you win only approx. half your games you , still play in the Semis, it's too easy to accept a crook result,
The Semis should be back to 5 teams , as it was.
Then we have the genuine top teams fighting for the Premiership, without the also-rans.
The eight teams is only there for the League to get more TV revenue, and has nothing to do with the rewarding the top teams.
So they'll keep on padding out the semis. And people will , in a lot of cases, feel better when their average teams Make the semis
