Plus a few more, probably Aloiai, Reynolds, McQueen. Maybe the Huth. Depends if ET is fit and whether Twal or Huth will spell him.

And next week you'd think Fonua will be back too.

A few names I don't recognise but obviously there will be a couple of late boosts as Maguire trims the FG squad.

### Match: Magpies v Sea Eagles

Venue: Leichhardt Oval

**Magpies fly high in battle of the west**

Josh Reynolds didn't end up turning out for Western Suburbs, but the Magpies have still started their 2019 campaign in the best way possible with a convincing 23-4 victory over the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles at Leichhardt Oval.

As expected in their first game of the season, both sides spent the opening exchanges testing each other out, with the Magpies having the first opportunity to trouble the scorers, though couldn’t capitalize.

Blacktown took full advantage of their first sniff, with five-eighth Luke Metcalf slicing through the Wests right-hand defenders, racing away to score a brilliant individual try. Metcalf couldn’t convert his try leaving the visitors with a 4-0 lead.

Moments later Wests hit back through their five-eighth Tyson Gamble, who crashed over the stripe from close range. The try was converted by Gamble, giving his side a 6-4 lead.

Wests had a mountain of possession, throwing a lot at the Eagles, though they were more than ready for the task, scrambling to defend three try-scoring opportunities throughout the first-half, meaning they went into the sheds just two-points behind.

The heavy defensive load in the first stanza was starting to take a toll on Blacktown, with Wests play-maker Kauri Apuouri-Puketapu running in two quick tries shortly after the resumption, extending their lead to a 16-4.

Not only was the defensive load taking on Blacktown’s defence, it was also affecting their ability to hold the steeden. Hale’s men were only able to complete one of their first four sets, after returning from the sheds.

Wests again took full advantage of the Eagles misfortunes, scoring another four-pointer courtesy of Kane Mcquiggin. This made a comeback from the visitors seem near impossible, even with over fifteen minutes of play remaining.

Gamble put the icing on a solid team and individual performance moments before the full time hooter, booting a neat field goal to secure his side a 23-4 victory.

The Workers will shift their focus swiftly to their Round 2 clash against the North Sydney Bears at Lottoland, while the Magpies will look to keep the momentum going against the Warriors at Campbelltown.

My theory, that JR is on the nose with Madge is starting to stack up…I see JR taking up a SL contract or being shopped around before June 30

### [HIGHLIGHTS | Western Suburbs v Blacktown - Round 1](https://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2019/03/17/highlights–western-suburbs-v-blacktown---round-1/)

It was a fine start to the season for the Western Suburbs Magpies.

Nice to have highlights but that was some strangely poor editing. If they have the footage why show no build up play and just someone with a ball in hand diving over? eg gamble and mcguiggan tries.

Basically we controlled a poor game. Both teams were very average but we were definitely the better side. They made a lot of mistakes.
This team still lacks a halfback. Both Gamble and and the new 7 are very similar players. Runners who can kick occasionally, but neither are organisers.
Our starting pack was very average. Rochow was poor for the 25 mins he was on. Mcqueen offers little. Mcintyre had one good run in the second half but was otherwise quiet. Clark and the other starting prop were invisible. It was only when Ratu, Robson, and Miller came off the bench that we had more grunt.
Liddle tried a bit too much, going for a 40/20 and quick bursts up the middle with a short pass to a prop. Not wet weather footy.
Neither team passed the ball much so the outside backs didn't touch the ball much. Smith was solid at the back but not overly involved.
A grinding performance against a very poor team, but a win's a win and there'll be players dropping down from nrl squad next week

Smith wasn't overly involved hey - I mean he made 191 meters from 19 runs but hardly involved. Most of our players were shit yet we beat them comfortably in the wet. Jesus some people have no ability to do anything but whinge

Yeah, he wasn't overly involved. His kick returns were very good as shown in his stats, however he wasn't overly involved in other backline plays and could have hung around the middle sniffing for offloads more. Hence his low involvement. The two aren't mutually exclusive you know? He was solid but needs to do more to push for first grade. He's young and learning his trade.

And yes a lot of our players were quite average and a better opponent would have beaten us by 20+. You do realise that just because we won doesn't mean that we played well? Performance is of particular importance when playing wooden spoon candidates.

But hey as I said it's round one and combinations will improve and the roster will get stronger as other players get demoted/promoted. Good to start the season with a win absolutely but Hodgo will be the first to admit there's still plenty to work on.

I think it was a case of typical wet weather football with forwards hitting it up and no second phase. The centres and wingers didn’t get much ball which backs up what happened.
As for Smith I’m pretty sure he made a break after a push so I’d say he was sniffing around and he does look like he’s put on some size.
To me the standouts were Gamble Clark Robson Siolo Ratusomething and Smith
McQueen struggled
Liddle seemed to go the wrong way a few times or am I being a bit critical
I’d like to see Talau get a start sooner rather than later so he can get used to playing against men.
It’s early days and a win is a win 💪

full stats for the game

mcintyre really did a lot of work and had 6 tackle breaks in making 138 meters which is more then he usually does.

only the halves touched the ball more often then Smith despite his supposed lack of involvement

Mcqueen topped the post contact meters
