# Canterbury Cup Team Announcement: Round 4

**Western Suburbs Magpies Canterbury Cup Coach Brett Hodgson has named his side to take on Mounties RLFC for their Round 4 clash at Aubrey Keech Reserve this Sunday.**

Western Suburbs Magpies will be looking to take a victory after a last start defeat to the Bulldogs with Mounties out to continue their strong start to the year.

NRL squad members Dylan Smith, Tyson Gamble, Oliver Clark, Sam McIntyre and Robbie Rochow have once again been included in the squad, while Braden Robson starts again at hooker after scoring a hat-trick in last week's loss to the Bulldogs.

Goalkicking has been good and his defence is improved. The extra size he has put on has helped in this regard, he seems harder to put on the deck as well - there could be hope for him as a FG centre option - I certainly haven't been impressed with Jennings thus far.

If nothing else he has put his hand up as a bench utility option.
 
Don't know why we'd include Clark if he's out for the next month with his facial injury…

Give Ratu and Siolo more time and let Epere get some mins off the bench. The outside backs desperately need some players to drop down from NRL.
 
Is he strong enough to play lock ET is not adding much and his goal kicking would make a huge difference. What’s his conversion rate?
 
And the week from hell continues.

Thats a really poor result given first grade spots are up for grabs.

Something isnt quite right at this club.
 
Mounties blitz Magpies to move top of the table

Western Suburbs Magpies Canterbury Cup side were ambushed 52-6 by Mounties RLFC on Sunday afternoon at Aubrey Keech Reserve, handing the side their second loss in a row.

After a strong start to the season with two dominant victories and a disappointing defeat to the Bulldogs last weekend, Brett Hodgson’s side this week were unable to get on top of the home side, who moved to the top of the ladder as a result.

The hosts began the first half with a hard-hitting attack — blitzing past Western Suburbs to score four tries throughout the opening half of footy.

Tony Satini had Mounties in front early when he crossed after just three minutes, before Andre Niko made it two in quick succession with his first try of the day.

Bailey Simonsson bagged the first of his four tries in the 20th minute to make it 18-0 in favour of the home side, before another try late in the half to Reubenn Rennie ensured that Mounties would head to the half-time sheds with a commanding lead.

It didn't get any easier in the second half for the Magpies with Simonsson and Niko both crossing the line again, while Brendan O'Hagan also got in on the action — pushing the lead out to 36-0 with still 20 minutes remaining in the contest.

Simonsson, who was having some afternoon, took his personal tally to three tries as the lead pushed beyond 40 before Wests captain Kauri Aupouri finally broke the hosts' defence with a solo effort of his own eight minutes from full-time.

Mounties weren't quite done, though, with Simonsson make it four tries for himself and fifty points for the home side when he crashed over late in the contest.

After back-to-back defeats, Western Suburbs will look to bounce back in the winners circle next week when they take on the Penrith Panthers at Leichhardt Oval.

Mounties are Wests bogey team must be a Canberra thing..
 
Absolute disgrace.
I just don’t get why just about all of our lower grades continue to show rubbish year after year.
There must be something there that needs to be identified and fixed, and quickly.
The coaching group seems incapable to address this. Perhaps it’s that (in the juniors) we are spreading the talent across both Magpies and Balmain. In Canterbury cup …. I’m afraid it comes down to poor coaching as we have a fairly good and experienced roster that is playing dead.
 
You've got to look at it a bit closer than that. NSW Cup last year were front runners until they faded badly at the end. But we were on top for a fair while.

This season we won our first 2 games comfortably and were top, and then lost our next 2 games.

Mounties nearly always beat us too. They focus on huge players who at this level can dominate matches. Not a lot of them go on to play NRL, but some do, and focusing on size is a good way to win lower leagues.

This year in NSW Cup our outside backs are once again quite average. We have no centres, no organising halfback (yet) and few impact players. We should squeeze into the 8, but that's about it.

Hopefully Reynolds is going so well at NRL level that Benji strenghtens up reserves. Him and Gamble played together in Qld cup.
 
That's good to hear… He's a unit he has the potential to be a real weapon imo... GKing and defense a plus too
