Cap guns: Roosters reap recruitment rewards

SYDNEY ROOSTERS are now reaping the benefits of using only about 90 per cent of their salary cap last year.

Questions have been raised over the Roosters' ability to sign James Maloney, Sonny Bill Williams, Michael Jennings and now Luke O'Donnell, without going over the $5.8 million salary cap for this year.

But Roosters recruitment guru Peter O'Sullivan, who capped off a golden summer in the player market by extending Mitchell Pearce's contract for another four years, said the side's roster for this season was a result of good management.

''It's pretty simple - the salary cap went up and we had money to spend,'' O'Sullivan said.
**''The other thing is that we had a significant sum left over last year. We left some money up our sleeve and that obviously carries over and gives us extra spending this year.''**

The Sydney Roosters were in a better position to capitalise on the $800,000 increase in this year's salary cap than most clubs because they don't have many players with clauses in their contracts.

''We only have a small number of players who are on contracts that have to go up a certain percentage if the salary cap goes up,'' O'Sullivan said. ''Other clubs have quite a large number of players. All their higher-paid players are on those percentage clauses, so any increase in the cap isn't able to be taken advantage of.

''We didn't have the clauses that other clubs have got that chews up the cap, so we were able to spend it on our footy team.''

Back-ended deals are a nightmare for clubs to control, which is why some teams were inactive in the player market for this season. O'Sullivan said it wasn't a problem the Roosters had to worry about.

''Some other clubs have players on heavy back-ended deals that start to kick in this year - we don't,'' he said.

''What compounds their problem is that not only are they back-ended, but they are back-ended with a percentage increase.''

The Roosters have also parted ways with Braith Anasta, Mose Masoe, BJ Leilua and Brad Takairangi since the end of last year.

While O'Donnell's signature has raised a few eyebrows, O'Sullivan said the deal with the former North Queenslander didn't break the bank.

''Luke O'Donnell's not coming back for a king's ransom,'' he said.

''He's coming back for a chance to play in the NRL. The money he was on over there in the English Super League with Huddersfield, especially the way the dollar was, he was on half of what he left Australia on.

''He and his family were just homesick and really just came back for an opportunity to play in the NRL again. That's where we came into it.''

Under the new collective bargaining agreement about to be passed, the salary cap will increase by $400,000 a season for the next four years, plus an additional $50,000 a year in marquee player allowances.

While O'Sullivan jokingly said he was now in a position to take a six-month holiday after retaining and signing the club's priorities, he has turned his attention to rookie winger Daniel Tupou, who is in the final stages of finalising a contract extension.

Yep they paid maloney 75% last season while he was a warrior

I remember WTs always banging on about not spending their cap, like it was a hindrance

Some clubs know how to use it, some - like us - dont

Is this the first time that clubs have been allowed to spend what they were under the cap last year on the next year's cap? What's the difference with Parra wanting to be allowed to go over the cap this year so they could sign Folau & then being under the 2014 cap by the same amount they were over in 2013?

On MMM this morining, Matty Johns said that because the Warriors did the Roosters a favour & let Maloney leave early, the Roosters were able to use some of their 2012 cap towards his 2013 contract. Seems Dodgy as & I can't believe the NRL would set a precedent like this.

Yeh I heard that this morning and I heard the same on Gibbsy & Brandys show about a week or so ago…dunno how long this has been going on for but apparently its legit,....the Folau one is baffling....though I do see the difference....I think theyre worried about players switching codes then coming back to NRL on super trumped up deals compared to when they left

Ink, you bring up a good point in your first post about clubs managing their cap better now this precedent has been set. There were reports in the media that Parra were roughly 100K under this year's cap when they were trying to sign Folau & that's before the 2013 salary cap went up & was finally agreed upon recently. So unless they need to sign another player this year through injuries, they will more than likely use the amount of cap that they are under this year on their 2014 cap.

The biggest issue in all of this is we don't know how much of O'Donnell and Jennings contracts have been subsidised by their former clubs

Take Anasta and Perrett out and their is probably close to 550 -600 k from their salary cap and that would go close to covering SBW contract

Don't panic the roosters won't win the premiership It takes time to mold a champion side and SBW and O'donnell are one at the Roosters for a season

They have lots of penalty magnets as well They will be the most penalised side in the NRL next season you watch

One's things for certain Happy, their recruitment officer was quoted as saying they had some of their 2012 cap that was rolled over & which gave them extra spending this year.
Matty Johns also said that a board member from Penrith (I'm assuming he was refering to Brandy?) told him Jennings would of been on 700K this year had he stayed at the Panthers & all they were paying towards his contract this year at the Roosters was 100K, which he said was the sticking point in the club releasing him.

P.S Good to see you now have a avator pic, :righton: looks good mate.

Thanks WT4L thanks to the wife ,'Kul and Ink for the Avatar

Forgive me , but I wouldn't trust a word that came our of O'Sullivans mouth seeing he was involved with the Storm salary cap dramas

 Fair play mate.
It wouldn't matter if it was our club that pulled something like this, I would still feel the same & something about it just doesn't sit right with me. I can't see what benefit the Warriors would of got or why they would do the Rooster's a favor by letting Maloney go to them earlier so they could manipulate the cap.

Link to the audio from yesterday's convo.

The subject of the Sydney Roosters' salary cap got Triple M Sydney's Grill Team fired up this morning.

Matty Johns issued a 'Please Explain' to Gus Worland, the Chooks number one fan, over how it's possible for the Roosters to fit so many star players under the $5.8m salary cap.

"My issue is the Roosters have been able to sign Luke O'Donnell because the Warriors did them a favour last year," Matty told Gus.

"They released James Maloney early and some of that money went on the Roosters salary cap for last year.

"That's fair enough but explain to me again why Parramatta couldn't sign Israel Folau? I would love to hear what Ricky Stuart's got to say about this," he added.

Gus hit back agreeing that Israel Folau should be playing NRL but added "don't throw my club under the bus when you don't have all the facts."

I would have thought that the only way a former club would have to pay some of a player's salary for his new club would be if they sacked him, not if the player requested a release and it was granted? I can't figure it out
