To be honest, I'm disappointed.
Whilst not a sheens basher, I was looking forward to the injection of fresh energy and ideas that a new coach, namely Peter Gentle, would bring.

At the same time it's fitting and pleasing to note that Sheens does bring many strong attributes to this club, most importantly stability. We should never disregard that.

3 years is too long though. 2 years would have been better.

I hope that part of the deal involes Gentle starting to get more say/control over the next few seasons before taking over

good post

i dont hate sheens at all, and i dont for a second think he isnt a good coach

i just think he has become very stale and that the players are TOO ''matey'' with him. guys like gibbs, fulton, galloway and even farah are all now senior players and imo havent reached the heights they should have. this isnt entirely sheens fault however anyone who has worked for the same company for 10+ years knows you get relaxed and sometimes the only way to get the enthusiasm back is a big change.

someone completely new in to kick the complacency out of the joint is very much needed imo

i also have no doubts sheens could go on to another club and be a great success, however i have my concerns if he can get the best out of the current playing group

If you read what the players are saying that Tim is always changing as a coach and his style of coaching and constantly reinventing himself . If you have a coach who is prepared to change with the game and learn through the game as Sheens , Bennett and Smith obviously have we don't need change . Look at Bennett 19 years at a club and went through 2 generations of players . Just be thankful we still have one of the best coaches in the comp Warts and all as people say we all may not agree with every decision he makes but you can't deny he is the best fit at this stage and is likely to bring us more success with a bit of luck

yep like your statement nothing sensible in that and for the boring troll well you win hands down…shame you cannot debate without being personal only highlights your iq or lack of :crazy

Tigers05 - I think that sometimes anger that should be directed at yourself is somehow directed at me. Maybe you should change your username.

Give it a rest fellas. The last 20 odd posts have a dab of sensible comment from both sides of the fence but the majority of it is just people slagging each other off…

Let's all look forward to this weekends game knowing that the news at the very least should stabilise the team a little.

Sheens stays with Tigers to finish the job
Joe Barton

AAP

Fresh from inking a new deal that will tie him to the Wests Tigers until the end of 2014, Tim Sheens revealed that he still has some unfinished business at the club.

Sheens knocked back a huge offer to return to Penrith, reportedly worth $2 million over four years, in favour of a three-year deal with the Tigers and he admitted a big factor behind his decision to stay was the impressive young group of players coming through.

Now in his ninth season at the club, Sheens guided the Tigers to the 2005 premiership with a talented team built around young stars headed by Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah, both of whom remain key figures.

"I'm really pleased with my decision, I have a lot of unfinished business here which I'm looking forward to tackling," the Australian coach said in a statement.

Club chief executive Stephen Humphreys admitted he felt some relief: "We're very pleased of course, but I don't mind admitting I'm a little relieved as well," Humphreys told AAP.

"At the end of the day Tim had a few things to way up.

"We're all pleased he's decided to stay at Wests Tigers and complete some of the business that he's been heavily involved in to date.

"I know he's very keen to continue to develop the exciting young talent coming into the side and that will emerge for the next year or two in first grade.

"I know that was a motivating factor for him to stay. He's worked closely with the more senior players in this group for a few years too, so he wants to see the results of that as well."

Humphreys said the fact Penrith had weighed in with a hefty offer eventually worked in the Tigers' favour.

"Clearly the Penrith offer was a very tempting one, both in financial terms and in it's length of term," he added.

"It was an offer that certainly made him stop and have a think about it.

"But in hindsight it was probably welcome (by Wests Tigers) in some respects, sometimes you need a tangible alternative to realise what's important to you and help you weigh up what you want."

Humphreys also confirmed that Sheens would see out all three years as coach - contrary to reports which suggested the veteran mentor would be moved towards a coaching director role.

"The reports (that he would be considered as a coaching director in this contract) were off-the mark," Humphreys said.

"I can see Tim fulfilling such a role in the future of course, but right now he's just too effective as an NRL coach to take him away from that."

Great peace and quite on the Sheens front for the next 3 years at least!…I see at least 1 premiership during the next 3 years...

3 years is too long. signing him until the end of 2012 would have been enough for now, and then wait how we go this year before deciding if we want him for longer. oh well

Well done Tigers, I for one are glad the Mr Sheens is staying put. As bizarre as some of his selections may be, as strange as some of his interchange methods are, I wouldnt swap him for anyone. GO THE TIGERS!!!!

Yep - the sheens/moltzen haters look dumber than they usually do now.

We've got the genius pulling the strings and the moltz man at the back.

Good times !

How could you be happy about Moltzen playing fullback    He doesn't even do the basics right. He doesn't run hard on kick returns and sometimes passes it to the winger who is in a worse position than he is. And this is coming from someone who actually likes Moltzen, but he just isn't a fullback. I don't blame Sheens for trying him at fullback last year but sometimes these experiments go on for too long when it isn't working.
