Ch9: Sheens to stay for 3 more years

LOVE THIS DECISION!

Thank you Tim! I look forward to the next few years at the right end of the top 8\. No way anyone can compare 2006-2009 to what we have now.

Sheens turned this club around, we were also rans for nearly 15 years straight. What Tim has built is something that cannot be bought.

Yep - the sheens/moltzen haters look dumber than they usually do now.

We've got the genius pulling the strings and the moltz man at the back.

Good times !

How could you be happy about Moltzen playing fullback    He doesn't even do the basics right. He doesn't run hard on kick returns and sometimes passes it to the winger who is in a worse position than he is. And this is coming from someone who actually likes Moltzen, but he just isn't a fullback. I don't blame Sheens for trying him at fullback last year but sometimes these experiments go on for too long when it isn't working.

Exactly,we wont win squat with with Tim (no guts Moltzen) at the back.

Quite unbelievable..a 12 year gig in total based on half a dozen or so good games in both 2005 &2010.
At 60,the 2 yr term was always going to be an issue as he may have to back himself,so we rolled over with three.Appreciate Humphries perspective, but Im very disappointed
My crystal ball can see 2014 Sheenspin now…..
"Its now 2014 & With Ellis & Lote now gone, we need to go thru an important rebuilding period & its critical we have an experienced & stable hand at the helm such as ...well... myself .It mite take a little time..maybe another 3 or 4 years.Dont worry about missing the finals the past three years..it was just bad luck, refs decisions & injuries that cost us.Im gearing Tigers to win 2017.Blah,blah,blah for the umpteenth time"
Meanwhile, the players responded in their usual way by sleeping thru it all..
Sheens should buy himself a lottery ticket...hang on,he's just won it!

All in all i think the right decision has been made.
With the squad we have for the next couple of seasons, which was developed by Sheens & staff alone we should win a premiership & Sheens deserves to be there for that sucsess.
Now that he is staying this current playing group can now focus on the job ahead without distraction.

THANKS FOR STAYING TIM!!!! :righton: THIS FORUM WILL NEVER BE DULL WHILE YOUR AROUND

Three-year deal convinces Sheens to stay
Glenn Jackson, Greg Prichard
April 30, 2011

TIM SHEENS sat down in Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys's office mid-afternoon yesterday, and declared that instead of the challenge of winning premierships at three different clubs, he wanted the challenge of longevity. He asked Humphreys for an extra year on his deal and got one, and Sheens will now coach the club into a 12th season.

Sheens yesterday knocked back a more lucrative, and longer-term deal with Penrith to remain at the Tigers. He signed a three-year deal, managing to squeeze an extra year out of the club during the frantic final negotiations.

''The greatest challenge for a coach is longevity,'' Humphreys said last night. ''There's no question, if it was about money, he would have gone. And no one would have begrudged him. He's staying for the challenge. He's invested a lot in his playing group, and he sees them as a work in progress. He wants to get the job done with them. It's a tremendous challenge to him, to continue to find ways to motivate him and the team.''

The Herald understands Penrith have already begun the process to settle on their next pick now Sheens has decided to stay put, but former St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown will not be considered. Recent speculation that Brown, who is coaching Huddersfield in England, was in the frame as a possibility is apparently off the mark.

There are a number of coaches who may be considered, including Royce Simmons, who, like Sheens, played for the Panthers and began his coaching career there, and Steve Folkes. Simmons assisted Sheens at the Tigers before taking over at English club St Helens this year. Folkes coached Canterbury to a premiership in 2004, and currently assists Sheens.

But those most likely to be seriously considered are former Sydney Roosters and Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart, who will coach NSW this year, and Newcastle coach Rick Stone, who has already lost his job to master coach Wayne Bennett after this year.

Stuart coached Sydney Roosters to a premiership in 2002\. His trademark of building a tight defence is something the Panthers could use, and he is keen to return to the NRL. Stone has the Knights firing early this season. They flogged the Panthers 42-8 in round one at Centrebet Stadium, and the clinical manner in which Newcastle dissected the opposition left an impression on influential people at Penrith.

Sheens informed a number of his players about the new deal after stepping out of Humphreys's office. ''He told me, 'You're going to have to put up with me for another couple of years','' star five-eighth Benji Marshall said. ''I said, 'Yeah, you'll have to put up with me.' It's such a relief though.''

Declaring Sheens in the class of Wayne Bennett, Humphreys said he and the coach were relieved with the new deal. ''He provides a wealth of experience and stability as well, that we think is very important at the club,'' Humphreys said.

''It's fair to say he's very relieved to have it sorted. He's very pleased to be able to continue to work with our squad over the next three years. We're confident that Tim will get the football team to some success over the next few years, and continue to lay a platform for many years to come.''

It is understood Sheens secured a little more money but was more intent on getting the security of another year on the deal. The Tigers had been expecting Sheens to accept a two-year offer from the club until the Panthers entered the picture.

''It was never really about money,'' Humphreys said. ''It was more about what was the right thing for Tim, and the right thing for Wests Tigers.''

**Humphreys admitted there would be some elements of the club's supporter base who would criticise the new deal. ''For us it's not about public perception,'' he said. ''In my view, the overwhelming majority of Wests Tigers fans are Tim Sheens fans. The vast majority of fans will be very pleased with the news. There's a faction who are not fans of Tim, but I'm not one of them. Tim continues to keep it fresh, and reinvigorate himself and the way he coaches.''**

Penrith chairman Don Feltis was philosophical about missing out on Sheens, saying: ''It was always going to be a huge task to convince Tim to leave such a successful club as Wests Tigers. We haven't been able to do that, and Panthers respect the decision he has made. We convey our best wishes to him and Wests Tigers.

''We will now continue with our strategy to deliver an outstanding coach to our club and the Penrith district - and we will do that.''

Tim Sheens re-signs with Wests Tigers NRL club

TIM Sheens last night turned his back on a $2.5 million deal from Penrith to remain a Tiger until the end of 2014.

Sheens was strongly tipped to join the Penrith Panthers, but an 11th-hour decision from Wests Tigers powerbrokers to extend their offer from two to three seasons secured the game's most capped coach. The $1.3 million deal was finalised at a meeting with Tigers chairman David Trodden and CEO Stephen Humphreys.

Tigers captain Robbie Farah said: "This is great for the club.

"When Tim's name came up on the phone, I thought he was ringing me to say he was going, so obviously I'm relieved. He told me he had unfinished business at the Tigers and that he wanted to win another premiership here.

"Up until he had heard about the big offer from Penrith it had not been a distraction, but we had kind of been keep in the dark and it was hard to know what was going to happen."

Both Humphreys and Trodden had previously given Sheens a 5pm deadline to make a call on his future, and it's believed the 60-year-old Australian coach wanted more time with next week's Test against the Kiwi looming.

The Daily Telegraph also understands Sheens asked Trodden to extend the club's current offer from two to four years, which the Panthers had already guaranteed.

Having waited for an answer since his board ratified the Sheens offer on April 6, Trodden instead opted for a middle ground of three years that satisfied both camps.

Wests Tigers' original offer was for two years as head coach, with a two-year option in Sheens' favour to stay on as coaching director.

Sheens stood to earn $410,000-a-season as head coach, with his salary halved if he chose to remain - making Penrith's offer worth almost double as much.

The value of Wests Tigers' new deal is not known, but there were reports last night the club had upped the money to match Penrith's overtures.

"It's a really good outcome for both Tim and Wests Tigers," Humphreys said.

"It gives us some real stability for the next three years and we are confident Tim will make the club succesful."

**With many at the club resigned to losing Sheens after the magnitude of Penrith's offer was revealed, Tigers insiders had already began preparing to aproach NSW coach Ricky Stuart to lead the joint venture next season.**

But Stuart is now expected to be a target of the Panthers, who are clearly on the prowl for an experienced premiership winner to replace Matt Elliott. Nathan Brown and Mick Potter, both coaching in the UK Superleague, have also been mentioned as possible candidates.

Tigers players were unaware of Sheens' decision until about 6pm, when he began phoning senior stars to announce the news.

It comes as a huge boost for talismanic playmaker Benji Marshall, who has repeatedly spoken of his close relationship with Sheens.

'Send in the clowns…. don't worry they're here....

Rick Stuart!?!?!?!?! :wtf
So Massoud and the DT are on the money today?

Usually they dont have a clue….according to most.

Some days they do, some they dont - funny that eh?

I'm glad that this dilemma has been resolved quickly I believe that we can now go on an at least win the game against the Raiders tomorrow.
Now that Tim Sheens has been re-signed please let us all support and get behind him, and hopefully we can have a great season.

Agreed tigress and other comments which are positive in this forum.

IMO Although Sheens has had and is still having issues in getting consistency, overall he has done well in bringing some success to this (at times difficult) marriage. Have a good look around you and you will find most clubs struggle during some period of the year and particularly when injuries hit (like we have this year).
He has assembled a good team of professional coaches and players which should bring benefits in coming years.

People … its only a game. You would get pretty bored if you win all the time. Life is a challenge with ups and downs which we all enjoy .... even if we don't admit to it.

I have enough ups and downs in my life already - would never get bored if we won all the time.
Love to break the Dragons 11 in a row

Great Outcome ….... congratulations to Stephen and his board on securing a really good result.

Onwards and upwards from here

In the days of Salary cap and 6 tackle rule you will NEVER see that again . But it would be a nice thought though .

Dam right. The four tackle rule, now six tackles, was brought in specifically to stop St. George. The Dragons used to get the ball and then never let it go until they scored. It became very boring football. The rule was introduced in 1966 and in 1967 the run of 11 straight St George premierships ended, never to be repeated.

Why inst it good??? If we go that penalty like we should have for Jeremy Smith kneeing Lote Tuquiri in the back or Chris Heighington picks up the ball against the chooks we would have at least made the grand final or won it, because if we played the chooks we would have beaten them on there display in the grand final. I know it doesnt count for much now, but, you dont throw the baby out with the bath water do you!!
