Lived in China for a long long time. Id guess I had 10-15 Luna new years there over the years.

Its the be all and end all in Chinese culture. The entire country shuts down for 2 weeks. The first week is very structured spent visiting family and in-laws on certain days, the last week is usually a piss up with friends that are home visiting their families. Then back to 15hr days earning $100 a week for the next 50 weeks to pay for the next Luna new year.

I know China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines (most if not all of SE Asia) celebrate it. Pretty much wherever there is a large Chinese population.

I returned from Bali this week, the place is saturated with hanging lanterns. They are all in as well.
