TODD Payten can't remember the year, but he remembers the story.
>
It's a tale about his Wests Tigers teammate Chris Heighington and what it takes to be an NRL player.
>
"When the bushfires were on a few years back, he was up at the central coast," Payten said.
>
"The roads were closed. In order to get to training, he caught the ferry, the bus and two trains. We give him a bit of ribbing about that.
>
"(Coach) Tim Sheens tells the story to show what it takes to be a first grader. It was a pre-season run. He could have rung up and said he couldn't make it."
>
Anyone who knows Heighington will tell you that's not his style. He doesn't take short-cuts and he doesn't make excuses.
>
He works as hard off the field as he does on it.
>
"He doesn't leave any stone unturned," Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell said.
>
"A lot of kids these days have so much natural ability but they're never going to make it because they don't have the discipline.
>
"He has it in spades."
>
Tomorrow's game against Parramatta is testament to that. Heighington will make his 150th first grade appearance at Parramatta Stadium.
>
In a side littered with stars, you could argue no one has been as consistent this season as the 28-year-old backrower.
>
"He's probably not the flashiest bloke around, but he gets the job done," Tigers legend Steve Roach said.
>
"The biggest thing for any forward is to be consistent. I reckon every time the Tigers go out you know what you're going to get from Chris Heighington.
>
"He is just a great professional. He goes about his business and doesn't make much noise. He just goes out there and does it."
>
While Heighington keeps his thoughts to himself, others are happy to push his barrow. Earlier this year, Sheens mentioned him as a potential State of Origin player. NSW selectors thought otherwise.
>
Their loss could be England's gain. The Lions coach Steve McNamara is due in Australia next week and one of his first meetings is likely to be with Heighington, who is eligible for England through his parentage.
>
"He's certainly one of our most consistent players," Payten said.
>
"He's been like that for the last three years. He's exactly what NSW needs. When they talk about passion and Queensland, Heighington is like that in everything he does.
>
"I know he's talking about playing for England. If he does, that's going to be a big loss for NSW and Australia.
>
"No one deserves his 150th game to be a win more than him."
>
Representative football, however, will take a backseat tomorrow as the Tigers attempt to maintain their top four aspirations against the Eels at a sold-out Parramatta Stadium.
>
A win would almost certainly guarantee the club a home final, something the entire club has coveted for five long years.
>
It would also exact some revenge for last season, when the Eels knocked the Tigers out of finals contention. The Tigers haven't forgotten that defeat.
>
Nor have they forgotten the last time they played finals football in 2005 when the club won its maiden premiership.
>
Heighington was a part of that side and, if the Tigers have their way, he will remain a part of the club for years to come.
>
**Although off contract at the end of next year, the club is ready to sign him to a long-term deal, warding off the approaches of the fledgling Central Coast franchise.\
\
"I would love to be a Tiger for life," Heighington said.**
>
"I have next year but hopefully I can stay a couple more years. I love the joint."
