Chris Lawrence

Sheens was what made him a reserve Australian centre.

Had 2 good seasons, nothing since.

Well maybe it was like 5% Sheens. It was 95% "the natural ability he had before a horrific injury, from which he has never - and, it appears increasingly likely, never will - fully recovered".

I have said it before Lawrence's career ended when he did his hip , nothing is going to change that these things happen and I,m sure he realises this .

Amen to that. It amazes me how people blame his effort or whatever. It's the injury, pure and simple.

We might as well give him some of this season given the "he's back to full fitness" line being pushed before the season started, and the fact we're apparently going to be terrible anyway - might as well find out if there is anything there. But if he isn't better than he was last year I don't blame the guy; instead it's another black mark on the coaching staff for not realising what they've got.

I thought he played O.k, He got no quality service, & i thought he tackled well. There were others who played a lot worse then him.

A round one loss and the hatetrain starts…..........

It's no hatetrain at all. It has been for quite some time now that Lawrence is so obviously no longer first grade material. The sad fact we have to accept is that Lawrence will not be first grade standard in future. We perservered with Benji when he reached the same point, playing him out of form in first grade for at least another two years. Clearly this was a mistake but unfortunately for West Tigers the same mistake is being duplicated with Lawrence. The same duplication is also being played out with Braith Anasta.

He's played a lot worse and still held his position. The last time he was playing good footy was when the team created room out wide so he could hit a gap or get one-on-one with some steam up. I think he can still do that when given the opportunity but sadly his days of brilliance seem to be over.

He'll keep his spot in the team because he is a senior player on a big contract but for how long that is a good idea remains to be seen. When a Nofu or Simona start to miss out because of that I will question it.

I thought Lawrence played well today with limited opportunities. He made 27 tackles without missing any. He didn't get much chance in attack but didn't do anything wrong and if Patterson stopped throwing balls forward he would have had something top run onto. I agree his last 2 years were poor driven by injury but today was a solid start to the season.

Just because we loose in the last 15 minutes of a game doesen't mean every single player was horrible and deserves to be dropped

Well said.

There were about 4 players that do not deserve selection next week. Most of the tackle breaks came from these players.

Farah, Thompson, Patterson and Anasta.

Potter needs to give more game time to Sue, Tapow and Gavat.

I actually thought Thompson was better than most of the forwards yesterday. The other 3 you mentioned were poor. But Gavat wasn't much chop either. The only real standout for me was Tapau and Woods was O.K.

Such a poor game to make any judgement on Chris, good or bad. The ball hardly went to the left and when it did it was either early in the game with Teddy sweeping around cutting Lawrence out, or it was later when he received the ball with no room. The fact he didnt miss a tackle is a good sign and enough to suggest he is a chance of being good this year.

Chris' demise saddens me so much, every game I show up hoping to see a glimpse of the old Chris. But it never eventuates, that hip injury destroyed him.

True. Would be good to see him in a bit of space this weekend just to see if he has recovered all of his pace now that he is fully fit.

Good call KS.

The dude has clearly struggled with injuries for previous seasons. But this year he's had a full pre-season, interrupted this week from the boils outbreak. After 80 mins when we get done by 20, how can anyone hope to assess his fitness / form in 2014?

Pure madness some of the sentiments in this thread, this is a brand new season and everyone gets a clean slate. You can't write off or lock in any player or any team after 1 round.

im certainly not giving up on him just yet. maybe i am just kidding myself that he can get back to how he used to be, but there is still a chance. he is still pretty young (26 is he?) so hopefully his body isnt too old…

i would love to know exactly who was calling the shots in attack on sunday and just what those calls were. it seemed to be fantastic for the first try, and then just went back to the horrible 'turn in to a forward running straight at the defence' for the rest of the game?

Lawrence made a living off straight line power running and speed. It's no surprise that when he lost speed he lost effectiveness. It was his only attribute really. For a while he had a decent combo with Tuqiri but even then he threw Lote plenty of howlers. He's not a great ball player and now that he's lost pace he's also lost the ability to bust the line and keep balance.

"Not a great ball player", true statement which just makes the fact that Sheens would play him at 5/8 even funnier

Defensively , that was his best game in a long time

But he spent a lot of time defending almost as a back rower

He was 4 in much of the time and the only time he defended as a conventional centre was from scrums

he also ran a great line to almost a try but was called back for a forward pass.

Cant judge him on one game. Just see how he goes with more room and whether he can chase down other speedsters

Two years ago he created space, since then, all we ever here is he's not getting any. Nice guy, back row or outski unfortunately. At least he has his looks, degree and fitness business to fall back on.

The man of the match was someone who had a similar injury to Chris…its a pity he didn't make a fist of the halves when he had a chance to show his wears. IMO he's on tender hooks if his form doesn't get better.
